If a dog can't even be trusted when on a chain, it need to be in a cage or better yet, should be put down. We have enough danger in our communities without people having "pets" that kill.

navarre2022,

Dogs on chains are not pets. They are tortured captives.

When are people going to get it? A chained dog, no matter what the breed, is like a loaded weapon. Deprived of human attention, interaction, socialization, and bored and lonely chained for years on end, they become more likely to bite.If you are going to get a dog, DO NOT chain it up. Make it a part of your family so senseless tragic accidents like this won't happen again.

This is just one of the many reasons why chaining dogs is such a bad thing to do. It's too bad that the sheer ignorance of these owners resulted in the death of a precious child.

First, I am not blaming the child. But I am not going to blame the dog either.

How can a 2 year old wander away from a house!

Second, when is this country going to learn that a chained, ostracized dog is not a socialized dog and is very protective of their small space! When a chained dog feels threatened they cannot run, they fight.

I hope this dog is not put to sleep. I hope he is placed in a loving home where he can be part of the family. And I hope the owners of this dog are charged.

Perhaps instead of banning certain breeds, this community should ban certain owners. And especially ban chaining!

Are you kidding me!?!? Blame the dog!?!? How about the babysitter that cant do the job! A dog, in its own yard, on chain( which in itself is inhumane) was protecting its territory and probably itself. It is not the dogs fault its owner never socialized it or kept it chained up. Please, don;t be so quick to blame an animal when humans cause the majority of the problems.!

There should be one heck of an investagation done on this. Where was the babysitter were was the mother and father. What were they doing that they did not know the 2 year old was wandering around a busy street. All sounds fishy to me prolly drugs involved some where.

Back in August my 7 year old niece was attacked by a pitbull in Monticello,Ar. My prayers go out to the family that lost their child. I also believe that all pitbulls should be banned because you never know when they are going to attack someone

First of all, to David, I am very sorry to those people whose children have ever been bitten, attacked, or fatally wounded by ANY breed of dog. No matter what the circumstances, any time you lose a child it is devastating.
I used to live in West Memphis/Marion, AR and worked at the vet's office there. For years there was a Rottweiler chained up beside the office, NEVER getting any positive attention from the mean drunk that owned him. One day he was taken to a home in Proctor where the owner was living. At that home, the chained, angry, and unsocial dog killed the guys's girlfriend's 3 year old daughter. It was such a HORRIBLE thing. And I remember how the papers and police blamed it on the breed of the dog NEVER once investigating why that dog did that.(http://www.igorilla.com/gorilla/animal/1999/r... ) But at that moment my passion for chained dogs was ignited because I never wanted to see a bond with a child and dog be broken so tragically again.
Now I live in New Mexico and am apart of a national organization called Dogs Deserve Better (www.dogsdeservebetter.org ). Instead of sitting around and wishing things would change, I am inspiring change. Our city commissioners are voting on a tethering ordinance that is going to be so tough that most people aren't going to be able to chain their dogs.
So please, don't just sit there. This is the time to stand up for this child and for the chained dog. Without us speaking up for both of them UNITED this will continue to happen across our country and for me, that is NOT acceptable.

It is so sad that a child was killed because the people that were suppose to be protecting him, for what ever reason failed. It is a tragedy that somethink like this can happen.

Get off the ALL PITBULLS SHALL DIE WAGON. Its sad the child died, but on the other hand, the child was not being watched, OBVIOUSLY. You cant blame this on a dog that was chained, IN HIS YARD, IN HIS DOGHOUSE!!!!!!! I do own pitbulls, never once has one of ours ever tried to bite, or even shown any aggression. Im not saying they cant or wont, you have to be a strong willed person to own this breed. You cant just have a pitbull and never show it love or affection. and no, ours are not chained up. They are in the house and sleep with us everynight..

there are times when you don't have a choice. I had a dog that could climb a fence. My neighbor has a dog that always digs under the fence.
