Is Garden City Racist?

Looking to relocate to Garden City, but I have heard there is alot of racism there. Is there any truth to this. I am Hispanis/White.

SW Kansas will be a HUGE shock if you are coming from MN. I would make sure to visit the town before deciding to move there!

The people here are great, but like another poster said, the geography is much different that further east, even than eastern Kansas, so that could be pretty shocking. Like all towns, you find all kinds here, but as a community, it's very open.

garden city is a great place to live. garden city is the same as every other small city in America, its going to have that 10% of negative things you are thinking of. If your thinking of moving to garden city. the only thing i can caution you on that is truly honest is the smell, the good thing about that is. you get used to it in about 2 weeks. other then that, your good. i also recommend putting your children into the private schools. although slightly more costly, they tend to end up doing a little better in highschool/college. P.S i attended public schools. so dont freak out bloggers. its the truth.

About thirteen years ago in Junior High School I experienced a lot of racism. The some students at KH were claiming white supremist.Now that I"m grown I don't here of many people who are racist. They could have gotten used to Garden City's multi-cultural scene or they just keep it to themselves.

You ask a question about Racism in a town that is predominately hispanic with a huge population of illegal Mexican immigrants that flourish openly amoung the whole community. If you are of hispanic descent and speak spanish you will have no trouble acclimating here and will be quite accepted BUT if you are of another race and do not speak spanish you will experience several forms of racism in many places from shopping to eating to trying to get service to trying to find employment. If you have children definitely check out the educational system here. Why are so many parents homeschooling in this community or moving out to smaller rural communites than Garden City. Check out the place before you buy into it.

you will have no problem in gc ks because as the post by beenthere says if you dont speak spanish there is a lot of racism. the cops are very racest against whites

Avoid SW Kansas and look into Hays if you are considering the region.

Garden City is most certainly racist! I am fed up with it. I relocated to Garden City from Chicago because Tyson Foods came to Chicago to recruit and boy am I sorry I ever did. The Tyson plant in Holcomb Kansas is nothing more than a REFUGEE LABOR CAMP for immigrants of all nationalities. They treat those people really bad. I am African-American and we are only 1 percent in Garden City. After only to months of working at Tyson, I quit. Well I have been looking for work in Garden City for over a month and I can't find a job. And it isn't becuase I don't have marketable skills and I'm not educated. I have four years of college under my belt. Garden City doesn't hire African-Americans fo REAL jobs. They will however give us a a job at a work camp where they allow the exploitation of illegal immigrants coming from not only Mexico, but Somalia, Vietnamese, and God know where else. Now you tell me why is Garden City only 1 percent African-American?

I'm not a guy I'm a female. And I agree with you...someone needs to really point out what's going on in this dead end to no where place. But you know how it goes, whenever some one black speaks up and states waht is obvious, we are always accused of pulling out the race card...but hell i don't give a rat's AZZ about what pople think. Garden City Kansas puts me in the mind of DENNY'S...and we all know how DENNY'S was discriminating about hiring and even servicing blacks. As I recall, they were eventaully sued. Just take a lok around GC ans all you see is mostly whites and hispanics working in the resturants, the mall area, the hopitals, the library, the downtown area such as Finney County jobs. Hell, GC doesn't have any black bus drivers for The City Link buses, and GC only has one damn cab in the whole freaking town and the drivers are white! There are no black business owners here and most of the balcks that are here were bused down here By Tyson only to be introduced to slavery in the hell hole work camp! If the freakin locals don't want to work at Tyson why do they think blacks from other states do? As I said, I'm fed up. I need real diversity. Not a few specks of brown faces here and there. This is 2008. For Pete's sakes! Garden City Should be about inclusion instead of exclusion. The only inclusion they are allowing as I stated are the migration of brown faces from Somalia. I guess they make up their quota of the "token" black! Waht a joke!

You know after reading several of these threads I cant help but think this doesnt sound like the Garden City Truman Capote described at all...
However I suspect he would have found the notion of a Gay Black Pygmy running around Garden City hilarious.

I have lived here for the last 9 years and am hispanic. Aside from the occasional racist (which I'v eonly encountered twice in my 9 years) it is a great place to live. I recommend it.

yes it is, only place i have been able to find a job is at tyson -_-
was born in the us, gradded from high school, never been in trouble with the law, no kids, and no job :/
moving back to my hometown soon i hope. its full of criminals,drugs,hookers, and dirty cops. i'll see what job i can find there.

Sad that the only job you can find is at Tyson. Even though your hometown has all the ill of perhaps a big city, you'll probably have better luck finding a job than waiting around Garden City for work. As I said before why is this town only one percent African-American? I was born in the US and am college educated, never been in trouble with the law, don't so drugs, drink or smoke, have a great personality, love to meet all types of people, wasn't raised to be racist, have biracial nieces and nephews, was once married to a Mexican-American, and yes, not all Hispanics come from Mexico, some of them were born and raised in the US as well. Garden city is the epitome of a rural small and narrowed minded town that is not in touch with the rest of the world. This town acts like it is scared to hire Blacks and they are so behind the times it is almost funny, if it wasn't sad.

Maybe if you spent less time whinning and camplaining and placed your energies in a more positive light, Maybe you would be able to not only get a job, maybe keep a job... Employers look for Positive people who are willing and I stress willing to work and not just show up for a paycheck they think is owed them. They want people who are well dressed and well spoken and who will represent their business in a Positive manner. Garden City, Kansas is very racist. If you look at the town as a whole, you don't see any African-Americans working in any positions of substance. there are no black police men, no black mail men, no blacks working in any of the downtown offices, no blacks working for City Link (Fit) transportation, no blacks working at Saint Catherine Hospitals, no blacks working in the court systems as judges, lawyers, no blacks teachers educators, at any of the public schools, and certainly no African-Americans working in the community college. Garden City is made up of 65 percent Hispanics and they are expects by the whites to only work housekeeping jobs or work at Tyson. Garden City saves all its decent paying jobs for the whites in the town. They don't expect minorities to aspire to any decent paying jobs. Garden city also exploits a lot of immigrants and has a segregated town of Somalians, Vietnamese and illegal immigrants that work at Tyson so hell, yes, Garden City Kansas is racist! I know because I am a college educated black woman and can't find a decent paying job in Garden City!
