Easton Area School District, teachers, have little to show for ...

Full story: The Morning Call

When Easton Area school officials in April proposed laying off dozens of teachers to salvage the district's financial future, a public and at times personal debate began about what role the teachers should play in helping the district weather the recession.

Why do school boads believe they can beat up on teachers and then turn around and ask them to play nice? Keep up the good work Mr. Deely.

The American public school system is a catastrophe that is getting worse by the day. It is time we dismantled this mess before it is too late.

Why wasn't there more input from the community when they wasted money on the artificial turf, and weight room and a big school, and now,"well we have to cut teachers", something is wrong with this picture!

To all those who enjoyed the marching bands on Memorial Day, the jazz band playing in the <Easton> Square, and all other instrumental and choral performances - HELP US KEEP THE MUSIC PLAYING IN OUR SCHOOLS! Any cuts at the elementary level will significantly impact the future of high school music programs. Don't let the school board sneak through any cuts!

You are correct. Let's begin in PA with PDE and the IU's!

If the district really was in the financial trouble they claim they are in, they wouldn't have hired TWO consultants, spend over 1 million to open a new school, or put out bids for MORE capital improvements. When district officials STOP spending $, then maybe the community will listen.

Because they'll do it anyway - just look at the two consultants they "tabled". It was all for show. They want to spend, spend, spend on anything, BUT education.

We keep throwing good money at these school districts and nothing ever gets better. The whole school (boards, teachers, etc) need to take a 10% cut in pay. People are losing their jobs and their homes, but we still have to throw money at the schools. I would think differently if we saw better grades, but the grades stink! The state ought to take the school over and make cuts, deep cuts especially to the bloated administration. Also, here we have the Wilson school district less than a mile from Easton, so there is 2 bloated administrations. The need for money has got to stop, taxpayers ought to band together and do something to make this stop.

We can do something about it! Attend the next school board meeting by the hundreds! They will run and hide!

When does attending a meeting every help? What about the people who attended the meeting about the artificial turf, it was passed and now see what we have, lead based dirt! And the pool, that was the only smart thing they did. I am tired of it and feel for those on fixed incomes, how will they deal with this new tax increase, having to deal with the county and local tax increases also. People should not have to get second jobs to pay their taxes while these school employees get their raises and benefits and pensions. It is a pitty what they are doing to the taxpayers in this district!

Yes it is a pitty. Providing them with an educated workforce and a return on investment that cannot be achieved through any other government spending. Yes there are problems with public schools but they have much more to do with the student population than with teachers or administrators. Look around, in affluent districts, in which most kids come from middle and upper class families test scores are fine. In urban schools, where a large percentage of the students (just about the same percentage that don't pass the tests by coincidence) come from broken homes and have serious issues that follow them through ths schoolhouse doors, it is harder to reach those artificial threshholds mandated by the state and federal government. If you want to ruin our society, disband the pubic schools and it will happen within a generation. I agree we should look at diversifying the revenue stream and taking the burden away from those who can least afford it, but the answer is not to blame teachers and public school administrators, they are doing the best they can with what they have. It is time that people really paid attention to what it is like to educate this generation of children.

jmcgary are you aware school boards do not receive any pay? So before anyone spouts off about the board, remember these are people who spend countless hours at meetings and are also tax payers. The teachers and administration make more than enough money and they should take a pay cut.

We did. We voted it down. And then, behind closed doors, it was approved and the money spent. They are all crooks- the board, the teachers, the unions, every last one of them.

I typed my name so you can look me up in the phone book. I am with you. I attended the May 7 meeting and it was the most informative waste of time. I agree the cuts need to be with the administration / teachers and not the students.

Uh...my kids know about about a certain teacher's divorce than what he teaches. I know of another teacher who forgets everthing and I can't tell you how many movies they show for no reason. There are teachers out there who do not deserve half thier salary and there are those who deserve more. How about letting the kids speak out and let them grade the teachers the way the teachers grade the kids. These high school kids are our future or should we let this mess go along with Social Security, etc.

The issue with that is if little Suzy doesn' like the teacher, the teacher would get less money for no reason. The teacher could be the best in the school, but if her class gets to decide her salary, that could mean big trouble for her and her family.

Would you like your salary to depend upon what 25 kids thought of you? Even better, how about your boss's kids decide how much you should get paid a year. Would that be fair?

Do I agree that some teacher's are bad teachers and that some are great? I'll agree 100% with that statement, however I don't think letting first graders decide how much their teachers get paid is the answer.

Only one small step needs to be taken to rebuild the relationship between the administration and the teachers: the abolishment of AFG. Countless dollars and minutes are wasted on this process. As a parent of an EASD student, it is obvious morale has never been lower across the district and it is affecting our children. The original meaning behind accreditation has been lost and it's time for Easton to move on.

When it comes to paying taxes, I actually don't mind paying the school tax bill - because I KNOW where its going. I know that my children, my nephews, nieces, and even my grandchildren will get an education. Its time people STOP blaming teachers for their tax bills. They pay taxes too. They sit in those board meetings and watch the same crap you watch go down. They are your neighbors. They are trying to do something to make this country better and given the circumstances of our country's financial crisis AND how people in the community treat them AND the families some children come from everyday, I often wonder why they even stay in the profession. Its the only profession where OTHER people treat them with such disrepect. In my opinion, we don't pay them enough for what they deal with everyday.

So instead of complaining about your tax bill and how much a teacher should be making, stand up and do SOMETHING. Go to the board meetings and SPEAK UP. Talk to your law makers. Do something, because complaining does nothing. Absolutely nothing.

Cutting teachers WILL cut programs and WILL effect the students ... I'm sure you knew that.
