Not feasible to fire everyone at the same time. There should be a system for evaluating job performance. Give them a warning and time to improve, (a list of specific duties or job description would be helpful) then if they don't improve then let them go. Also when hiring for a job, make sure the people who get hired have a probationary period to see if they work out. But train the people you hire or hire people who already have experience and good skills. Favoritism is a common practice in this town.

After reading all these blogs, I think now is the time to get rid of the left over’s of Scott Vinson and one of the made up position that Sutherland did without the Commissioners approval they are as follows: Rhegann Vaughn who has 3 DWI’s, two of them that were swept under the rug. Linda Smerkoski who was hired as an Economic Development Director, who was employed at the City under the Mimbres Valley Authority grant, where for 10 years did nothing to improve the community. The only thing she did was collaborate with the County to bring in the Learning Center, and was not a sufficient part of that project. Next, Kathryn Smyer, who by name only got that position, when she was the Director of the Regional Transit Center never showed up to work, stayed home and made her assistant do all the work, people said that they would pass by her house and her car was there every day, but she collected a full pay-check, not to mention, she was one of old Scotty Boys mistresses, who undoubtedly helped her get this job…people don’t know but Sutherland and Vinson were tight, and old Scotty Boy pulled the strings. And last but not least, Claudia Pena who has been so called directing the Healthy Start Program and still doesn’t know what the program is about, much less her budget. Her budget had to be explained to her during a Commissioner’s meeting because she was clueless to what her budget entailed.
If all these people are not terminated immediately, this County will never change. These people have a way of talking the talk but not walking the walk, Now start with the others mentioned above, one blog mentioned that Diaz couldn’t terminate Pena because he is her Godfather, well to me that is nepotism through and through!
And you Commissioner’s (Diaz), you better do the right thing and hire a person that is knowledgeable, honest and with a lot of integrity in County government and not hire a female so you can get into her pants! You (Diaz), are a sick, pot smoking dog!
I see, then it's not just a Good Ole Boys Network in Deming, it's a Good Ole Boys and Girls Network......interesting !!! It sure sounds like we need a huge vacuum cleaner to pick up all the dirt, dust and debris doesn't it ?

When is the next county commissioners meeting going to be held? Wonder if there will be a full house in attendance?

I hope Mr. Sutherland was not let go because of the results of the survey, because the survey covered many areas in the community, not just the county. All areas were rated as having deficiencies. The least that the commissioners could have done was to wait and see what Mr. Sutherland was going to do next to try to correct these deficiencies. In reality the results really showed that there is dissatisfaction with our leaders, and that would include the county commissioners, city councilmen and school board members. The next elections should prove how unhappy we are with the current leadership. If not then we deserve what we get.

John I am sorry that this has happened. You came into this community and did everything you could to reverse the previous managers mistakes. You were honest, held employees accountable and tried to do your job. Unfortunatley for you, three county commissioners, with no experience, in elected positions, decided to become county mangers themselves. All three commissioners should be recalled for their stupidity. Please know that you and Connie were a light in the beacon after 16 years of bullshit from the previous manager. I wish you the best. Now on another note, Chairman Javier Diaz, Jay Spivey, Joe "OLEO" (who the fuck nicknames their kid OLEO) Milo all of you are a disappointment to Luna County. I think you three should start packing your bags.
Three thumbs up for a job well done. Why are you so concerned about Commissioner, Joe Milo, Jr's nickname? Not that you deserve to know, nor is it your business or related to county buiness, but so that you won't waste anymore time worrying about insignificant issues; Since you are so concerned, you should go talk to the Deming Headlight. They might be able to inform you as to why the f--- they named him OLEO!

Mr. Watson was publisher at the time and he wrote an article on OLEO's nickname.

You are the one who is the disappointment to Luna County. Maybe you should be the one to start packing your bags!
Thanks

That's nice that you had dinner and shared your findings with John. Care to share them here?

While I was in town the first week of July I meet Mr. Sutherland and he seemed very pleasant and knowledgeable. I am difficult at best to impress but he did make a good first impression with me. In speaking with quite a few locals he seemed reasonably well liked but the Commissioners were a very different story.
On a different note, I spoke with House Speaker John Boehner about issues that were mentioned to me on a different thread some time back about problems at the CBP check point on I-10. I gave John my findings on 10 July after supper. He assured me that he would put someone on the job as soon as he get’s a chance. My guess is, that will not happen any sooner than sometime this fall.

On a different note let me express my congratulations to the person or persons responsible for updating the Luna County website. I have seen much needed improvements and attempts to improve this website. So thank you for listening. It is much more helpful, interesting and user friendly than before. I see progress being made, and that makes me very happy if even just a website. I would like to say that I definitely like the Commissioners web page link under the tab heading Government Dept. It really tells what the roles, duties and responsibilities of the commissioners is. I think it would help if they took the time to read this every once in a while to remind them who they are there to serve. Sometimes progress comes slow and maybe that's why we get frustrated at times. But thank you and keep up the good work.

Ooops. I almost forgot to also congratulate the Luna County Chamber of Commerce website also. Seen more improvements especially in the events calendar. Hopefully more will take advantage of these websites. Keep moving forward.

Why does Luna County have the problems it does? Who is responsible? Who is blocking whatever changes need to be implemented to improve conditions in Luna County? What and who needs to be added or eliminated? Will anyone brought in, who is an outsider and qualified, ever be given freedom to make changes? Or are the problems and obstacles that affect Luna County left in place year after year because it shows the true mentality of a community that CAN'T do any better?

Not at this point. With the likely hood that there are CBP officers or their friends watching these board postings it was agreed that the details would be protected for the time. I will say, I found some of the claims to be exacerbated but most were on the money. Keep in mind too I was only there for a week with a rep from the driller who will be doing my well. I think with the big money crunch on some changes may be inline.
Thanks

I wouldn’t hold my breath thinking that Congress is going to make any significant changes regarding the CBP check stations. In fact many in Congress support the misguided attempt at addressing Illegal Immigration, just as many support the building of a fence under the same guise. These permanent check stations are quite costly, both in fixtures and manpower, and sever little deterrence for the Smuggling Organizations whose route they may sit. Next visit you have with your friend ask him to close the sucker down, and put the money and manpower to better use.

Posted here: http://www.lunacountynm.us/ Next meeting on the calendar it August 11th. I say that because they've been known to schedule special sessions without much notice.

Generally speaking, Commission meetings are held the 2nd Thursday of the month.

I tend to agree. Hard to believe that the smugglers and other illegal activity hasn't figured a way around these hugely expensive check points. Weigh the number of legal vehicles passing through against the number of illegal activities stopped there. I wouldn't ask to eliminate them, but the amount of $'s and resources spent on them should not be increased. They should be looked at as a passive deterrant only. Finding smuggled drugs/people is only one side of the equation. Ferreting out the folks who are procuring and using the illegal drugs/people needs at least equal attention.

I had no idea the 3 commissioners, Milo, Diaz and Spivey, had the authority to oust Mr. Sutherland. Are they the same ones that ousted Mr. Williams also ? Who's the big boss over these 3 commissioners or do they even have a superior they have to answer to ? If someone didn't like what one or all commissioners do, who has the authority to fire them ? Just curious.
