Bridgeport fire victim remembered as a dedicated mother and friend

BRIDGEPORT -- Tiana Black's kids were happy.

And that, as much as anything, gave insight into the kind of person the 22-year-old mother was, before she died in a smoky fire early Friday along with her three children in the P.T. Barnum Apartments complex.

"The last time I saw her was Halloween," said Melissa Henton, looking down the road that leads out of the complex where the tragedy struck. "She was right there with her kids. Ready to walk out to Black Rock to trick or treat."

Henton stood down the street from Black's second-story apartment, where the single mother died with her twin girls, Nyasija and Tyasija Williams, both 4, and son Nyshon Williams, 5. The fire struck before 1 a.m., but later Friday close friends were still inconsolable, some of them having seen firefighters try to revive Nyshon.

Black was studying nursing at Housatonic Community College, and had attended Bassick High School before going south for a while to live with her mother in North Carolina. She worked at the Goodwill Industries outlet not far from her apartment....more
