If parents knew how they were being ripped off on school field trips they would never pay for another one. Students who pay are overcharged to pay for student that can't or won't pay. Teachers are allowed to pick "deserving" students to go for free. Teachers have sole discretion and make the decisions without knowing if a student can't pay. Of course other teachers kids are always on the "deserving" list. Parents should refuse to pay and demand that their kids be included. After all, field trips take place during the school day and students shouldn't be allowed to pay to get out of class while those without money are forced to stay behind and go to class,

Field trips can be pricey because the cost of bus drivers, mileage, lunches, and subs must be included. IF what you say is true, I would bet it is a problem that is unique to your particular building.

How much do field trips cost?
I mean, my grandson hasn't went on a field trip yet(3rd grade) and my kids are so old I can't remember what we paid for field trips back then.
I guess it all depends on where the kids are going eh? Some venues can be costly even with the educational discount most places have, no?
What do you consider a costly field trip to be?

This kind of stuff also happens with sports teams. If u can afford to pay, do so. If you can't, work something out.

This goes on alot. Its part of the culture we live in. The people who work hard and live within their means pay, but it would be "unfair" for the ones that can't afford not to be able to go so just jack the rate up to cover the ones you know won't pay. Happens all the time.....then, when you try to stand up and say "this isn't right!" you are labeled as uncaring and insensative. Helping someone in need should be my decision not someone elses because my idea of "in need" and others idea of "in need" are totally different.

After all, field trips take place during the school day and students shouldn't be allowed to pay to get out of class while those without money are forced to stay behind and go to class, If parents on Facebook, they should put something like this there and people will probably offer to help. Costs are high for the schools and it stinks that it creates kind of a class warfare since those who can't afford to go miss out. A lot of times though, if parents simply ask, they will get help. That is not a handout or begging either, it's putting a need out to a community, and communities should and DO pull together and help each other out. Just putting out the issue without asking will probably lead to offers of help. My sister is a music teacher and had students who could not afford to go on a music trip... she was upset and ranted on FB about it, and several people offered to pay for a student or 2... she had about a dozen who needed help and every single one got to go because people offered to help and sent checks to the school for those kids. She was really shocked, she wasn't even asking for help, she was just ranting and surprised at how many people messaged her about it. In this environment of entitlement and handout bashing, people will still help ONE at a time when it's for one kid and not about taxes and that makes a big difference. It's totally different when it's personal and about one kid or person they know is a real person instead of anonymous masses taking advantage. You are right, BTW. Opportunities for our young people should not be based on their parents finances. Lots of people still care about pulling together and would help if they knew. If a parent in this situation or you on their behalf even put an address on here to send money for a school trip I'd bet they'd be surprised when a couple people responded, and all it takes is one person to make a difference to make sure a kid gets treated equally. I know I would, and I have done it before. No kid should be left out just because of hard times. This country needs to get back to taking care of each other and communities... it's because the government is trying to manage it that it isn't working and people are so upset about it. I believe most people want to and are willing to support each other when it is voluntary. If one person helps another who is having a bad day or year, who is to say the situation won't be reversed in the future? We all get back in life what we put out, eventually. There's no shame in supporting each other. I hope every kid in the class gets to go on the trip.

I understand what your saying but I would like to add that sometimes parents just need to tell their kids that they just can't afford it. Little Johnny will be okay......my kids turned out alright just like I did....it's okay to say "no"

That's the whole problem with the way things are... everything is so cold and anonymous. People will pull together if the government would trust us to do it and LET us do it. No one ever thinks of just simply being honest and open and asking anymore, it's really too bad. Politics hurt everyone. We'd all be better off by acting like a community and talking to each other instead of being TOLD we have to. Most people are good and giving and do not need to be told or made to help. Being made to do what we would do makes us not want to and resent being forced and pits us against each other. That is destroying us, and there is really no need for it or any point in it. We would all help voluntarily if politicians school administrations simply shut up and asked nicely and honestly.

Again someone wanting everything handed to them for free GET A JOB AND PAY FOR YOUR OWN KID!!!!!!!! Always looking for a hand out that is what is wrong with the great country. And really how many field trips do students take!!?? COME ON MAN !!!!!

Although there can be some extenuating circumstances (both parents losing jobs, etc.), the first thought I had about this thread (other than it's too early for a cold beer) is this:
If you can't afford to have kids, don't have them!!!
IMHO, this includes sports, field trips, proms, etc.

Waaaaaaaaaah, Waaaaaaaaaah, Waaaaaah, somebody call the wah b u lance for all you that think your entitled to anything. No one said I nor anyone else owed u anything! Live your life and pay your own way. It is pretty evident why DC does not pay for your child to go on field trips, They don't have the money. And if they go up on your taxes to pay for entitlement services, you really squall. Good Grief! Shut UP!

My 11 year old daughter attends Chapel Hill Elementary and she is going on a field trip on May 1st. It cost me $25.00 not counting lunch. She took one other feild trip this school year and that was just to the courthouse and didn't cost anything. I'm a teacher and going on a field trip is extrememly hard work beforehand with all of the paper work that has to be done and all of the permissions from the board, principal, and parents that must be obtained. So, not many teachers are willing to do them. Plus, with all of the budget cuts in recent years many systems have banned field trips alltogether.

I thought field trips were a think of the past, due to the budget/recession. My daughter is at South Douglas and is in 4th grade. She has NEVER been on a field trip the entire time she has been in school.

My daughter is in 8th grade at Fairplay Middle School. Each year, she has had 1 field trip. 6th and 7th grades were right around $50 (one was to Dahlonega, the other was to the Bodies Exhibit and Dialogue in the Dark at Atlantic Station). This year, she is going on her 8th grade trip for gifted students to Tybee Island. It is a 3 day trip, and cost $255 total. We had 3 months to pay for the trip. I believe it was a $60 deposit, the remaining $195 was due about a month later. I have no problem paying any of those costs. While the Tybee trip seemed pricey, she earned it. Straight A's, excellent attendance and behavior are deserving in my book. Through elementary (Bright Star)school, she went on 2 trips, and those were only with her Program Challenge class. My 6 year old is in 1st grade at Bright Star and has not been on a trip either year. Both girls went on multiple trips in Pre-K at Sike's School. I do indeed think that field trips are becoming a thing of the past, or are reserved for the better behaved kids. Simply my opinion.
