I will try to respond to this article - the other one about the sinkhole is not working today.
First I would like to thank the Current Argus for printing articles about this situation. Second thank you Mike Reynolds for writing a very good article on this problem. I also appreciate the website on the fire departments web site. It has several good articles posted on it. I would like to see the Current Argus write something daily concerning this sink hole. Even if it is just a seismograph report that would be much better than nothing. Human interest stories would also be nice. I would love to know how the feed store people are handling all this - what about the people that work at Western Commerce Bank - how would that be to look out the drive through window and watch that area all day??? What plans are the irrigation district making to reroute the canal? They could take a survey at a local restaurant and see how many people even know about the sink hole and what they are thinking about it - tons of possibilities for stories. I am so concerned about the safety of people traveling over the area. Are the schools in contact with anyone concerning the school busses? I think another route should be taken for busses. I would contact the bus companies and ask them if they are still using that intersection if I had children. My family does not travel over that area now, it is unhandy, but feels much safer. The signs warning of possible sinkholes are insufficient I believe - it makes you think there is the possibility of a sinkhole in the area, but we KNOW there is a sinkhole - I think the signs should say "Warning - you are about to travel over a huge sinkhole". If the road was painted a warning color there would be no doubt for people that they were in the high risk area. I went to the Emergency Management website and did not find anything concerning the sinkhole. There were links to being prepared for tornados / floods / pandemics etc...but, nothing about the sinkhole - in my opinion Carlsbad's biggest threat! Joel Arnwine, please consider updating the website with information concerning how the people will be notified. Will sirens go off in the area if the sensors detect something (do we still have sensors since they pulled the funds to monitor)? How big of an area will be evacuated? Remember, there is an elementary school in the area....no one will want their children in the area if that is falling in during school hours. How would that be handled? What about the two fuel companies - think of the huge problems that would arise if they drop in with underground water contamination. Does anyone know for sure if either company is in the problem area? My biggest concern with reading the front page article was the following sentence: "Due to financial constraints, seismology readings were not taken on the south side of the canal, and thus it is unknown how far south the well cavity or the surrounding formation damage extends". That tells me they do not know how big this thing is. How many other directions did they not survey due to money constraints? Knowledge is power, not knowing is much worse than knowing what is going on and then making educated decisions about whether you want to be in the area or not. Please city officials keep us informed and make plans to keep the people safe. |

Oh yes they should! At least half, in fact! You sound like old Irby last night on the news. He should be very ashamed and embarrassed by what he said on the news report. Neither of you are kidding anyone, so do not bother with your ignorance and arrogance. I & W should have immediately ceased using their second well instead of being FORCED to do so. But I guess money spoke far louder than safety or doing the right thing. The Irby's care for no one but themselves. They are greedy and quite arrogant. Not to mention, IGNORANT. You really do sound just like him...hmmmmmmmmm. Oh and FYI - it is shouldn't, not shpouldnt. Yourselves, not your selves. And going, not goin. Since, you are nit-picking on others misspellings. And I am still laughing at the complete and utter ignorance of both of your and Irby's statements of, "if the well would have collapsed, it would have done so already"... |

Why doesn't everyone pay? The City must have made money off of them some how? The county? The state? What about any insurance policies they may have? Do they even need insurance for this kinda thing? I personally don't think they should pay for it all, maybe a fraction of it. If they followed state regulations, then why should they have to pay for the whole hole. Besides, what about the businesses that are affected? Was that brine well there before they put up? Should they also pay if they arrived after the well? Even though they didn't mean for this to happen, they are also in danger and should help pay for something they are ALL WORRIED ABOUT. How many other brine wells are there that this could happen too. Should it not have been allowed so close to the city? When was the well started? I think there are alot of questions to be asked BEFORE anyone throws the blame. Besides we all use oil so we are all at fault for creating a demand are we not. And what business owner isn't in it to make money? What person goes to work and not want to get paid? Would you like to be forced to not make money and not pay your workers or bills? Money in the pocket I feel doesn't have much grounds here because WE ALL NEED MONEY. That is why we all work and continue to work. Only when it doesn't affect our own pockets do we want someone else to pay. Why not ask for donations to pay for more surveys? How many people use those roads? I think 5 or 10 dollars from everyone in the city could pay to get something done. Quit complaining and DO SOMETHING.

I AGREE. but dident some people say that CB was getting 5 cents of every gallon of gas we use? bring that money out lets put it to good use. and yes if they took $10 off of every one in eddy county to help fix it you got my vote. any thing is better than doing nothing. |

I AGREE. in part with you on every thing. exept the gas we use. we have all paid for it already. like i said before i will give my money away to try to fix things. but if we do we expect to see action let also CB put the 5CENTS they take from every gallon of gas we have used for yrs to work. |

Yeah, now that I read it, the gas thing is pretty stupid. Thanks for calling that out to me. I take it back but stand by everything else.

YES cuz he is the one that made the problem and made the money. and you LIZ can help since you are the only smart person in Carlsbad and know every thing. |
|||
Testing as long ago as 2001 showed the wells to be a danger, I&W only took action when forced to by the state. Two wells that are at similar depths and are of similar age have already collapsed within months of each other. |
