Wayne is a VICIOUS criminal, he has no one to blame but himself. The attitude that you can blame someone else for "making" you do something like this, is SO WRONG! You don't have to do anything you don't want to, and Wayne obviously wanted to kill someone that night. Unfortunately, Doug was too good a man to realize that!

Ah but we do place blame -- on Wayne Prinkey. Whether Wayne was mad over a spilled beer, a parking place maneuver, or a drunk woman at the bar, he reacted by obliterating the life of Doug Stoneback, a cheerful, fun to be with, loving, guitar-playing, cool New Jersey kind of guy who was ready to be friends and friendly with anybody that came along his way.

He is my first cousin, and while I haven’t seen him in years, just a couple of months ago I played at an arts festival with his brother Steve, another very talented musician. The last time I saw Doug we played “Over the Hills and Far Away” together. He was unlucky in love and did not get to be with his family fulltime after the divorce and we all felt for him because there was no question about how much he loved his children. He was a loving guy, period, and we knew it killed him not to have his kids all the time. Thank God, his mother Joyce and father Dave are strong loving grandparents to Doug’s children and there was some semblance of a nuclear family, despite Doug’s split with their mother.

Doug was no druggie, he didn’t even drink. He was at the bar, no doubt, as a musician observing the other musicians in the band there. I wasn’t there, so I don’t know what happened, but it really doesn’t matter. The facts are that Wayne Prinkey traveled like a thief in the night to a murderer’s lair and laid in wait on Dawn Gregor, after breaking in, cutting phone lines and terrorizing a woman in the house. When Dawn arrived, he apparently attacked her. Maybe most men would have driven away then, but Doug did the thing that real men cannot avoid: he asked “hey what’s going on in there?”

Maybe Wayne stabbed the wrong person—maybe if there had to be a tragedy he should have taken his immature psychotic schizophrenic downright mean-spirited bastard frustration out on Dawn, but he chose an innocent bystander and wiped out a life that meant so much to so many people. His Mom and Dad had to avoid coddling him as he grew up, they loved him so much. They ache today in a way nobody can describe in the human language of mere words.

Yes there should be blame: even if Wayne Prinkey has a history of helping little old ladies across the street and baking cookies for his mother on mother’s day, on the night of June 10 he was a monster with a vicious heart and mind with obscene murder in his bag of tricks. He didn’t get drunk and hit a pedestrian in an accident, or some other event that we might be able to say: too bad for him, he was a pretty good guy… No, he went out of his way to slash car tops and run Doug Stoneback down and stick a metal object deep into the heart of a genuinely first-rate human being, who lived among others in a first-rate kind of world. If Dawn Gregor was such a Delila to Wayne, why didn’t he just pluck his own eyes out, or plunge the steel into his own black heart?

It is sickening that one can have an opinion that Wayne Prinkey should be cut some slack because Dawn Gregor is some kind of a maneater or whatever; you only get eaten if you’re agreeable to it. Wayne Prinkey’s hatred for Dawn’s actions, which it is clear might very well have been intended to push Prinkey’s buttons – should have resulted in a wide range of reactions other than murdering a man he didn’t know, defenseless and confused in the middle of a night where pure evil manifested itself in one Wayne Prinkey. Whether he is always evil or not is not the point. Please don’t think your opinion that Dawn is responsible so Wayne is not fully responsible is less than obnoxious here. Dawn may be guilty of some things, too, and I hope the DA looks into that, but she is irrelevant in the assessment of Wayne Prinkey. He is an evil thief of life, and a life that was truly amazing in so many ways.

The two little boys who grew up in Westfield NJ to become renaissance men are down to one, and I will never not be sad about that.

Doug and I were best friends for many years,he was a good caring person and it makes me sick what happened to him..i will always miss him ,I can't believe what happened and its all I think about right now.
Doug loved his parents and they loved him so much its horrible

Yes, I am sorry. You want to sit there and play hate on everyone. Do you realize that all of us here are playing on hate in some way or another whether it be on a paticular someone or just the situation at hand. I have cried everyday since this tragedy thinking of you and all of Doug's family and friends. Especially his children. I hate that all of you hurt and have to go through this. I do. I wake up everyday wishing I can turn back time. Every child I look at including my own brings my thoughts straight to Doug's children who no longer have thier father. And that hurts so badly. I would never wish that upon anyone. It is a God awful thing. I can't even express in words how sorry and torn up I am about all this. But really what can I do now. Nothing. I have to live with this everyday and know that someone so close to my heart had somehting to do with this. As a mother, sister, daughter and a wife I have a heart of gold because I was raised that way. I, like all of you, have pain and hurt too. A life has been taken from me too. But I consider the loss of one wonderful Mr. Stoneback hard to take just as any other. I don't know what really happened that night. But I do know it's the biggest, most God awful tragedy that my life will endure. And everyday I pray to God to make the hate and the rage go away. It all hurts to bad. I can only say in words that I am so deeply sorry to Mr. Stoneback's whole family and all of his wonderful friends. Do you remember telling me about the hurt that can be caused by simple comments and statements made acting on a feeling and hate? Well chris it couldn't be more true. Do you remember asking me about respect? Do you only ask for respect and refuse to practice what you preach. I am human too, chris. So are my children. Wayne's family and friends are no different than you, chris. All of us like you have the right express the way we feel. It doesn't mean you have to agree. We are not asking you to. We are not asking for forgivness or sympathy. Our comments about Wayne are what we know, not what you know. We don't know the man that was there that night. There is nothing wrong with the love and the care we have. We also hurt. Hurt for Doug, and all of you who lost him. Hurt for so many reasons that are obviously never going to be understood by you. Ok Shonda, not sure what the hell you are talking about. Of course Nancy is going to be angry and hateful right now, someone that she loved, that alot of us loved, was murdured by some dirtbag that people have been defending earlier in this thread. Show some respect. Also Shonda,if you are trying to say that Nancy is unintelligent and/or uneducated, than you could not be more wrong, she is about as sharp as they come. I would bet good money that you are not even in her league.

I have been thinking alot about Doug. I was washing my truck earlier and remembering how much Doug loved his old firebird, hell, he even loved the old cutlass that we used to beat the hell out of, cruising into the city or up to the mountains to drink some beers w/ friends. Doug almost always had friends around. Either me, or chuckie or stevie-dum or bobby or nancy or all of us, goofing off and having fun.
For the most part, reading these entries and sharing these memories has been a very positive experience for me, and they have helped me to remember Doug and how much fun he was to hang with. To those that have contributed with love and respect, I thank you very much.
