Helicopters over East Yonkers, NY

I would like to know why there is a helicopter flying around the Cross County area of Yonkers every night starting around 11:30 pm. It's been going on for weeks. Is there something going on? It is upsetting me because I don't know why they are flying late in the night. Could you please let me know?

I was wondering the same thing. i just heard it tonight while out walking the dog it is over the bx river between eastchester and yonkers from 10:00 had no idea ithas been going on every night.

Flying too low, too slow and LOUD. They seem too low in case of an emergency also - not enough altitude for autorotation. They at least need to vary their flight plan a little. What inconsiderate lugs. They've been back and forth 4 times tonight (8/8) so far.
I say lets give a few calls to the FAA. I want to see exactly who and why this is happening.

Hi Mark,

It's funny but since I posted my blog on the helicopters, I haven't heard them at night. It's kind of weird. I also don't know why topix removed your post. That's weird too! Thank you for trying to help anyways.

The little bit of noise we made seems to have made it quieter this last week.
There probably are other reasons, but at least I can sleep.

I thought I was the only one that noticed the helicopter. I noticed it was making broad sweeps, mostly over Mt Vernon. One side of the sweep brought it over my area which is Cross county and the BRPway. I ruled out the occasional late night corporate flight since those fly in near straight lines over our area. The best guess is the chopper was law enforcement doing night training. I don't know if the county police have an active chopper program.

I should note I've seen the same chopper over other areas in S. Westchester at similar times and dates.

If it is law enforcement, then following the parkways makes sense, they need to be intimately familiar with the roads from every angle and at low altitudes.
Just an educated guess.

Thank you for your comment. Yes, it does make a little more sense out of what was going on for weeks. It also seems to have quieted down since I reported it. I wonder why. Were they trying to keep it a secret? Just wondering.

Last night, around 1:30 AM, we were woken up by the noise of a helicopter flying very low near the Mark Twain School area. It circled our area a few times. It had a spotlight aimed southward. We had heard a helicopter flying in our area during the past few weeks, but this one was flying lower (huge noise) and I even got a look at the lights and the bottom of the aircraft. What's going on?

Funny... last night I was outside on a friend's porch on Wakefield Ave until midnight, so I just missed the sighting around Mark Twain. If it had a spotlight on, it was very likely law enforcement looking for something.
I have access to the roof of my apt building. I'll try and get a better look next time. From past experience I know I can ID a helicopter at night with my binoculars. I'll see if I can come up with a positive ID.

just came home and noticed the helicopter noise again..i am in north eastchester.... local police should know usually they r looking for someone BUT it seems too often to be looking for someone crime can't be that bad suddenly..it is unnerving

For KethyT and tina354. I got home a short time ago so I may have missed an potential opportunity to ID the chopper. Oddly, it is easier for me to spot the Space shuttle and ISS, at least they fly in a predictable manner. Hint: Sunday evening at 8:27PM(Sept6) look towards the south. The shuttle and ISS can be seen moving steadily from right to left (facing south towards NYC). Look for a steady bright light that has no flashing lights, it will appear for only 2-3 minutes and will suddenly dim as it passes into the Earth shadow.

The heli is up there right now. I watched it from my roof (xcounty & BxRvrPway) while it circled around northwest Mt Vernon. A few wider circles brought it directly overhead. It was at it's usual low attitude of 800 ft or so. I had my binoculars on it but could not get a proper look at the side, where the important markings are.

I can say it looks very much like the same Bell 407 that the Westchester County police fly. I'm disappointed I couldn't see the reg numbers for a positive ID. I'm nearly 100% sure it's the county's chopper. I read & looked at all of the sites you just posted about the Bell 407 helicopter. I understand that the county has a duty to protect us but it just freaks me out when I am trying to sleep at night & I hear that helicopter flying low & loud. It is happening every night now. It is just another stressful reminder of the world we live in. I can't seem to get away from being reminded of that.
