Jonesboro crime statistics report an overall upward trend in crime based on data from 9 years with violent crime increasing and property crime increasing. Based on this trend, the crime rate in Jonesboro for 2012 is expected to be higher than in 2009.

The city violent crime rate for Jonesboro in 2009 was higher than the national violent crime rate average by 6.13% and the city property crime rate in Jonesboro was higher than the national property crime rate average by 57.58%.

How to we stop this and keep our city from being over runned with thugs? We as citizen have to help our JPD in fighting this crime. We have to report suspicion, we have to be a constant observer of our neighborhoods. We have to stop Not Getting Involved! And take a proactive fight in well being of our city. We live here, and we are being threatened by thugs coming in to prey on our good city. Our children are being exposed to more drugs than ever, we have to watch our kids, and take our city back from the thugs. Number one problem, right now, is Land owners collecting HUD money and renting to any out of town thug who wishes to set up a base camp of drugs. HUD is killing our good neighborhoods! Once HUD comes into your neighborhood, people start running, because the rip rap is sure to follow. This is where neighborhoods need to have solidarity. Ban together and call PD when you see suspicious activity. I could go on and on, but I hope this thread creates a conversation not to bitch, or gripe, but solve problems.

They're countless threads and post on that already. Its time for action, and taking back our city. Leaders of this town, need to form committees, neighborhoods need committees and set a plan of action in place.

Crime Rate Grows with Population

http://www.kait8.com/Global/story.asp...

JONESBORO, AR -- After the release of an FBI report on the most dangerous cities in Arkansas, law enforcement from the metropolitan statistical area of Craighead and Poinsett counties tell K8 News this area isn't that dangerous.

"The majority of people in the city of Jonesboro don't need to be overly concerned with the numbers," said Jonesboro Police Detective Mike Branscum.

Jonesboro is growing and with new neighbors comes new crime.

"As the area, Northeast Arkansas and Jonesboro grows, we're going to see those numbers grow gradually," said Branscum.

So what do we need to worry about?

"The biggest problems that we have in the city of Jonesboro are theft and breaking and entering. Those type of situations and a majority of that is stemming from drug usage," said Branscum.

In Poinsett County in Trumann, Police Chief Larry Blagg said drugs and alcohol play a big role in their county too.

According to the FBI, in 2006 there were 89 forcible rapes in the MSA.

But Detective Branscum said not all rapes initially reported actually turn out to be rape.

"A lot of times we have a victim who is scared or regretful of what has happened, maybe has been caught by someone and then they report a situation as a rape," said Branscum.

While many attacks can be random, many are tied to some sort of domestic violence.

"Out of all the assaults that occur in Jonesboro and all the batteries about 50% to 55% of those are domestic related," said Branscum.

And that assault or battery can often lead to murder.

"Last year in 2006 Arkansas had seventeen domestic homicides," said Kerri Bangert.

Kerri Bangert with the Women's Crisis Center of Northeast Arkansas says four of those were here in Region 8, and unfortunately they will continue to happen

Get rid of HUD except for the elderly and disabled, and crime will drop down to nearly nothing. Problem solved.

I have to say that I am thankful for your comment. Not only do you state the problem, but also you offer suggestions of things to do. I hope that the community will take you seriously. I do not feel comfortable coming to Jonesboro to do anything anymore.

Obviously many of you have never lived in Memphis. This place is a utopian society by comparison. Face the facts, the population of the Jonesboro MSA is what, over 150,000 now? Not for one second do I drive around in this town and not feel safe (aside from the awful drivers). That's pretty impressive given the amount of people. Yes, there are some problems, but as mentioned before the simple solution would be to reevaluate the amount of HUD housing...

I do not feel comfortable at all in Jonesboro anymore. Even in so-called "safe" neighborhoods. I live in Ridgepointe and it took nearly 40 minutes for the police to arrive when my alarm went off last year. I would not spend the night alone at the house again - ever.

So many of these forums blame the black citizens but, truthfully, meth is one of the biggest problems in the county and that has involved the white population as much (or more than) african-americans.

I do not know the answer to the problem, but as a healthcare provider, I do know it is more complicated than a black-white issue. Work in an emergency room for awhile and you will see that the drug problem is not a one-race issue. We are raising sad, dysfunctional kids who have dependency and depression issues and that usually translates into trouble down the road. As long as racially frightened, simple-minded people continue to focus on it as simply a race issue, the problem will never improve. A man walked into my neighbors house at 9am last summer and he was white...so this is a complicated problem that needs smart, unbiased solutions.

Thanks for the discussion. I do feel we have many good citizens still left in Jonesboro who care about their community and their neighbors. The problem I see is people are becoming less involved in community and tend to turn a blind eye until it personally involves them. This is one of the problems. We cannot continue to turn a blind eye. We have to bond together and help one another. It's got to the point, where it's no longer their problem its everyones problem. Turning a blind eye and hoping it get better has not worked and will continue to not work. We have to rise of to crime, and suspicious activity and report. JPD cannot fight the crime by themselves. If we wish to contiue our great community, we have to get involved and make a difference.

How can we get involved? I think one the biggest impacts, is forming a community watch. It sounds silly, but being connected to your neighbors, and keeping a eye out for thugs, is and can be a huge impact. When someone see's something suspicious, call your neighbor, can't reach them, call PD. At the least make a mental or written note of any person who seems out of place, time and date.

Another suggestion, JPD has reserves. They take volunteers. Seek information, and join them. The more back up PD we have the better off we will be in bad times.

Another suggestion, is almost everyone knows that one person, who seems to be on the shady side. You may know he is shady, or you may guess he or she is shady. First get the facts, and second report them to PD. All to often we turn a blind eye, only wishing later when your friend caused the death of someone else, and we regret not reporting. We cannot continue to let shady people continue on without reporting. If they are drinking and driving, report them. Let the PD know where they live and what time you see them driving drunk. This could save lives.

thanks to slumlords renting through HUD, you are correct. So many HUD, no income homes here, and so many naive people to take advantage of. The thugs from other towns are getting on the lists for their free HUD home, so they can move here. The good people are trying to move away. It won't be long before Jonesboro is just exactly like Blytheville. Blytheville used to be a great town not so long ago. President Clinton closed down the Air Force base there, and filled the base housing up with HUD people...and so it began.
An abundance of HUD ruins any city or town that allows it.
The Mayor here needs to get off of his duff and walk a few blocks to the HUD office, and take care of business and give this city a chance to turn back around.

The Valero station by Annie Camp needs CONSTANT patrolling. I had another damn thug try to sell me drugs while I was pumping gas. I cannot believe that is allowed to go on so close to a school, especially Jr High School where the kids are so impressionable. Makes me sick.

The citizens have stated that this will happen for many years. The more alcohol you have in a city the more crime you will have. Shut down all the club and respect the wishes of the people, and you will see crime rates start to fall.

As long as the state vetos our vote and sends in more private "non-Profit" clubs that are allowed to operate as public for-profite restaurants, we will have this problem.

Crime has little to do with private clubs and liquor. Respect the wishes of the people? The majority of the citizens of Craighead County didn't live here the last time the wet/dry issue went up for a vote.

As others have stated, the increase in crime more-than-likely has to do with all the HUD housing and rentals. Not to mention until recently ASU was going out of their way to draw in poor minorities to improve their diversity (now they are looking towards foreign students instead).

Still, for the size of the town, Jonesboro's crime rate isn't too bad and although at times the JPD seems incompetent they do seem hellbent on trying to keep the streets clean. Jonesboro is nowhere near becoming another Blytheville, Osceola, West Memphis, or Pine Bluff. Not yet, anyways.
