Virginia doctor shoots hawk in backyard to save squirrel's life

Full story: Newsday

For a Virginia doctor, squirrels are a man's best friend, too. Thomas Shepler, a hand surgeon, shot a hawk to death in his backyard when he said the bird was eyeing a young squirrel that he and his wife had ...

I can't believe they are charging him with animal cruelty. Would a person not kill another animal to spare the life of their pet. He raised this squirrel and while it was a wild animal, I am sure he considered it a pet. He was in a tough situation and reacted (whether justified or not) in sparing an animals' life- not causing it intentional cruelty. Dr. Sheplar, no need to feel embarrassed, your intention was to save a living creature that you raised since a very young age.

I can understand this mans actions. I have raised baby squirrels. I wouldn't have stood by and watched it catch a squirrel I had hand raised either. Good luck Dr. Shepler. It is a rare person who does as much as you do for animals and people. You don't deserve to be tangled up in the courts.

Good lord! Raise the squirrel in a vacuum tube if you want to protect him from hawks. Squirrels in the backyard have a life expectancy of less than a year. Why? Cause things eat them!

So the good doctor shoots a threatened species which is more vital to a healthy ecosystem than a squirrel.

Get a Chia-Pet, doc. It's safer for the rest of the biospere!

Your remark about relative value of hawks and squirrels reminds me of the history of Yellowstone.

The man should be charged with a lot more than animal cruelty. Hawks are federally protected, and the bird was only doing what GOD and nature intended it to do. Squirrels are supposed to be eaten. They aren't pets.

Can't have it both ways. Is it HIS property or the hawks'? Why can he not defend himself and his property from invaders, regardless of species? We spray for termites and to rid ourselves of ants, so how does the government get to decide which lives and which dies? As mentioned above, their history of doing this succesfully is putrid.

Squirrels are food for hawks, which is as nature intended. Squirrels are also rodents, and can be very destructive (ever have one in your attic?). The hawk was only doing what it instinctively does, which is hunt. Sorry, doc, but you were wrong.

I back the doctor, squirrels have many preditors. At least there is one other person in this world that cares for squirrels. In the begining god made animals for man's companion, human race sinned which messed up this whole world.I have squirrels that I care about and have been feeding for about 7 years they have never caused me any problems now I haved a neighbor that is trapping and killing the mothers squirrels and the babies are left to die. That is evil. He should go to jail.

I agree. The attic/destructive thing is so true. I want to Bitch*Slap those who think they are doing a good thing by 'adopting' or 'protecting' these very plentiful rodents. Cute? Yeah, sometimes, but they are not pets; buy a clue.

They are not friggin' endangered in any way at all and you can't swing a dead one by the tail without hitting another one in the head.

Long Island's shelters are bursting at the seams with cats and dogs awaiting adoption. The feral cat issue is huge, especially in Brookhaven town. Stories of people giving up their pets because of the economy are plentiful.

And this guy shot a hawk for the love of a g*d/damned rat with a furry tail? Ugh. Senseless, abjectly stupid and obtuse.

That's exactly why they're endangered, man has shot them for years and poisoned their prey. I'm for the hawk...the doctor should be heavily fined.

Daily Horoscope for December 22

Gemini

If you're currently keeping something secret it will really start to prey on your mind today and you'll worry about blurting it out at the wrong moment. It's one of those days in which you're absent-minded and completely wrapped up in your own thoughts. As a result, it will be hard to concentrate on anything else and this won't go down well in certain quarters.
