It would be helpful for the readers to include a map of the area in question with this story. No graphics department?

Coffee shop talk this morning is that Western will close their Bloomfield refinery in January.
Couple this with the pending layoffs at Four Corners Power Plant and BHP, where are the people going to come from to buy additional houses ?

If a company doesn't have the finances to build
this project themsselves, why does the city
have to spend millions of dollars and get involved?
This is a lot of homes for one area, which would
create traffic, utility, sewer problems, etc.
Has anyone checked the past performances of this
company and their financial status?

So where will the shutdown of the Bloomfield refinery leave the local producers who need to sell their crude?

You got to say:NO: to this. It is no time to put out any money, that a bank or lone co, would not say yes to. we don't need to lay off any more city workers, or put on more taxes to help cover a loss. Things don't look to good down the road for the next year for SJC so lets get what needs to be done and not go looking for more at this time.

Western will truck it out to Gallup - trucking will cost more.
Then gasoline, diesel, etc will have to be brought in from other sources - Western will raise prices for gasoline and diesel - they will charge as much more as they think they can get away with for they own most of all filling-stations.
The job losses will add to the already devastated economy, price increases will have a greater effect.
Farmington's Mayor, Manager and City Councilors will never learn - the people have had enough - It is Time for A TEA PARTY !!

'Developers asked the city to fund a road that would connect the La Plata Highway and PiƱon Hills Boulevard, a bridge that would cross the La Plata Highway, a sewer line and other infrastructure'.
Pinon Hills Boulevard already has a bridge across the La Plata River and it connects to the La Plata highway. Another road would be a road to nowhere, yet another Rob Mayes bright idea in these times of citizen's greatest hardship !!

"Part four would LET the city participate in financing parts of the project."

What's in it for the city? Is this development even in the city? They want to hook up to the city sewer and they want US to fund it??? No, no, no.

Build more houses at a time when people aren't buying houses and home values are dropping? Building more houses will glut the market and our home values will drop even more. No, no, no.

You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift.
You cannot lift the wage earner up by pulling the tax payer down.
You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting government hatred.
You cannot build character and courage by taking away people's money and independence.
You cannot help people permanently by keeping them broke.

No, let's just let people throw up more trashy trailers, tire heaps and oil wells. God forbid we actually do some planning for decent, zoned residential areas in this town. Let's keep doing things the way we always have as opposed to trying to raise this town to a more planned, organized and attractive level. Let's keep this town looking like a third-world country: the rich in the rich areas and the poor in the trailer shanty-towns living next to trash heaps.

Absolutely NOT! There are more than enough properties for sale/foreclosed/short-sale that need to be moved. This is a horrible decision by the city. Give the millions of dollars this project will cost to the NM MFA program to help current owners and buyers get affordable housing in the homes that are already existing.
