Go to this URL and check the classifieds weekly.

I hope someone in your family has a good job because the whole area is terribly depressed.

Depressed?? Geez, that area was depressed when I graduated from Tawas Area High in '76. Thats the reason I left for good in '79. Good to see that some things never change. But, that being said, I had a great time there.

So long as you don't need a job to make a living, things are pretty good. We recently got a Walmart, Tim Horton's opened up, and the local hardware store expanded to carry lumber. There's some kind of redevelopment going on in Tawas City "downtown"- we don't really have one now. And East Tawas seems to be holding on to most of their stores. Supposed to be building a new library too.

I'm retire, so I like the low cost of living here; but I understand if you're trying to raise a family, it can be kinda tough. The unemployment rate in the county is over 11%, just about the worst in the nation. But if you are financially independant, and like Lake Huron, this is a perfect place to be.

Go look at http://statewiderealestate.net/agency.php... and ask for Steve. He's a good contact for rentals and buying.

I am thinking of taking a job at the hospital in Tawas City but am concerned about finding a decent rental in the area. No one has reallyanswered that question. Are there any nice rentals there?

Considering the housing market, you're probably better off buying if you plan on staying here long term. There are a lot of houses for sale for less than $100k, and our prices have been relatively stable (most of the properties for sale are 2nd homes people down-state can no longer afford).

As for rentals, that really depends on your definition of "nice". There's not much for apartment complexes, most are in older houses- about $450 for 2 bdrm. The majority of rentals are houses (again they are vacation homes people can not sell or use) for $350-$600 month, but then you are usually responsible for yard work. Either way, even if the homes may look run down & the roads are in need of repair, the neighborhoods are safe. I walk alone at night all the time & have never worried about crime. Yes, we have our share of drug/alcohol & domestic violence, but that's about it.

To see current rentals, check out the local paper at Iosconews.com .

Just check the classified in the local paper www.iosconews.com . They list many apartments & houses for rent,$400-$600/mo. Avoid anything right on US-23 unless you like lots of traffic noise.

Contact MapleTree Apartments in East Tawas. It is a great place to live. It was recently renovated and has dishwashers, air conditioning, glass top stoves, new refrigerator, built in microwave, ceramic tile, new carpet, and private balcony or patio.
