Theyre letting their employees do their work for them. Thats how they do it. My manager takes one day off a week, and one weekend that is allowed a month. I've had this manager for almost 3 months. The manager before her took 3 days a week sometimes, and every other weekend off. We weren't allowed to have a day off until she did. For everyone that has managers like that, just hang in there, itll get better, otherwise call your DM, or call ERC.

here goes......i started at dollar general last year in october and became pregnant. went out on leave in june on short term disability leave. stayed out and was supposed to return on 11/09. been given the run around by my dm, corp. recuiter, and corp about where to return to work. called my dm and told him i was to return in 4 weeks and he abruptly said you're terminated and plus i don't have anything open for a store manager. call corp to get everything cleared up and they told him i was just on leave. left my dm 2 messages after that and he never returned my phone call. offered to move at my own expense but was not granted. instead the corp recruiter wanted to transfer me to a little town an hour and a half away from my home. in other words i would have to drive back and forth. now they wont let me transfer at all, anywhere as a store manager because i've been reprimanded before i went on leave. But i've only been reprimanded only once. they are stripping me of my job title, eventhough they have other management positions open, upon my returning to work. Why? doesn't that seem a little discriminatory? if they wanted to demote me to an assistant don't you they should have done it when i was actually working and not upon my returning to work? They are cutting my pay in half. This is not fair. They are probably doing me a favor but I did ask for this favor. Eventually this will result in constructive discharge. By the way i have a hr background with a dual masters in hr. i swear this sounds discriminatory if not unethical.

Bless me with your input.

The problem with the dollar general stores is that they expect you to have no life, make out schedules the last day of the week so you cannot plan ahead for your families. And everything has to revolve around them, change the schedule when they want during the week and only keyholders get to alternate weekends off while part time employees have to work them. Supposedly your part time I guess if you consider 7 days straight part time. Maybe the pay, but not the hours. Your hired in based on availability and then when your told you will get some sundays off and work evening on sundays so you can attend church and then you have never had a sunday off in over a year, that's starting off great. I've never worked with so many pathetic, rude, people in my life, no wonder the customers are so disrespectful to us. I would love to find some other job and am looking for different employment while working here. Have even considered going back to school to land a (real) job.

My DG has a SM, 2 LSA, a 4th key, and 1 cashier. Of course 1 lead and the 4th key are not trained in key positions fully yet. The SM has offered the AM job to myself and the former LSA, who gave up her keys after having to close 5 nights in a row then having to open the store. This after 4 or 5 weeks of her closing 4 nights a week. 2 nights a week there were 2 key carriers closing the store, so not totally necessary for both to be there, we had 2 cashiers at that time. Of course now her hours have been cut from 30-40 hours to maybe 25 and she closes 5 nights a week. He is currently training the new LSA on opening but will not start training on closing til next week, the week of Thanksgiving. So I close 4 nights a week and only open on truck day, cause the SM has a standing event on that day and I am the only other employee trained on truck and vendors. Now that I have completed the Store Manager training on the computer as requested for AM position, I have been reprimanded twice for things that are very ridiculous. Once for sweeping the store during closing, as I was trained, instead of the cashier. Also for running the register during a busy time and so cashier could take a short break. All of this after working 11 days straight and being told he would do something nice to reward me. I also had to take an hour and 15 minute lunch to keep from going over 40 hours, while a male employee was given an extra hour because he had to go to shrink training, which gave him 41 hours for the week. He didn't need this hour but was given it anyway. Today I was called in on my day off to clock in so I could be discplined for something I did during closing last night, something I have always done in the 9 months I have been closing the store. Meanwhile our SM does not even do recovery at night when he does close, he just sits in his office doing "paperwork" that never seems to be done. The SM complains how dirty and unrecovered the store is , we have consistently been model store since opening. We have only gotten behind since he stopped the other LSA and myself from going through the fulfillment box.

