Just wanted to put it out there, that we were a asphalt roofing company that completely dropped both the IKO and BP brands because of all the issues above. We couldn't handle the nightmare service calls anymore. These were our clients after all?

We are now the #1 quality installer of Metal Roofing in Southwestern Ontario. Metal is ruffly 2.2x the price of asphalt but it LASTS FOREVER, with a true no non-sense lifetime warranty. If you calculate asphalt over 36 years you save around $50,000 in replacement costs choosing metal the first time you need a new roof.

In 2004 my contrator installed IKO 35 yr. Harvard Slate Architectural Shingles and there have been continuous leakage damages occuring since. In the beginning my contractor covered the repairs but now the repair costs are falling on me and have reached the $3000 mark. Periodically I have found pieces of roofing shingles on my lawn and driveway but thought they were from homes that had older roofing shingles but now I am saving the pieces as I have realized they match mine. Currently I am preparing to file a suit against IKO but have heard they don't back up their product. My frustration level is at its max.
Just filed a claim with IKO, gave them all the information needed, responded with a promise to pay the amount of money we paid for the shingles, but that price was in 2003, not 2012 money. It will cost us 3 times what we paid for shingles originally "Chataeu"
There was granulation and curling, 9 years on a 35 yr product.
I did have the original receipt.
Do I take the money and run or wait for class action.

Shingles curled up after 9 years, roofer said Iko knew. They were bad shingles, but would not stand behind them. Are there any on going lawsuits going on in Western Canada?

YES! retain all paper work, take pictures each year, ensure adequate ventilation.
In my opinion they are crap shingles.
Its not always the shingle, 8 times out of 10 its the installers who don't know how to use the material properly, as well as, poorly informed home owners. Look up the manufacturer specifications on the shingle and application requirements. If you use the material PROPERLY and ensure your roof top ventilation is up to snuff, a full underlay was used, your soffit has proper mor-vent channels allowing fresh air to actually be able to go through your soffit, and proper insulation, then you will have no issues. Also installers that are not careful will scuff your shingles which actually takes the protective granulated layer off in areas exposing vulnerable materials within the shingle which leads to rapid deterioration.

I had my house built in 2000 and I noticed them deteriating in 2004 , crumbling cracking lifting . I called my contractor and was told basically that the shingles were faulty and I was out of luck . I'm not on point with what has taken place with the law suit against iko but if they are not being held responsible then more complaints need filed .

Just had a roofer her to remove two shingles to send to IKO. The shingles are organic 15 years old and have holes in them from where the granules came off and the organic material failed. There is a class action suit in IL and at least one other in Canada. My roofer will not use IKO shinges. My wife sells real estate and a house she was selling alos had a failed IKO roof that was 12 years old. The fix requires a complete strip and reshingle. I am filing a claim with IKO but don't expect much in return for my efforts.

IKO shingles 12 years old cracking, curling and leaking. They made me take two shingles off of my roof and send them prepaid to Ontario form BC, in spite of the fact there Rep had looked at these shingles. I had to pay for a bundle of shingles and labour cost to replace the two shingles they requested. They obviously new there wer big problems with these shingles but were trying to make it as tough as possible for any one to comply with there warranty. They have made me an offer of about 25% of the replacement cost.

I have had IKO shingles on my New house for the last four years years. each year i have had to replace shingles that have blown off and are coming apart in the cold weather. Spend the extra money and get a better shinge. Very Very bad product. stay away from the IKO shingles.

Glad it has become a forum for IKO problems.
Most builders and yards in the area here will not carry IKO anymore, and won't sell them unless directed by the homeowner.
my Certainteed 30 year AG Colonial slates are holding up just great after 10 years, not one corner curled, not one dry shingle, not one broken one.
Shingles only last 25 years in optimal conditions.
Dont ever go with a 3 tab shingle.

This is because you have blow throughs on your shingles.

I love when people claim metal lasts forever.
What they don't tell you in the hundreds or thousands of screws they put in have rubber washers on them that dry and crack causing leaks everywhere, then they must all be replaced.

The press / government needs to do something about this.
New roof professionally installed less than 9 years ago.
Followed all the instructions for a valid warranty claim. Their lab says "there is nothing wrong" ZERO $ offered in settlement.
5 Roofers inspected and commented - product is "crap" a known concern .
i have the same problem in Oakville Ontario after 12 years, except i installed "40" years guaranteed Chat shingles. I will try dealing with contractor but its not their fault. This is ridiculous.I had a 25 year old GAF shingle on my cottage after 22 years which is probably reasonable considering it cost much less and was only 3 years short. This IKO shingle is clearly a product defect or was a lie from beginning. Did IKO do anything for you. Is there a class action going on. Will IKO take any responsibility?

did IKO give you a refund for the warranty?
We are having the exact same problem with our IKO shingles - 40 year shingles. What a joke. They did not last 11 years with our curling, cracking and breaking. They did not warranty them becasue they said they were cracking around our chimney. I said jokingly that yes our course they would do that because no house in Canada would have a chimney and they should not work for that purpose. They even sent a representative to our house and gave us that pathetic answer. WHAT A JOKE OF A COMPANY. They should have been embarrassed to give such a stupid answer - anything so they don't have to warranty their ridiculous product.
We too are searching for new shingles.

But after reading these comments im not sure that I want to go with an iko shingle. Have they made improments or are they still as bad as everyone claims. I live in jersey and we get all types of weather. does anyone reccommend them or anything different or better?

I had IKO 30 installed in 1996. They are crap. They failed completely after 17 years. The company did nothing to stand behind their warranty.

We just purchased a house in Waterdown with these same shingles, and after receiving a quote from 3 different roofers with an average price of $12000, IKO has offered to pay $870. These are 25-year shingles and have lasted less than 10 years.
Anyone out there in the Toronto area launching a claim? If so, should we also begin a class action suit? This amount of warranty is quite unacceptible!!

Just curious--what happened with your small claims court case? did you win? I'm wondering if I should just stop waiting for them and start the small claims action-we are in schomberg just noth of toronto

we bought a new house in 2003 our IKO Caimbridge 30 year shingles are worn out to the backing in just on 10 years what is the point of telling people their product is a 20-or 30 year life rating when the fall way short by 2/3 the life span that is missleading or fraud and consumer protection branch needs to get involved and hold IKO and others accountable .

We used IKO Chateau "Weathered Wood" with 30 year warranty. In 10 years we noticed cracking, shingles falling of. This year, 2013 we will have to replace all the shingles on our house, barn and utility buildings! A previous thread asked about any pending class action since the IKO company does not seem to stand behind their product.

I have IKO Renaissance shingles that are cracking and turning up around year 9. There are now other 5,000 people in the IKO Class Action Lawsuit with the same problem. I hope the message gets out to other home owners with the same issue and that we are properly compensated. Take pictures, takes samples and get your roofing company to write a report. The more evidence the better.
