my husband and I both invested a lot in vburg.we were not from there , lived in 2 of the top 10 biggest cities in the us before going to vburg. we invested a lot. we brought businesses that could be found in large cities and we received comments such as "we aren;t ready for this"( our businesses were ones that could be found in any city of 80,000 or more). we finally decided that we weren't going to sacrifice our childrens education and quality of life for a town that had not grown in approx 20 years. people are moving out left and right. the teachers were raised in ms, educated in ms and teach in ms, there is no social cross referencing because there is not an influx of people from other regions .the standards are low, very low , there is apathy and social stagnation.

I regret that you had such a sad experience in and with Vicksburg. I was hopeful that things were changing for the better. I am deeply concerned about the outcome of the recent mayoral election. AFTER the election the mayor elect announced his plan to keep his full-time job in Port Gibson. I find that really really sad. I dispute your statement that people are moving out left and right because I know that people are also moving in. Although I grew up in Vicksburg and am the product of a segregated public school system, I feel that I received a good education. Had there not been discrimination in the allocation of resources, I might have received a first class education from the dedicated teachers at St. Mary's Catholic School and Rosa A. Temple High School. Graduates of Rosa A. Temple High School have excelled in a variety of career paths across this nation. Some of them became outstanding teachers in the Vicksburg school system. In December, 2008 I purchased a small house in Vicksburg and look forward to moving back after having lived in Chicago, Austin and Houston. What were the businesses you brought to Vicksburg???

I can't name the businesses because we are very well known in town and if I mention the businesses everyone would know .I am stating what I mentioned before on facts and figures . I know many, many people that have moved in the past 9 months alone, if you look at the census / growth rate of the city it has not grown in over a decade.A lot of my realtor friends tell me that homes over 250,000 are not selling at all and many of my friends have had their homes sitting on the market for even 4 years now. My son made straight a's , was in the gifted program and tested in the 99 percentile on state testing and placed in the Duke tIP program. when tested in the state we are now residing he was almost a year behind in our new states standards. look at the test scores which are available online. all i can say is that I am very happy for my kids sake to be out of there. If you have children and move back, realistically look at what there is for a teen to do there.I lived in Houston for many , many years and it looks great now.I am not even going to get into the subject of the crime increase. I know I sound very negative, but now that I have moved it is actually making me more aware of what I was accepting as satisfactory. my husband is being much more diplomatic and nice and polite to everyone about our move. One thing that I hoped was not true re MS was the subject of racism. I spent time in large cities as well as D.C. and overseas. I was raised color blind and was integrated socially in school and home with all races. My first month in vburg while playing tennis at the country club with one of the "upper crust" of vburg she was letting it rip with racial slurs . all I could do was stand there with my jaw dropped. Later that night I was telling my husband how disgusted I was and how she was speaking like that like it was something everyone did. She showed no shame about it. this is really all I need to say. I am just happy that I finally was able to leave and GOD bless everyone who is still there.

I asked about the names of your businesses because you indicated that you'd moved. I assumed that the businesses were defunct and that you would not have reservations about disclosing the names of the businesses. Having grown up in the South, specifically Vicksburg, my perceptions and expectations are different. Your comments confirm my certain knowledge of the continued disparity and racism that lives on in Vicksburg. However, I assure you that things are much better than they once were. Growing up, I remember my paternal grandfather telling my brothers, cousins and me about the lynchings of black men in Vicksburg. When my grandfather was about 20 years old, Lloyd Clay was lynched by being hung from a tree and burned alive on the corner of Clay and Farmer Streets. The Vicksburg Post archives should have the paper from October, 1918. I grew up passing the large stump that remained many many years after that tree was cut down. I know exactly from which store the kerosene was obtained free of charge. We never entered that store as long as it was opened as it was owned by the same family as from that long ago time. In the middle of a stormy night in 1964 my parents home shook and I was awakened by the loudest sound that I have EVER heard. I was still a child. It was the sound of a bomb exploding at the rear of a house that was on the corner of what is now Grove Sreet and Mission 66. A branch bank is now there. At the time; civil rights workers, who "dared" to attempt to register African-American citizens to vote, lived with a family at that house. Our home was near where Jackson Street and Howard Street would intersect above the west side of St. Al's football field. Fortunately the people in the house were at the front and no one was killed. Of course the bombing remains one of Vicksburg's unsolved mysteries. As I do not have children, I have not tuned into the inadequacies of the Vicksburg-Warren School District. I am aware that, on a national level, Mississippi's educational scores have historically been low. I am aware of and concerned about the level of crime in Vicksburg, particularly violent crime in the African-American community. I truly appreciate your having attempted to make a difference in Vicksburg and hope that you will share your concerns with people in Vicksburg with whom you remain in contact. I am glad that you have found a better environment for yourself and your family. I am compelled to go back as it is home and my elderly mother lives there alone. I will spend most of July in Vicksburg.

What years were you at Temple High? Mrs. Marion Howard was the biology teacher during my enrollment. Perhaps you replaced her after I graduated. |

My youngest brother graduated from Vicksburg High in 1980. He now lives in Leesburg/Albany, GA. My response about years at Temple High was to Gerald Gipson. Temple only existed for about 11-12 years.
