Students see part of gory film

Full story: Orlando Sentinel

There is no shortage of blood, sex and gore in the R-rated movie 300. Limbs are severed, heads decapitated and soldiers impaled, as Spartan and Persian warriors fight each other in a re-enactment of the ancient ...

I really hope that a mistate in judgement isn't going to effect the rest of this teacher career. Let's keep it in perspective here. Inappropiate yes but earth shattering I hardly think so. We are talking high school students here not elementary. They are young adults. It isn't as if the teacher was showing porn. As far as was it prirated of course it was since it hasn't been released for veiwing. Anna Cowin has now appointed her self the morality police. The teacher didn't pirate it obviously it was done at the students home. Anna it isn't any of your business, In spite of your GOD complex. Reprimand the teacher and let her learn a lesson from it and go on.

Why is the school board even involved in this . This should be handled internally by the school and disciplenary action should be taken by the school. The school should then take legal action against the student that provided the bootleg tape. Parents should go look at their kids " MY SPACE " blogs and see what these kids are really into ,before they try to ruin peoples lifes over clips from a movie their kids have already seen and the school board should go have another meeting with a paid mediator so that they can hold hands and sing kumbaya together again and leave good teachers that are making a differencs alone.

Many people feel that Cowin is just trying to punish Mrs. Cole for not kissing her butt every day. Very few teachers in Lake County like Cowin or the decisions she's made. This woman tells teachers every day "to do the right thing in ANY situation". She reminds her teachers to make sure they only show movies on the approved county list...I don't believe she knowingly did anything wrong. I also believe that if she's replaced by a Cowin goon, many many people will leave East Ridge!

I agree on the myspace page it is shocking what some of these "children" are saying and doing. Anna Cowin is so far off into the right she is no longer in the real world. These are not children we are talking about they are young adults. As far as taking legal action against the kid who brought in the boot legged tape why who are we the morality police?

I hope that last comment was a joke. If this is an example of the intelligence of the students in the class watching a boot leg movie is the least of this schools problems.

While I agree that SOME kids/young adults today are more grown up than they used to be, please do not assume that every student in that classroom was comfortable with the movie being shown. If my child was in that class when the movie was shown, they would have very uncomfortable and I would be appalled and upset.

First, my child is underage to watch R-rated movies without parental permission, and no other adult has the right to give permission for MY child to watch such a movie. Nevermind the fact that this movie would not be watched in our home, period. It is my right as a parent to set down rules and limits for my children as I see fit. Perhaps they may seem "too conservative" for this generation, but they are based on Biblical principles, they worked for me and my siblings, and that is my choice. No one has the right to interfere with or overstep the rules of my household just because they think we may be conservative or "fuddy-duddy."

Second, why is everyone ignoring the fact that this was an R-rated movie to start with and they are not permitted to be shown in school? It doesn't matter if certain parts were "fast forwarded." I agree with enjoying your last few days of school before summer break, but there are so many other better movie choices than this one.

Tolerance of behavior like this, from both the student and the teacher, are what is contributing to the downfall of our society. People make excuses while ignoring the fact that it was wrong.

Every parent who objected to their child seeing even parts of this movie had that choice stripped away from them, and yet many of you are telling them to just accept it...I don't think so!

No one is ignoring it or asking that it be ignored. But to throw away the teachers entire career for a lapse in judgement (and I will grant you it was a big lapse in judgement) is insane. Written reprimand and her apologizing to the parents and students will sufice. Come on it isn't like she had sex with a student or showed porn. I didn't see one excuse made for her in any of the comments. Just people like me who agree that stoning the teacher is a little over board. And as far as the bootleg CD that is a matter for the parent of the student who brought it to deal with. That is if they aren't the ones who made it.

Everyone makes mistakes. Let the teachers go back to work. No child was traumatizes by this. I am sure the kids watched with no problem, but then you have one child that dislikes the teacher because of a grade, or whatever and go and cries to mom and dad that their life is over because of this. I am not saying that it is right, just not earth shattering! I mean let’s get real about this. If half the parent knew what their children did when they weren’t looking, I think they would be appalled!!

My son is on the ERH baseball team, and yes the coaches are in the hot seat. I was upset, but you know what my son is a big boy! I am a realist and i am sure he has previewed worse things then that movie. I think the coaches were great with the boys and it will be really sad that they might not be coaches next year. I know that the issue on the bus was handled inside the school by Ms.Cole, but you have a angry parent that was upset the their son did not play as much as they wanted and saw the Mr. Campbell and decided to bring this up again because they thought the coached should have been fired. At this point it is a witch hunt!

I agree this is a witch hunt. I think it is another case of a group of people over reacting. We have all at some point or another used poor judgement. I would hate to be condemned or condemn anyone for the rest of their life for a mistake in judgement. I don't think it hurt the kids to realize that their teachers make mistakes to. I think it will be fine if the teachers admit to having made a mistake tell the kids they did and apologize. Then move on. It is done and over.

I agree with both of you and didn't think anyone should have been fired. but how do you punish someone one way and not do the same for others. The real wrong is not in the showing ( not that i agree with it) but to jump all over a teacher and fire him ( a good teacher - that we need) and turn around
and brush the same offense under the rug for
a baseball coach. That is what is what is wrong here !!!!

just to set the record straight my son was on that bus and he had plenty of playing time. I also believe that the head coach is
a great coach. I also agree we all make mistakes in judgment, but when I hand over my child to the school everyday I expect kit
gloves. I also expect the people that assume the responsibility when we agree to these trips that they take the responsibility and pass it on to other people.( a fall guy )

Concerned parent....One of the coaches was fired! I will assume that you are the parent the sent the letter to the news. If some of the parents would have talked to the principal you might have found out the whole story, not just send a teacher to the fire for the second time. Double Jeopardy is never fair! So now you have a good teacher with a large family without a job, because he made a bad decision. Really sad that there are parents that think that their children are made of glass. By the way did you son stand up on the bus and tell them that he did not want to see the movie or did he watch? I was told by my child that all the boys wanted to see the movie. Also did you know that their battle cry before a game came from the movie? So not the first time I assume they have seen it.

I did not sent any email. but that doesn't mean I don't have my opinion about it the same as you. Personally I would have only asked for an apology for wrong judgment from "all" the parties involved. Not to be fired. I never said i wanted or expected that.

This is one of those days when money slips through your fingers in no time at all unless you're very vigilant about your spending habits. Unfortunately, it will be difficult to stop yourself splashing out whenever the fancy takes you, whether or not you can afford it.
