I Will Always Love Gary Indiana

Y'know I haven't lived in Gary in over 30 years. Why is it that I remember EVERYTHING in my childhood there yet can't remember what I had from breakfast this morning? Here's why!!

I was born there and raised off 11th Avenue and Grant (near the old Anderson Co). During the 60's and 70's downtown Gary was great for a kid like me at Christmas. Sears, Penney's, H.G. Gordon's, Dunkin Donuts, Palace and State Theaters, Goldblatt's etc are still fresh in my mind today!! My Mom worked at W.T. Grant's. Dad worked at U.S. Steel. As a teenager I worked at S.S. Kresge's. We all were stuck on our tv sets as the Jackson Five appeared on Soul Train, American Bandstand, etc.

I graduated from Horace Mann High School in the late 1970's as Gary was fading away. Everyone started shopping at Merrillville's Southlake Mall (now Westfield's). Dating was great, too. I loved my all-Black neighborhood and church.

In my opinion, Gary deteriorated for several reasons:
1)white flight when Richard Hatcher became mayor,
2)the steel industry went overseas (big reason)
3)the legislature in Indianapolis gave funds to all-white cities
4)unemployment caused many to join the military
5)too many liquor stores, senior homes, churches and foreigners.

I love Gary more now that I ever did before. I had no idea how good I had it as a child. Thanks for posting this subject. Blessings to all.

Since I met my husband when I was 18 I doubt very seriously that I stole him from anyone! Was married for 34 years and I'm only 52 ~ you're so smart ~ you do the math honey!! Trash is trash and that is what the majority of people from that area are!!

The story I reported above was not a hoax! The woman I am referring to is trash thru and thru! Has 2 chldren by 2 different fathers and never has either one of the them with her ~ her parents raise them! My husband turned into a Meth Addict and now resorts to Alcohol to sooth what he can no longer get ~ Meth! All you idiots keep denying what your City is ~ doesn't matter to me~ it only shows me that you are relatives of the SASQUATCH and you are trying your best to make her out to be something she isn't! She has my husband but continues to harass me! She can have him ~ he's 57 years old with diabete's that he does not control with medicine ~ his eyesight is deterarating ~ he no longer makes the money she craves! She wanted the life I had with my husband ~ it was a life without drugs and he worked hard and profided for his family ~ now that his brain is scrambled by the Meth ~ he can no longer drive a Semi or work a decent job! She used him for what he was worth then left him to die alone! She can have him ~ I don't need the aggrivation!! All I know is that this woman worked at the Super 8 Motel and the Manager there verified what I already knew ~ she did other things for money other than checking them into their rooms! And I was told that if my husband thought her child was his ~ then he was crazy ~ too many men to count! Face it ~ your town has been over ridden by drug pushers and Meth Labs all over! I see no way of reclaiming your city! I used to ride with my husband in his Semi over 25 years ago and back then it was called the Crossroads Truck Stop and it was a decent town then! But you have some really sick people up there! San Diego ~ I have a feeling your really aren't from there ~ I really don't care and I don't care about her! She began stalking me around 6 years ago ~ she nor my husband were woman or man enough to just come to me and tell me that they were seeing each other and it was over ~ no my husband came home every single week and told me every day that he loved me! I stayed home and raised my family and took care of my husbands business! No partying for me ~ no drugs ~ just lots of trips to school events and going after my husband wherever he was broke down at! If that is a bad thing then you have no morals what so ever! I didn't cheat on my husband ~ a lie he told to ease his concious!
