The age of the child should be taken into consideration. My sons are all typical boys and are facinated by stuff like that. They should look at all things before making a decision. Perhaps he thought it was neat... The fact that he brought it to the teacher should show or at least it seems, no ill intentions where there.

I do not agree. My child goes to this school and we need to make sure our children understand the current state of affairs. You teach your children to react to situations not knowing if they are real or not. You need to train your children to know what to bring to school and what not to.

Why do people bring stuff like this to school? That kid should have been bringing books not bombs

Is anyone going to mention the fact that this happened during a dress rehearsal for a patriotic school program called "This is America" that was to be performed for the families of the children later that evening.....in which the children were told that they could wear costumes representative of our American heroes i.e. doctors, policemen, firemen, and armed servicemen. This little boy happened to be dressed as a military person. All of this I know, because my son is in his class....
Though I agree that parents should make sure that their kids are aware of the climate of our society, we should not act like these children are domestic terrorists to be when they come to school dressed as an American soldier, with a useless grenade, or that a boy scout who brings his spork to school is an ominous threat.

I agree with Cassie. The media make too-big-of-a-deal out of such small things. Kids can not be kids any more.

As a prior service combat engineer, I have some inert munitions (chunks of metal that used to be bombs and mortar rounds, with all the explosives removed, etc.) that only pose a danger should you drop them on your foot. They are pretty cool, but I wouldn't knowingly let my son take any of it to school. However, that does not remove the possibility that he could sneak in and "borrow" an item, even though I would hope that he would know better.(I have told him not to take them out of the house, but then how many things did my parents tell me not to do?) The location doesn't make it any more dangerous. But then mine are marked inert, so one look by the EOD folks and they would know. This grenade in the picture, if this is the one from the class, does not bear those markings, although it probably has an open hole in the bottom, so moving everyone out until it was properly identified was probably not an overreaction. Given the upcoming program as described by Cassie, it does not seen too likely that this was anything other than an act of ignorance on the kid's part.
That being said, I do think it is still a good idea to err on the side of safety if a kid brings something like this to school, as there very well could be some live "leftovers" from Grandpa's trip to europe back in the 40's starting to surface as these veterans are passing away, and his box of momentoes are brought to his children's (and grandchildrens)house. But at the same time, I think we need to respond appropriately with regard to the kid when this happens as well. We need to look at the kid and the situation. If this was a troubled kid threatening people, kick him out of school for the year. If he was a good kid trying to make his costume better, and was checking with the teacher if the prop was OK, then we can cut the kid some slack. Explain why we don't bring that stuff to school and move on. When we expell a model student for bringing a campling fork to school, we show that we are unable to think and reason, the very things that we are (I hope) trying to teach the kids to do.

I dont think the kid did anything wrong. You can buy these grenades at any Army surplus store. This type of grenade has not been used since probibally wwII.Everyone who has been in the military knows a handgrenade is Round like a baseball.
Schools are way too cautious and it ruins the fun out of school.I have carried a pocket knife since i was 4 years old,I always took it to school as did many of my friends.
I am sick of this school fear crap>If somebody is gonna go off and kill people all the rules the schools have wont stop them.School doors are made of glass, easily broken and entered.
I recently worked at Oklahoma University and told my manager the next time she ythought about treating adults like a kid she should reconsider her actions,I was booted off OU for making a threat.I never threatened her or anyone.
Schools are going overboard on the so called protection.
STUPID as hell if you ask me.

You are dumb! Goes without saying if you worked for OU... Anyways, Hand grenades are not round like baseballs. I am in the military and know this for a fact. Dont go acting like you are a know it all military member when you have never even set foot on a battlefield. Additionally you say that anybody in the military knows what a hand grenade looks like... those who are responsible for the school are not military you imbecile.

Has anyone taken into account how this young boy must feel after having this situation blown way out of proportion? This was broadcast by every news channel, must have been a slow news day. Suspension for 10 days for trying to help a classmate out with his costume seems a little harsh. Not to mention that a hand grenade is not a firearm so how does that work with school policy and punishment?

As one of the bestfriends to this family, i would like to say that this little boy is devestated about this situation. Thank you lisa and cassie. He was bringing this for a school play and yes, there was a hole in the bottom of the device. He meant no ill intent. He is a great student and is very upset over affecting so many people. These parents are very involved in the lives of their children and he didnt ask them because he did not think he was doing anything wrong.

I have known this family for over 20 years therefore knowing this boy since birth, he never meant anyone harm or to scare anyone he is a good child with good parents! His parents are active in the community, church, and sports with their kids, but can you be with them 24/7? No. He knows what he did was wrong, and he's learned a big lesson. Going to school on Monday is whats going to be his punishment. That alone is enough.

The child should be taught not to bring things like this to school if he has not already. Second this childs parents should be punished not him. if they are dumb enought to have this in there house and not know that would peek the interest of a little boy enough to take to school then they have issues. Parents are at fault here. Parents should to a parenting class or something. Even if they are busy they should never be to busy that they cant take time about from the world to pay a little more attention to there child.

DKL, u responded to carrie's post correct? Did you even read it? It said nothing about the parents being too busy, in fact it said "the parents are very involved in their community, church and sports WITH THEIR KIDS!" You should understand what you are reading before posting. Oh and if there was a required parenting class, then we would all take it, there's no exact textbook on how to parent. By your ignorant statements i'm going to assume you are not a parent.

Daily Horoscope for December 27

Taurus

Make a big effort to spend time with people you didn't see on Christmas Day, especially if they're older than you or are having a bad time at the moment. You're brimming over with compassion and empathy, which will be really appreciated by anyone who's on the receiving end of them. You're also in the mood to make allowances for people, and that will help enormously.
