Job Corps is worth a second look

Job Corps is a wonderful opportunity for today's young people. Alternative education such as Job Corps is a means for success as indicated in this article. As mentioned, dedication to succeed must still be the participants' first goal as in any situation. I personally know many Job Corps graduates who are very successful including doctors, lawyers, nurses, construction workers, chefs, etc. A GREAT big thank you for this article and wake up call for all those in need of certified education during these poor economic times.

Job Corps is a school for f*ck ups who cannot make it in a real school.

It's better than jail...right?

That is just not true. Yes, years ago some of the kids had been given the choice of job corp or jail. However, it is not that way now. Even when that was the case though those kids deserved a chance. Everyone makes mistakes or so I thought. I know some graduates also that have gone on to very successful careers.

Maybe KellB would like to show us his or her college diploma?
Schools everywhere have kids in them that do not want to learn, and some who just plain learn. Not just job corp. But most kids there want to go and make something of themselves.

Job Corp has always had an excellent program and has proven it's self over and over again over time. So hats off to the students who have attended over the years.

I think that job corps is a great idea

some my family members have been teachers there, i think its great.

What's going on with job corp now? I've heard they've had a lot of changes over the past two years.

my son is currently going to Earl C and he was not in ANY kind of trouble... His football team and teachers and principle etc... at his school at home HATED to see him leave... he choose to attend Job Corp b/c it would give him a future that I could not... He has dyslexia (which we overcame) but the idea of hands on training was def a BIG plus... He has gone from being a B-C student to straight A's and LOVES the hands on... Yea there are kids that do bad things - but that was the case at his school at home also... The hardest part is getting him to go back after being at home and seeing all his friends/family b/c KY is a 14 hour drive... and he loves and misses his family/friends and we love and miss him...

PS his school at home was a private school... and there were still kids doing drugs and having sex and stealing and cheating and fighting and beating up people... bottom line in todays world that is anywhere you go... and really even in the old days that was there if you wanted to participate (which thank God my son NEVER choose to do) job corps offers a work at your own pace with NO pressure to finish when everyone else is done... it offers hands on experiance and training doing something you love - want to do... which is not what most high schools offer now a days... yes my son has some friends at job corps that don't have a desirable home life and job corps allows them to stay on campus during breaks... it offers so much to so many different types of youth... but the bottom line is if you want to work hard and finish what you started it offers you a future without welfare and were you CAN support a family - just like the article said...

I don't have my degree, yet.
Job Corp in East KY.. the Carl D. Perkins one is awful. I would never send my child there. I know this from experience.

KellB, have you been there? Experienced it? Anything? There are kids everywhere who are going to do drugs and have sex. Its a fact of life.THAT IS IN EVERY school so now please tell me what is so wrong there that is not going on anywhere else?

OH my brother taught at job corp and i can imagine he can tell me horror stories, just none that are not happening in every other school in america.

My problem with these types of programs is that an upper middle class white kid will never get a chance to go there. I know this through my experience with the Laborers union. They'll never "qualify".How bout we stop rewarding people who, for the most part, choose to underachieve and start rewarding the ones who work hard and try to achieve.

im not saying we should reward ones who choose to underachieve. however i know kids sometimes screw up and people do deserve a second chance. if they ever do get in job corp im in no way saying if they go in and screw up and not work that they should be rewarded, matter fact they should be kicked out on their kiesters quick.

but its not just upper middle class white kids its upper middle class any race kids who cant get in.

I was the oddball, never been arrested, never been into drugs, just happened to qualify due to income.

While I do agree anyone should be able to go... but I am offended b/c it sounds like you are saying that if you "qualify" to attend you choose to be an underachiever? Some people are not "middle class" b/c of the hand life deals... not by choice... my husband died young and left me with three kids to raise on my own... yea I could have had a better career but I choose to focus on my family and be at home at night not working overtime so I could advance on the ol ladder... I guess I did choose to be an underachiever after all huh - but I have 3 GREAT kids who have NEVER been in trouble and all made good grades my baby is 17 almost 18 and I have NO grandchildren... They are all seeking further education then marriage then kids... but you know maybe if more people choose their family over the paycheck we would have less children in trouble... and frankly ALL those other co-workers of mine who choose to NOT be an underachiever (you know the middle class ones) have grandchildren (not that their kids are married), drop outs, kids strung out on drugs (or in re-hab)or kids working on their 2nd divorce... So, I take it back I'm not offended that you think I "choose" to be an underachiever I'm offended that the world we live in today sees it as being an underachiever... the value system today is more about what you have then who you are... Which hey - I guess we agree you should be rewarded according to who you are not what you have...
