My mom used to make a special trip to the Roosevelt Road store "back in the day", and there has never been a better U-Boat sandwich since -- nowhere, never, not-happening. I am proud to have had my first taste of fast food at Italian U-Boat and it set the bar very high for all salami and ham sandwiches for me.(And I don't even really like meat.) I have been disappointed by all other imitators ever since. Every. Time. But thanks for the yummy memories, Vito and Jim!!

My first job was at an Italian UBoat chain in 1981. It was very family oriented. Thanks to them, I was introduced to Capacolla, provolone cheese and other exotic things. This was so exiting for a girl who grew up on Velvetta & Spam. I also felt that it was a step above working at McDonald's or Burger King at the time.

The U-Boat Capicola is still the best sub I have ever had. Even better than the very good one at Augustino's.

I used to go to the one on 63rd street just east of Cicero on the north side of the street. Loved the salami subs, very tasty sandwiches and they never skimped on quality like a lot of the chains do.

There were two near where I grew up at 87th and Cicero and 90th and Harlem. They always had great food.

I used to go to the U-Boat in Woodfield Mall back in the day. Great sandwich at a great price, plus if memory serves me correctly, you could get a beer there too! Top that, Subway! As for now, Hero's at Western and Addison is where its at!

I loved the U-Boat. I was very sad to see it go. I still crave their sandwiches. Tri-Village in Hanover Park had a great Italian Sub as well!

I used to go to the U-Boat on Cicero on the north side every week in grammer school. Best subs I ever had.

In 1979 Italian U-Boot ran a contest to name their mascot. Well, I won. I entered the contest at their Cicero location which was a block from my apartment. The prize: a trip for two to Las Vegas, which my wife and I used for our honey. Somewhere are photos of me with the two models in Comiskey Park, where the name and prize winner were announced.

The Italian U-Boat was the best sub around. Augustino's is close, but there was something special about the U-Boat.

Boy! do I remember the Original Italian U-Boat. That was, and still is, the best sub I've ever had. All my cousin would have to say is" let's get a U boat." and we were on our way to Highland and Roosevelt.

The Italian U-Boats were tasty sandwiches. I used to get them, a bunch! I wish they were still around as an alternative to Subway.
Yep, tasty!

Tri-Village in Hanover Park...boy I haven't heard that name in a long time. They used to have a sandwich called the "Lottaburger". Someone else mentioned Yankee Doodle Dandy, there used to be one in Bensenville near York road and Green street. Anyone recall a place on the far NW side called Henry's or O'Henry's? Where was that?

In 1979 I flew into Midway airport regularly with Airborne Express. The pilots and I would head down the street to the Italian U-Boat to get a sandwich before leaving. I always looked forward to getting one, they were great! Sad to hear they are gone.

Daily Horoscope for December 26

Taurus

It's important that you leave yourself plenty of room to manouvres during the weeks ahead, as Mercury turns retro today, especially when it comes to making decisions and airing your opinions to the world. You need to be as flexible as possible right now, otherwise you could find that you've boxed yourself into a corner and have to do some serious back-tracking. You need to consider all points of view and not just your own.
