I'm sure "He was just turning his life around" when he started to murder people. I am glad he did not come back, because then he would of been living in your house, and murdering people in Minnesota. You might want to check on what your "own" children are up to as you are a VERY bad judge of people.

i am not a bad judge of people/ i know what my own kids r up to thank you/ if you dont know sam dont judge him ok/ you dont know my kids so please dont say things about thim / maybe you r not a nice person/ thank you/ LW

Before Samuel John Dieteman became a suspect in a nationally known shooting spree, he'd been arrested for things as petty as theft and property damage. Along with shoplifting. Driving while drunk. Marijuana possession. Assault. Failing to appear in court. The list includes 37 encounters with police — and that's in Mankato, Minn., alone.
The 30-year-old tried to leave his troubles behind by moving to Arizona in his early 20s, said Melissa Dieteman, a half-sister who lives in nearby Crystal Lake, Minn. Melissa's father visited Samuel Dieteman in October and saw that his son had a job at a bar. The younger Dieteman gave the impression that he had moved beyond a stage in his life marred by drug abuse and physical violence, Melissa said.

"He must have put on a good show," Melissa Dieteman said Friday after hearing of her brother's arrest.
Samuel Dieteman married a girl he dated in high school in Minnesota and they had at least one child, Melissa said.

They divorced after moving to Phoenix. Court records show he has owed $1,382 in child support since March 2002.

Dieteman wasn't close to his family, by his own choice. His father, Scott Dieteman, traveled to Arizona for his son's birthday in October but Melissa Dieteman said her brother made it difficult for family to keep in touch.

"I think he thought my dad didn't love him," Melissa Dieteman said. "My dad cares about him."

The 22-year-old Melissa last saw Samuel Dieteman in December 1997. A few years later, she wanted her brother to come to Minnesota for her high school graduation. He didn't go.
Dieteman's criminal past includes disorderly conduct, drunken driving and check forgery while he lived in south central Minnesota for most of the 1990s. One home was in Mankato, a city of 31,000. The other was just to the north, St. Peter, a town of 9,700 that boasts being the home of five former Minnesota governors.

In Arizona, he was convicted of shoplifting in Glendale earlier this year. He failed to pay a fine and has had a warrant for his arrest since May 17".

samuel john dieteman was close to his mother she was the one that took care of him / i never knew sam to speak of his dad but i guess he talked about him to my kids because they grew up like brothers sam stayed at my home i never had any trouble with him he was a happy kid that loves his mother very much so he got into petty crime most kids do that dont make him a killer i will never beleave sam did that he was in the wrong place at the wrong time/ i dont understand how he can be charge with it /and what about the walmart story just because he was in there maybe he was just shopping that dont make him a fire starter /louise west st peter minnesota

I am also named Melissa Dieteman, how ever I am not directly related to the Minnesota Dietemans. I am fascinated to learn that a Dieteman was a serial shootest in Arizona and that the man's sister is of my same name! Can anyone offer more info on this family? Thanks.

Hey Louis, I know you and your sons. From awhile back. I also know Sam it is very hard to belive that he would do such a thing. That is not the Sam I know. The Sam I knew was happy joking around. Just having a good time. I wanted better for Sam than all of this. This just sucks. My prayers go out to his family and child and all that has been effected by this. God bless

hey louise it's me agian. Your very welcome. I pray for Sam also. I miss him being around also. I wish he could come back. Sometimes I just lye awake at night just thinking of him and the times we had shared together. I am so torn. My heart is broken. I wished he never left. I wish whatever happened in phenniox never happened. It is a night mare for me. I cared for and I loved Sam alot with all my heart. I wished better for him. If people don't want to believe this or not this is not the Sam I knew. He made me feel safe and loved. i just can't believe this is happening. I am so numb and saddened by this whole thing. I wish I could talk with him. I want him to know that my heart gose out to him and I think of him often. God Bless until next time.

i know that some of the stories i was told was told by the person on the other end of his rage, but since i was also there during some of the things this man has done, ive know him since he was 17 and trust me i wish i didn't think he could do this but i feel he is capable of it and would not doubt he had an active role in this. was looking to hear where the trial for him was at. for his girls i hope this gets settled soon. sorry mary if your reading this.

louise west is my mother and i knew sam growing up, he was my brothers' best friend. everyone of us got into some trouble when we were growing up and i agree that getting into trouble doesn't make you a murderer unless of course you don't change your life around before you sink to that level. i for one can't sit back and say that same absolutely did not do these things and if my mother could be honest with herself, neither can she say that with certainty. every human being is capable of murder, it's as old as cain and abel. Jesus Christ said that men's hearts are deceitfully wicked. unless a person is living their life fully devoted to Christ, then they are capable of all kinds of evil. i wish sam wouldn't have done these things but there is still hope for his soul if he will repent and follow Christ.

It is sweet you think defending this man and his family is really doing any good. But honestly Louise, you have NO right to tell people what they should or should not write. This is a public forum for peoples "opinions" and they can say anything they please whether you agree with it or not.

It is clear you have known this man for a very long time, however, you are obviously in denial as you think he is incapable of these crimes. In one post you say the other person influenced him... are you serious? He is a grown man and looks and sounds to me like he was NO innocent man what so ever with all of the crimes he has been convicted of. Just because he was sweet around you and possibly a happy person who loved his mother in no way means he is not capable of murder.

In my "opinion", he needs to remain in jail for eternity just based on the previous number of charges he has had. America has enough criminals running around and getting cut lose on a daily basis, I say keep this one while you have him and don't let him go. His kids can still visit him in jail.

And as for your comments on his family not needing anymore grief or not needing to read bad things said about their son/family member. Well, they should probably not get on a public forum and read post regarding the crimes their son/family member has been accused of if they don't want to see negative feedback. It is in no way my job nor anyone elses job to hold our thoughts or opinions just because someone "might" read it. His family can not honestly think people see him as innocent or that people in anyway like him for what he has done in the past or may have done this time.
