Ice cream hot spots in the Midwest

Bauder Pharmacy in Des Moines Iowa. Still made fresh, by hand, right there in the pharmacy. Takes you way back. Great ice cream and nice people.
If you go to Des Moines for ice cream, be sure to go to Graziano's Grocery for the Italian meats, cheeses and spices. Their hot italian sausage is worth walking a thousand miles for. They've been in the same building since prehistoric times and the place is permeated with the spice smell. It's where Tony Soprano would've shopped, if he shopped. Mmmm.
Annie's Ice Cream Parlor in beautiful downtown Sidney Iowa. Home of the Sidney Rodeo. On the edge of the beautiful Loess Hills. If you time your trip just right you might get to see some vintage tractors and a real stock car race. Now that's fun.

OK - we went on a road trip this weekend to try ice cream.. first stop -the Wilton Candy Kitchen - they only had 4 flavors of ice cream made: chocolate, vanilla, strawberry and cherry pecan. All were good, not great. George and Thelma were a hoot - but we were kinda disappointed. Next stop: Viroqua WI to Sibby's Organic Zone - what a waste of time/drive/day. Only thing they had was vanilla soft serve...so very disappointing. The guy behind the counter said, we haven't had ice cream in weeks...who knows when we'll have it again.

Overall - very disappointed!!!!

the candy kitchen sucks. takes one slice of cheese and puts it between 2 pcs of bread, put it on a hot plate/grill and call it a grilled cheese "sandwich". does the same thing with the ham 1 slice! if you stop there aks them about when the huge blizzard came thru town and the bought all the milk they could at Jakes (now, he was a great guy!) and then sold the milk to the stranded for 3 times what it should cost........this is true. more later.
