This murder could have been easily avoided if the following laws were enacted.

1. No one should be allowed to possess a knife without a permit.

2.A knife permit will only be issued to those without a criminal record, and only after taking a course on the safe handling of knives from a certified knife instructor.

3.A complete ban on assault knives.

4.Report a lost,stolen or bent knives within 72 hours.

5.Plastic knives without serrated edges are exempt, from the above.

Another two lives wasted by a wanton murder. This will necessitate an address change for the next forty years for Mr Berube.
Self-defense is not an option here. Why wasn't the burning called in to the fire department. I believe the fire index for the past couple of weeks was high. There would have been a police officer dispatched there with the fire dept. The murder could have been prevented by those responding adults. The crowd would have been dispersed and everyone sent home alive.
If it was a state forest the burning may have been illegal. The neighbors should have reported it to the authorities.
This type of gathering in East Granby shows that the town recreation departments are not doing their jobs. It appears that nothing is going on in town positive for the kids to do on a Friday or Saturday night than go to a forest, get drunk or high and get killed.
My condolences to the family of the deceased. He died too young.

Neighbors? What neighbors? You really have to drive down Tunxis Ave in EG to realize how remote it is. And recreation department? What recreation department. For a town that has less than 300 students in it's high school, it's a waste of money to have any sort of tax-dollar funded recreation program...
The EG residents aren't the problem. The woods parties have been going on for decades. As long as the crowd was only Granby?east Granby kids, we had no problems. The residents of EastGranby and Granby know the land, and respect it. They get together on the ridge, have a campfire, drink some beer, relax and enjoy the outdoors.
The problems arise when out-of-towners step onto our turf. They don't know East Granby, nor do they care enough to respect it and keep it clean, quiet, and safe as the rest of us do.
Why do you think there is no hot-lunch program at the high school?? Because if there's no hot lunch provided by the school district, then our school CAN'T be part of the program that busses in "disadvantaged" hartford kids. It may sound far-fetched, but our town does what it can to keep people from coming here. And this is exactly why. It's the out-of-towners who have no respect for OUR HOME, and they come and destroy it. If you can't keep your own home safe, don't come to ours and wreck it.

You brought up a good point, being that there are not activities for the kids to do.
Way back when I was a teenager, schools were open at night, with all sorts of activities. There were dances every Saturday night. There were clubs to join etc.
All gone now.
I suppose the funds for these programs dried up to pay the big six figure salaries to the useless State bureaucrats.

wow.
what a desolate thread.
no surprise, though...the story is about a murder that happened in the suburbs instead of Hartford, so the usual bunch of racist idiots stayed away.

My condolensces go out to the Jensen family.

A few weird "tendrils" of info that dont seem to connect to the actual story. I get the feeling this story is leaning more toward the tensions between East Granby and Windsor Locks kids, and that Windsor, Windsor Locks kids are at the trail in the last few years to the dismay of East Granby kids. You all are obviously not from the area or you would know that the Metacomet Trail and the sourrounding area locally refered to as Spoonville and the Gourge have been hangouts for local youth and adults for years and not just those residing in East Granby. The area is at the corner of the town where it meets Windsor and not far from Windsor Locks or Simsbury to the east and west. The fact that this young man was murdered is being lost in a bunch of "stuff" to fill out a story. Leave the stuff out and give the facts. A good kid from Windsor Locks, camping with friends was stabbed to death by some lunatic and his friends from East Windsor. Please note these "facts" do not in any way, shape or form mention East Granby or Windsor youth or the issue these two groups have with using the same "free space" fondly refered to as Spoonville.

The Courant needs to stick to the story, focus on those who are directly a part of it and quit sensationalizing everything and anything - its why you loose readers daily and those of us from the area are looking elsewhere for news information.

My sympathies to Chris Jensen's family - he was a nice young man when I knew him a few years back through my own teen.

This is not a new hang out for kids from Windsor Locks - I am in my mid 40's and we used to hang out at Spoonville in the mid 70's. I don't think it's that the kids are from different towns - it's the fact that kids don't fight with their fists anymore that has caused this tragedy. It's all about guns and other weapons. I'm sure that young man that committed the murder is regretting his actions right now and is crying, if nothing else, to himself. Did he not think he would actually be taking a life that can not be brought back? His life is over as well. It's so scary, as I have a 17 & 22 year old and am horrified by some of the things I hear from them. It really is different than it was when I was a teenager and I pray for the youth of today. God Bless all.

Honestly what small town has things for kids to do on weekends. There are no activities in my town. If the kids want to keep busy we drive them places, the movie, mall etc. there's nothing else for them to do in the area but hang around. Usually if a fire is in the woods, people don't see the fire or smell it because it's small.

I don't see where it lists East Windsor or Enfield.
Either way this kid ended his life when he killed the other kid. Two lives gone in one minute. As well as the parents etc. My heart goes out to them. As a parent myself I can not imagine what they are going through.
