Im Mexican. But when I was in college- some 15 yrs ago. There was 2 groups I was not interested in--- The Greeks- and MECHA. In regards to MECHA- I just didnt like their train of thought. As for the oligarchy that rules Mexico... I guess its the money that they have. Many of those in power- have familial ties to European families. But somehow they've been able to hold on to power- by various methods of corruption. Someone who has studied the mexican political system may have more in depth knowledge... but yeah- you go to places like Guadalajara- and hang out in certain places (Centro de) and youll see the elite. Go to other places within the city and youll see the elites family--- light skinned- green eyed- funny talking rich folks. I wonder if the cartels keep it up- it will come to a point that some sort of civil unrest will occur- and possibly topple many of those corrupt in power?

Thank you Terry!!! Preserve the culture & prioritize her education! Way to go! terry wrote: i just had a sweet 16 for my daughter who very well deserved her day. We also have money set aside for her college. This is part of our culture and should stay that way regardless of the economy. My husband and I paid for the whole party but usually the sweet 15 has several sponsors who pay for different items such as the dress, cake, food, music and d.j. so it's about 200-400 a sponsor whice isn't bad at all. I'm pround our us latinos at least have some tradition left unlike others. DON'T HATE..

This is some kind of illegal Mexican party when the illegal girl turns 15 or 16. Then at that point starts having kids {four to eight or more} so us legal hard working "Americans" pay for with are ultra high taxes. This is a outrage to the "American Citizen".

Its a shame that you don't bother to go to Church either because this Traditon is deep rooted and million's of Christian/Catholics follow this beautiful tradion of Quinceneara-Sweet 16.

TACOS wrote: Hey whatever helps the economy.. Big Shiny SUVS??? Didn't you just read she is not going to be able to get her new car she needs. Most of these people know how to handle their finances much better than you do. They dont take their crazy vacations and buy cars they can't afford. They dont have credit card debt like most americans do. I know all my family does not at least. We dont go and purchase things just so it looks like we have money. A quincenera is just a part of culture, not a status thing. You are obviously clueless. I see lots of VERY nice cars rolling out of shady neighborhoods every day. There are a lot of people (MANY of them latino) who like to drive a $30K (or more) car and pretend they have money. Meanwhile, many people who live up in the hills and have homes that are still worth the better part of $1M (or more) have Civics and Corollas in their driveway. To each his own. But don't pretend latinos don't like to put on a front.

Oh yeah...
A few years back, a latina who worked for me got married. She & her fiance's families spent $30K or more on her wedding. A week or two after she got back from her honeymoon, the starter went out on her car.
She had to carpool with her husband for a month because they didn't have a couple hundred dollars to fix her car! I laughed my ass off!!
Yeah, a lot of latinos like to pretend they have money.
