Tornado season starts early in Georgia

ATLANTA - One person was killed and at least 16 were injured when fierce thunderstorms swept Georgia and Alabama, bringing tornadoes, hail and lightning and downing trees and power lines, authorities said Thursday.

At least three tornadoes touched down in central Georgia when the storms swept through overnight, according to National Weather Service teams who rolled out after daylight to determine if twisters had hit based on the damage. The storms gutted homes, and destroyed a nightclub and damaged schools.

These tornados in Georgia are really scary. Never know when they might just pop out of nowhere. Saw some dark clouds off in the distance and moving toward the farm . Bad weather here outside Atlanta metro . hope we make it through without any severe incidents.

How are you fairing in Georgia with hurricane Ida? We left a few days ago for fear it hits us. Hotels really stick it to you when we get hurricanes because they know everyones evacuating.$110 per night for 5 nights and we do this at least a couple times a year it's ridiculous. There goes the vacation money right out the window.

The whole northeast is getting walloped pretty badly. Richmond Virginia completely flooded. It's a shame.

RICHMOND, Va.— Swollen by rain and pushed by heavy winds, an evening high tide in Hampton Roads produced the worst flooding in coastal Virginia since Hurricane Isabel hit in 2003, the National Weather Service said tonight.

State police, meantime, reported three fatalities linked to the deluge across Virginia. The victims included a Smithfield woman whose children ages 3 and 6 suffered life-threatening injuries an Isle of Wight County crash.

On the coast, the storm added 3 to 5 feet to the normal high tide, said Chris Wamsley, a weather service forecaster in Wakefield said.

“It’s severe flooding, comparable to Isabel,“ Wamsley said.

In terms of storm surge and coastal flooding, this is a historic storm, Wamsley said.

A similar storm surge should come tomorrow morning with the next high tide, he said.

That will cause more problems across southeastern Virginia, where heavy rain flooded streets and highways, made much of Portsmouth and Hampton impassable, shut down the port of Hampton Roads and prompted some residents to seek shelter from their inundated homes.
