He raised this squirrel and while it was a wild animal, I am sure he considered it a pet. He was in a tough situation and reacted (whether justified or not) in sparing an animals' life- not causing it intentional cruelty. You do understand that a squirrel is basically a rat !!!! The Hawk on the other hand is an amazing creature with a long history . There is a hawk that nests by Sachem East High School and is a wonder to watch when it is in flight !!!
