This is a real shame. I remember watching the race when I was a child and the going to the Old Fashioned Bargain Days on Main St.

The teams schedule their races a year in advance. So when the race was cancelled last year they did not want to lock in to the Fitchburg date again.

Yes they can and do register within a few weeks before the actual race but the teams have their own formal schedule completed a year ago in order to plan for flights, hotel rooms, etc.

Until they pave and restore Main street they would need mountain bikes to race anyways. Some of the racers I talked to stated they aren't use to the road conditions here. Just because we were the oldest race doesn't mean the racers were obligated to attend. At one time small continuous loops of local races were popular but now long stretches of roadway is now the norm.

Remember they are use to racing in California where most of the riders are from.

The burnt shell of the building has not been taken down, the reason for not having the race last year. That building is more of a danger now. That chainlink fence blocking one lane is not making it safe from collapse.

It is being taken down, but it is slow going because they have to do it one brick at a time so as not to damage the ARC building next door. The back is almost completed because they could use machinery. It is eerie to drive by and see all the black mold on the walls in every apartment. I think the final demo date will be really close to the day the race was supposed to be held because of all the rain days. One entire floor (the top floor) and obviously everything above that are down and they are digging into the next level.

I don't think it's the course that turns the event away. I believe it's the wonderful citizens who spit on them, throw empty bottles at them and then try to steal their bikes.

That does not happen. Why are you stirring up trouble when there is none. I have been a race marshall for a number of years and it has never been seen.

Go AWAY! The canceling of this race is a complete FAILURE!! The organizers FAILED! The city FAILED! No other city would have allowed such a race to be cancelled!

And by the way SHERLOCK! The Johnsonian building course is not what attracts bike riders from around the world! It is the Pearl street hill race!! It is a challenge! The Main street portion was just an extension as the racers were already in the area! The multiple day race along with the challenge was the draw!

There needs to be proper management of the race! The Mayor is obligated to bring other leaders to watch the race and to be involved. Loosing this attraction/event is a complete failure that begins with Mayor Wong!!

How can the city lose such a positive event? Leominster jumped right on the opportunity as the opportunity to host is a good thing for their city. Fitchburg has no thinkers and/or people have just stopped caring and have lost hope! This failure first reflects on the Mayor!

These city leaders are more interested in the FAILING/Anti AMERICAN Chamber of Commerce than they are in the citizens interests! The city CDC is dysfunct under Mayor Wong! All small businesses have boarded their windows! More energy is spent on the University who is not a tax payer than is on Fitchburg citizens and entreprenures! Shame on the POOR performance within!

FAILURE!!!

No. If you don't like Fitchburg or the leaders then move away. Go somewhere that you will be happy. Why live a sad and miserable life here? Leave, move. You bring on your own sadness and depression because you will not leave and go to a place that will will feel happy to be living in. You like doom and gloom and you feel obligated that other people need to feel your sadness and depression too. You do not feel functional or happy and satisfied until you make other people feel sorry for you.

Leave, move away. You don't own a house here so it is very easy for you to find that community where you will be happy and able to live a very fulfilling and productive life. You will no longer be negative towards the community, college, leaders and just about everything because I have never heard you say anything positive about this community. A normal sane person who is so emotionally upset with their community that it affects their personal and professional life would not stay here.

Don't you want to be happy?

Lynch, you have no grasp of what competitive racing is about. Did you see Ed's comments? You cannot force international teams to attend a race. The Johnsonia has zero to do with the race. You understand that the Longsjo is a non-profit organization, don't you? They can only put on an event if there aenough riders to pay for it. Last year the organizers (actually it was Dave Streb) who went in front of the council seeking some funds. The answer by the council was a resounding NO. And you want to blame the mayor?? Really? Get a life.

You are a complete idiot and this comment verifies this. Fitchburg has nothing to do with the race, Fitchburg has done alot for the race since it started 50 years. The city is not responsible for the organization of the race just as Boston is not responsible for the Boston Marathon. You don't know what your talking about. The race was organized by friends and family of Arthur Longjo as a memorial. The city allowed them to use city property as they have done for the last 51 years. The race is financed by corporate sponsors and rider registartions not by taxpayer funds. The city has donated city assests and employees to help with the race. The race was cancelled for many reasons, economics was the main reason. It was switched to a 1 day race from 4 because of lack of corporate donations and sponsors. It was cancelled last year due to the fire and it was to late to find a suitable course that could be approved by the USCF. It was that reason that this years race couldn't attract enough riders. You know nothing about the race or cycling for that matter. The mayor has nothing to do with it being cancelled. You are one stupid f'k. You are the poster child of a "loser"

Hey flip flopper!! So in one sentence the city has nothing to do with the race then in another it gives financial resources. Which is it????

The fact of the matter is "positive image"!!! The race is a much needed positive image for Fitchburg!!! It is the city's leaders responsibility to influence the continuence of this race! It was an event held in Fitchburg for 50 years for a reason! It becomes an event! It has become an event beyond Mr. Longsjo whom the race was named after. It was nationally recognized!!!

There was a concensus amoung all city council canidates that Fitchburgs' image has to be better marketed in order to portray a more positive and welcomming Fitchburg. WHAT HAPPENED??? Surrender???

Should we bother to attempt to market Fitchburg in a better light? Or should we take Mayor Wongs route and raise or oversee every raise in every fee and tax that Fitchburg citizens are burdened with?? Should we NEVER question the Mayor in reference to coruption? Should the "good ole network members" getpasses? Should we question a firefighter who has claimed that the Fay club is a membership that promotes the abuse of power and authority within the FPD and the Fitchburg court system?? Should we investigate???? Or should we allow its continuence and say nothing????

It has come down to the defense who should we go after the drug dealers or the corrupt good ole boys????? REALLY??? So the only defense is an option?? LMAO . We need leadership with teeth!!!!!!

The city has nothing to do with the race because of liability. It is all volunteers. The streets are closed but managed by volunteers. The streets (course) are approved by the USCF. This removes the city and it's workers from liability and any lawsuits.

"How can the city lose such a positive event?"
--Lynch for Mayor

Wong had planned on replacing the Longsjo with a genuine contest to designate a Village Idiot for Fitchburg for the year. Unfortunately, it eventually dawned on Wongo that in so doing she would inadvertantly provide publicity to one of the pretenders for her throne, none other than Dipstick Lynch of "Blue Light" fame.

Maybe people cannot read? THEY DID NOT REGISTER! This may sound stupid but you cannot kidnap the riders and force them to race. Obviously they make out their schedules a year in advance. They just don't decide to race in an event within a week, 2 weeks or even a couple of months.

They just don't want to race here. There are other races being held on the same weekend.

I will repeat myself, YOU ARE A F"N MORON. It is not the job of the city leaders to make sure the race goes on as planned. The race organisizers are all volunteers. The city allows the race organizers to block off streets. The race organizers pay for extra police, fire and EMT personel. The city does not charge the race organizers to use city streets. The city also donates DPW personel to set up barracades, clean the street prior to the race and make repairs if needed. The city has done more than you think to support the race. The race needs a certain number of riders to break even, it wasn't even close, 160 compared to 700 to 800 in the past. Everyone in the cycling community feels bad about the race and they understand why it had to be cancelled. No one is pointing fingers, except you, but your an idiot that is expected. And by the way, the Court in Fitchburg is not run by the city but the state, you have issue with the court go to Boston and file a complaint.
