Sherri Norquist opens 'no-kill' animal haven

I do live in Cleveland.... for some reason it shows up as Hattiesburg. But I have nothing but love for Sherri, she is a great person. She has lived thru a lot in her years!!

I found two kittens in the trash behind my work. THey appear to be about two weeks old and they were wet cold and crying...

I hope that they are ok. MAke sure that you stimulate them to go to the bathroom at that age they can't go on their own.

They are doing really well but one is the runt and she is so little. She is eating and they are both going tee tee with stimulation but nothing else. They seem to be progressing. But I do have a question, they seem to have eye infections they are matted and I wash them with a warm cloth and it seems to help.. do I need something from the vet for them? I bought replacement formula and something called seneca (or something) for fleas and they are clean now, but the eyes dont seem so good

Dear Genuinely cncerned...(as I do not know who you are) First of all my illness does not diminish my love and true concern for animals, second, i don't have bad bones, Never claimed to have MS don't know where that came from or who said it, my ailments are serious painful and sometimes dabilitating, but really not your business. If you are truly concerned, try volunteering to help animals in some way. Even volunteer at the local animal shelter, feed a starving stray, have your pet spayed or neutered, these should be your concern, not me...

I believe the CLeveland Animal Shelter needs to be shut down. I volunteered there when I was 12 and it was DISQUSTING. And why do you NEED to put animals down for "not finding a home in time." I personally believe that's mean and cruel and just plain lazy on the shelter's part.. I heard that Serenity is a no-kill shelter which I think is FANTASTIC! But... is that true? I'm looking for ways to donate to that shelter pretty soon. But is it worth it really? I hear that Sheri now works there. If so.. Sheri, do you believe that you need to put an animal down because they can't find a home? Have you in the past? If so. I don't want anything to do with Serenity or the nasty shelter.

Dear Animal Human Liberation, Yes she still helps with Serenity. She handles the cats and we handle the dogs.As for putting an animal down because their time is up NO WE DO NOT PUT AN ANIMAL DOWN FOR THAT!!!!!!!! yes we may have to put an animal down but it is because of SEVERE aggression, Such as a dog being trained to fight,Seriuos illness that we have tried to treat and the animal is suffering or Seriuos injury. We try to work with all of our animals to prepare them for loving homes. I bring a lot of the animals into my personal home to see how they react to my own personal dogs and my 9 & 5 year old. This way I can say this dog can be placed in what type of home. Since we have been working with the animals in March we have taken in over 100+ animals and proud to say we have placed over 50+ in loving homes. I have even traveled to Colorado with 20 dogs and a cost of $1600.00 to Serenity and $600.00 to the Bolivar County Humane Society just to place dogs that had been with us for a few months and not being adopted out locally.To top it off we did not get a dime for these wonderful pups and proud to say they all got adopted out to wonderful homes there. That is how far we will go to save a animal. As far as the Shelter goes they will have to answer for themselves, we have even gone there and picked up a total of 30 dogs that were scheduled to be put down and yes they all found homes. If you are really interested in what we are doing and what we stand for, come by and judge it for your self. Anyone is welcome anytime.

That was a great post Serenity. Yes, I am ashamed to say that policy dictated my actions when i worked at the Animal Shelter and there were animals that I put to sleep. Of course We did keep them much longer that normal. I am so pleased to be a part of the Sanctuary that is able to commit to finding animals a home and that only extreme cases and under the advice of a veterinarian, do a few animals have to be put to sleep. I am one that is TIRED of the senseless killing and advocate the requirement of SPAY AND NEUTER I love taking care of the cats and that is about all that my health will allow me to do anymore. Thank God for Serenity and Connie and Bill, and yes, do go see them, volunteer, donate and God BLess.

As to why do you think they need to be shut down? When Sherri left they was no longer to have anyone under the age of 18 to be volunteering there so it must have been when she was there. Also you have so many strays around and wild dogs around it is easy for that shelter to get over run. Even with people bring there animals in just cause they dont want them or tired of them so they have to do what they do and i don't belive they need shut down they are doing a fine job there and i was there not long ago and they are redoing alot of things there to make the place better. They have a fenced in area for a play yard for all the dogs that get a long with eachother to play. They are taking well care of them that i can see and they treat there dogs with a vet to. To try to get them well. They have beds for the dogs to lay on up off the floor so i would like to know why there place should be shut down and why you think its so nasty. SO I WOULD TELL PEOPLE THEY NEED TO GO LOOK AT IT BEFORE YOU THROW STONES AT THE NEW WORKERS THERE AT THE SHELTER. THEN IF NOTHING ELSE GO THERE AND HELP. THANK YOU .

