Cox steps down as coach at New Athens

The baseball program went to the dogs years ago when Howes had it. Only his friends' kids got to play. Now he's doing virtually the same with the girls' basketball team at Freeburg.

My favorite Danny Cox moment was when he pushed a helpless cameraman balancing a 50-lb. camera on his shoulder over a chair at the airport. Who was the baseball coach at New Athens when they won the state tourney in the early 80's. And whatever happened to the Pours?

I have to comment on a few things regarding politics in a small town.
First Cox - At first I thought it was a great thing Mr. Cox was doing for a small town however, when I heard he didn't ride the bus to games with the boys I knew it wasn't going to last. I guess to say the least when I heard he quit, I wasn't shocked.
Second, let's discuss the "Howes" issue. Yes, he is all about his "clicks". When his son didn't start varisty basketball with another board members son..(cough cough) it's quiet funny how Coach Toenjes was then asked to leave a year later. Was it revenge? We will never know.

cox as coach was a complete joke, mr noffke should get the $30,000 he'll atleast ride the bus with the kids, plus he's the man anyways.

Matzy was the coacha nd he did it for free!! Then Kassing came in and was a paid coach.

This could possibly be the dumbest post I have ever read. I played for coach Howes at New Athens in the early 90s. Howes won over 300 games coaching at the little podunck High School of New Athens,, thats saying something. ALso I follow High school basketball pretty well still to this day and I know Howes' son was a starting guard on the basketball team for 3 years at freeburg and as moddrell did! Also one of my friends kids played at freeburg and said Toenjes was " Not a good coach and had no relations with his players" As far as Danny Cox goes the man is a complete ass hole and left the program for the birds. I think nofke was a great higher. Hes a great man and knows what he is talking about...by the way before you write something get your facts straight

New Athens baseball has not been the same since HOWES left that place, I know you think you are really smart about high school sports but you know, he might have played his friends kids, but they won!!!

No one on here said Howes is the girls basketball coach at Freeburg. Hes the freekin principal who's an idiot. I'm glad I'm outof that place.
