I wish them well, but I'll keep going to the City. This season I saw Tony nominees and winners like David Hyde Pierce, Frank Langella, Vanessa Redgrave, Liev Schrieber, Angela Lansbury, Audra MacDonald and Christine Ebersole with discounted tickets that averaged $55. Of course I had to travel and park, but the top-flight talent was worth the inconvenience. Northport isn't that easy to get to if you live further east on the LIE anyway.

Northport is a quaint town that is one of the few towns on the North Shore that has not been overcome by commercialism. The restaurants are not upscale except for one or two and even those are questionable. Still the town is charming and the theater will add to that charm. "They are joking" must be joking himself because I've lived in Locust Valley where I went to school and Cold Spring Harbor (two towns west of Northport "with the rest of us") and have found Northport to be my favorite. Unfortunately, 10 years from now Northport will be just like CSH, with boring shops/food/people and no character. As for success? I find my 3 mil. home on the water to be just fine.

i didnt realize greenlawn went all the way to the water? isnt that called centerport? my house is over 3 mil and not on the water. where can i get one of those cheaper ones like yours?

I was fortunate to have attended a performance of "Smokey Joe's Cafe" at the John W. Engelman theatre in Northport, over the weekend and was surprised and most pleased by the beauty of the theatre and the professionalism of the production. Long Island desperately needs an outlet for the arts as it is impossible to trudge into Manhattan on a regular basis. Although, there is currently theatre on the Island, it is non-professional community theatre, which at times can be wonderful but not of a professional calibre. Long Island deserves better. Perhaps we have the making of a major regional theatre in Northport.

I love the elitism of some who think that named actors and actresses have cornered the market on talent. I have been going to Broadway as well as regional theater for years and I find that the enthusiasm of young professional actors trying to make it in a difficult industry more exciting than over paid actors who are so impressed with their celebrity that they could phone in their performances. Don't believe all the hype you hear.

why is it impossible to"trudge" into manhattan? i have two kids under 6 and do it all the time!

I tried to send you the box office phone number but this site won't allow it. But you can go to their website at www.engemantheater.com and get all the information you need. You will love it - as we did!! There is valet parking, and the piano bar is open two hours before the show and after the show - and you can bring your drink to your seat as they have cup holders at every seat. What could be better than that?

If you have time to trudge into Manhattan on a regular basis you are very lucky. Most of us don't have that luxury and to think that Manhattan is the only theater venue in the world is very narrow minded.

WHAT A RIPP OFF !

I work and play in NYC, and love the energy of the city. I see plenty of Broadway shows there but it is delightful to just go into the town of Northport and enjoy one of their plays. I have seen several, including the children's matinee and I LOVED all of them. They have a beautiful piano bar where they have passed around free hors'doevers and serve an array of fine cocktails.

How can anyone say anything negative about this theater??????? It's wonderful! I even buy tickets as birthday gifts for family & friends.

As for food, Go eat at Maroni's. A great Italian restaurant. Or the Ritz or the new Japanese restaurant. Skipper's is fun for burgers and other fun food.

I have seen two shows at the Engeman, Lend Me a Tenor, and Man of La Mancha. Both productions were GREAT. The sets were beautiful. The cast as good as you would see on Broadway.

I have just ordered tickets for my third show The Foreigner, and expect to be a season subscriber the next time this option is available.

The renovation of the theater was wonderful, great sight lines in the stadium style seating. Ample seats, wide aisles and great acoustics. The bar is lively, the valet parking convenient, and the whole theater experience enjoyable.

I still go into the city, but its great to have this quality of shows so closely available.

Sorry you feel that way, I guess you havent seen the class of people living in Northport. I sorry the $55.00 is so much for you but I guess you haven't been to NYC to realize that a show is about 120.00. Sorry you live such a shallow life.