This is for those of you who think that cleveland bolivar county animal shelter should be shut down, and those who think sherry is the best thing for these animals. well i am here to tell you, sherry is the most conieving person in cleveland. Sherry says that the shelter dictated her actions when she worked there well that is a LIE!!!! I worked and volunteered at the shelter and there were many animals that walked through that door that sherry would put to sleep just because they did not fit her standards. She fails to mention all of the dogs and cats she put to sleep only days before going into labor because she said she had no room. I think that the animal shelter is better off now than it ever has been. NO ONE DICTATED SHERRY'S ACTIONS BUT SHERRY!! Those of you who think that the shelter is lazy and just puts animals to sleep just because they don't want to deal with well you are sadly mistaken. As for serenity and getting most of your animals homes, you do not accept any more animals when you get full. well guess what the animal shelter cannot turn down animals just because they are full. they have to make room. Keep up the good work Cleveland Bolivar County Animal Shelter! I support you all the way in everything that you do!!

When things are said about me I have no control over them. If they are said to me, i will try to respond. As for the Animal Shelter, I believe they are trying to run the shelter to the best of their ability, I have never said they should shut down. I have nothing but respect for the manager and know that she truly cares for the animals. SHe too is bound by policy. As for Serenity, yes we are limited by space, but we have rescued at least 30 dogs from the shelter to prevent them from being put to sleep and yes it was the manager who asked for our help. Each one of them has been placed. We are trying to work together folks, the animals are the ones who benefit when we all try.
I too commend you Ro, Don't listen to everything you hear if they aren't willing to say who they are. I think you are doing a good job!
THe concrete sealing was much needed as it is true when built, the concrete was already there, and we were assured by the contractor that the sealant was sufficient. It never was. Thanks for getting that done! As for commnets, please direct them to me, not at me, I can handle it... and be brave enough to take credit for your comments.

I think it is truly sad that ppl have nothing better to do than run down a person's character... I have known Sheri at least 25 years. I have always known her to be honest and trustworthy. Many years ago, I had a dog. It got hit by a truck and was taken to the animal shelter. She did her best to save our pet, but he had to be put down because of his injuries. She cried along with my then 7 year old son. I have never heard her make negative comments about the shelter. But please remember, she helped to build that shelter.... give her a little credit!!

I am not so sure whats going on @ either shelter. The cleveland animal shelter dont care about the animals they are always putting them down for no reason. Are they even going through a vet or just putting them down. the so called "manager" is never there if it were not for the help they have all the dogs would die... or is that whats happening now? i think they need to wipe out everyone and start over on staff. get a manager who is gonna show up for work and do her or his job. The people there now have turned the shelter job into a job for lazy people that sit around and order the inmates around. its sad!! the shelter people should obide by the same laws as we do... cant have but so many dogs that you own.i am so sick of this mess... someone needs to step up and do something and quit letting people get away with this.... WE NEED NEW WORKERS

I also use to work with Sherri, when it came time to put animals down we would walk through the shelter and have to make the choice, who goes and who stays. It was not just Sherri who chose. As for the animals about to give birth, which is worst putting them down before the babies are born or after. It's not fun but it is a fact people have to accept there are too many animals and not enough caring people. Shelter work is a love/hate job. You love working with the animals, but hate having to put them down. I glad to see Serenity and the Shelter working together. It's all about getting the animals out the front door not the back door.

That was good there Ann we all love the animals and we hate to know that they are out on the street walking and no one cares for them if you get a animal make sure you are going to be there for it till the end. you all have to see that shelter workers all over the world love the animals but they also have to make room for others that is coming in when they get so many and there is no place for them then they have to put down but know some people don't understand that at all but the ones that have to do that it really gets to them. But you have to do what you have to for the animals and some times there is so many that you cant help but you want to help them. MANY PEOPLE THAT WORK WITH ANIMALS TAKE THEM HOME WITH THEM TO GIVE THEM A LOVING HOME THAT WAY ITS TO HELP THEM CAUSE THEY HAVE GROWN TO LOVE THEM AND OTHERS IN THERE TO THEY CAN'T SAVE THEM EVEN IF THEY WANT TO. So people really need to look at things as them workers at shelters put your self in there place and see how they have to work and do things. animals coming in skin and bones or wild ones that they want to help and try so hard to get them to come around and they are so wild you can't. People think would you do what these people do every min of the day and work like they do taking them home bottle feeding them and having to get up ever 2 hours to feed a little one that someone don't want anymore. Please think about how people feel that work with unwanted and homeless animals everyday . As far as Serenity and the Cleveland bolivar county animal shelter working together that is great you have to have help with groups and work with those around you .Everyone wants to help these animals and that is what they are there for. So please think of the ones that puts the time and money in there. All the animal groups you are doing a great job keep up the good work.

Why you for to bothering nice lady Sherri? Is she not a woman who love many? She have big heart. Cannot we all jus get along?
