well as long as the boy understands how to handle the gun and the safety issues, then why not? Glad we are not reading about how the bear ate his sister...

The 11 year old boy was home alone with his younger sisters, there was a loaded gun in the house, and obviously not near any neighbors. So, where were the parents? And they weren't in school either?

We're talking about Idaho here, not Paris. Of course there was a loaded gun in the house. And contrary to what you imagine, I'm sure the parents were in school, getting ready for their super-hard 3rd grade equivalency exams. Back off, Beavis.

It is unimaginable what it must be like - not to have experienced real life everyday outdoors country experiences.

Experiences of the natural world and how to cope with them, not only to survive but to prosper.

And, how challenging and actually life threatening simply living with nature really is.

NATURE IS BRUTAL - YOU WON'T LAST LONG IF YOU DON'T HAVE A CLUE WHAT YOU ARE IN FOR AND HOW TO DEAL WITH IT.

All the goofy city folk posts are unbeleivably uninformed and naive.

Yet these same people are constantly claiming the rights of the wild beast over man. What is this insane cult that knows nothing of real survival? Who are the people who perpetrate these myths?

If I lived in bear country and did not teach my 11 year old to shoot, I should be locked up for felony child endangerment.

I've lived in bear country, and recently moved back, to the same house, and ever since the 1990's there has been a "Mama-bear" and Her cubs, that hibernate under my house during the winter.
I'm back, and She has just this week moved in, under My house, with 2 new cubs, less than 6' under where I sleep.
My new dog is'nt that happy about it, but My last dog got used to it, and during the winter my closest Neighbor would tell me that "I can hear You, Your dog, and those bears snoring all night".

It's great to be back "Home"..

Last Wed was Veterans Day = no school
parents most likely had to work

If Fish and Game had no problem with the boys action
I don't either:)

Kids with guns or gun access, not a good thing! He should have left the poor bear alone, and if it tried to enter the house then I could see a reason for him to shooting it, but still, kids with unsupervised access to loaded weapons - no so good!
I've been properly trained with firearm by My Father when I was around 6, and had a .22 mag, and a .410 shotgun with the money I made off delivering the IJ.
When my Girls were about 15-16 I taught Them (without Their Mother's knowledge) how to safely handle firearms.
My oldest now is pestering Me for a Ruger Mini-14.
My Youngest was on the RTD bus in Denver, and found a paperbag containg a loaded handgun, She safely unloaded it, and brought it to the Driver.
if You don't like guns, don't own one, but don't infringe on Our rights, please.

That's true, I'd forgotten about the holiday (however I did fly the flag for our vets) But they were still home alone. And if he had just wounded the bear instead of killing it, we would be reading about a black bear that killed several children. That would be horrible.

Oops, guess I'll have to go back and see for myself what the date was. Too many differences of opinion here. So .. guess the parents were in church if it was a Sunday?

quote: with his younger sisters last Wednesday when the bear showed .
which would make it the 11th Veterans Day
story was updated: The Associated Press
Updated: 11/15/2009 05:03:18 PM PST
That would explain the date line

the story does not explain why the children where home alone, many speculation can be given on that one incl. gone to get milk?
BUT if the officials file no charges against the family, well?
I have friends in MI that live on a wildlife
preserve to do wild animal rescue, they have regular Baer "visitors"
they are VERY careful with their trash, bird feeders, do not let their dogs roam etc.to keep the peace.
Before going out, they make lots of noise.
I am not thrilled about the killing of the Baer
Thank Goodness the kids are ok
the rest is really Hindsight, second guessing
could the boy have scared off the Baer with
clanging pots and pans, or maybe shot off a warning? maybe, hard to say, was not there!
Given the Fish and Game response of letting the family have the Baer, I doubt they would do that
if they felt any wrong doing, just food for thought
