No horse is safe. Thouroughbreds, ponies, donkeys go to slaughter, young or old, some pregnant mares, and some young babies. Some are stolen pets. Also, the horse racing industry is to blame for breeding. Many are young contenders who did not race fast enough to be the Kentucky Derby Champion. Even a Kentucky Derby Champion, Ferninand, was slaughtered in Japan, when he was loaned out to stud.
There is no demand for horse meat, only among the super rich in Japan and Italy and the obese who eat anything. Most of the pro-slaughter propoganda is from greedy, heartless killbuyers. Not to mention horse meat is loaded with many carninogens including steroids that is hazardous to humans.
Horses and equine are not livestock, but are sensitive, intelligent animals that know what is happening when they encounter the horror of slaughter. Horse slaughter is an abomination on all levels, including spiritually where equine are mentioned several times in the Bible, and the chosen creature, the donkey, that Jesus Christ rode on to Jerusalem

This is not PETA, I am part of the good local citizens of El paso with a heart. Over 90% of USA citizens are AGAINST horse slaughter. Some reputable groups are Humane Society of America and Horses Against Horseslaughter who are extremely schooled on the subject, they have NO affiliation with PETA.