Well lets just say that most of this complaining is so true. When i became manager i had a terrific DM. She tried to help me as much as she could. I worked in my store for about a month and then had to go to "store manager training." When i came back I had a new DM and she said she would help but didnt really. When I came back from training I had to get ready for inventory and had no idea how to get ready. My new DM told me to reaqd the inventory packet. She sent in a crew to help with the overstock and to face the cartons with the warehouse label on the front so the inventory crew could count easier. The store I was put in was a high shrink store and had to be on a conference call for high shrink. as a new manager I had so much to deal with and very little help. Not to mention everyone in my store with a exception of one or two was sliding merchandise. i found that out after the fact. The dm and lp auditor came in whenever they wanted and took over my office and told me very little about what was going on. On inventory day my dm did a store visit and an lp audit and failed me on both then wrote me up. She told me that i wass not responsible for the inventory numbers since i hadnt been there long but now that it was over it was my baby now. I am so glad to be away from that place. I worked 80-90 hrs a week because i never had enough help. and the only day off i had i would be called because the other assistants couldnt run the store long enough for me to have a day off.

I think that this company is doing good. All this info from the news is not very specific enough to say wether all managers are being a pain in the but. Each person is different, each state is different.I think everyone should just stop complaining and just be thankfull they are working.I agree on a certain level that acting over the top is not right.Just getting work done is important for the company.Hard work pays .

I have ran stores in both the north and the south. When I worked in Louisianna I ran a medium volume store with a moderate shrink. I was expected to run the store with only 89 hours for my employees (that equals to me working 80 + hrs a week). Most of the time I was in the store by myself and running the cash register.

Here in the north I get more hours but only because I am in a store with a ridiculous shrink! This store has been open 3 years and has never made a profit. We are required to send in our schedules every week and if they are not to the matrix then we can not get them approved. I have asked to be moved to a store closer to home since I drive over an hour to get to the one I am currently in. 2 have opened up in the last month and I have been told that they will not move me from my store until after inventory.(6 months away)

It is no longer financially beneficial for me to work for them. I am paying more for fuel and maintenance on my vehicle than I make! I am the lowest paid manager in the district and I travel the farthest. I have loved working for the company but I just can't do it anymore. I do feel like we are being treated like glorified cashiers and stockers. We do not control what is coming in to our stores, I do not control the expenses of payroll, and I have lost many good employees due to their refusal to give raises.

As I look from page to page of the many comments made by employees and management encounters with the way things are being handled,I think that some states have hired somewhat of the *** maybe or just the most unkindest people to work with.I don't know. The company is supposed to pay the employee no matter what the shift is based on .What if the other person is late ? Don't subtract the amount of pay from his or her hours. That is not right at all.The way the economy is now ,employers have to be considerate and happy about helping and being able to help regardless of situations. The person is able to work and the place of business is able to depend upon the employee for his and her performance on the job.Employees should not be doewn graded at all.The company probably hired some very unhappy people in the past then.

As a former DG warehouse employee I can tell you most all of the negative stories you read about DG are correct. I worked for DG for 8 years. Perfect attendance most of those years. Productive employee, that was me. Then one day DG decided to cut back. If you counted all of the 9 warehouses there were nearly 1000 people that lost their jobs. It was done in a very cold, uncaring way. They can sugarcoat it ever how they want in any article written. There was no help or direction and most all of us were not absorbed into other positions throughout the company as the news release was written.
I know first hand the aggrevation the store managers and associates go thru. This company doesn't care that the most valuable asset they have is their employees. They know they can shaft all of the employees because there are so many people looking for a job.
Cal Turner had a great company in Dollar General. When he left and the KKR vultures took over everything changed. Today's Dollar General management from the top corporate to the distribution management teams are all people with "flexible integrity". They can look you in the eye and lie like dogs. The more corrupt and imoral the person the higher you climb the ladder with DG today. That did not happen in Cal's day.

Nope in Cal's day you had family time we had winter hours and summer hours we didnt open at 8 am and close at 9 pm on a sunday! and there was more payroll not the manager working till 10 or 11am alone because no payroll dollars, BUT you see they are making profit and REALLY dont care about thier employee's because as former employee stated they know they have the upper hand with lots of people looking for work. Sad but true

If the past few days have been a blur of cooking, washing up and wrapping paper, take a break today and catch up with loved ones. Have a long talk with one of them so you can find out what they've been doing lately, or discuss a topic that concerns both of you.
