Chip -

Like I said, I try to avoid "Timber Hill" so it has been a while since I have gone up that way but my best guess is 3-4 miles between T.H. and Beartown. Timber Hill is not steep or exposed it is just very rough. You will be driving over boulders while trying not to drop a wheel in between the big rocks. I hope you have a good 4x4 and or a winch because it is a long way to call a wrecker (Creede) if you get stuck.

Please let me know what you think of "Timber Hill" when you get back. Also bring me back a chunk of sylvanite!

Just a bit of history for you - Timber Hill was the choice location of many robbers in the day. It was rough and slow going even 100 years ago and the bad guys took advantage of this situation to practice their trade.

Good Luck!

Chip-
First off, sylvanite is a VERY rare high grade ore that any rock hound would kill for! I will gladly take all you can find!
Alferd Packer killed and ate five democrats in Hinsdale County approx. 4 miles south of Lake City at the base of Slumgullion pass. If you go to Lake City from Creede, you will drive right past the "Massacre Site".(There is a large sign on Colo. Hwy. 149 across from the state highway barn)
When are you going on your trip? I will be in Lake City around the first week of Oct. to hunt elk.

When you return from your Colorado hunt, please tell me how your hunt went and what did you think of "Timber Hill". Is it still nasty?

Waiting to hear ......

got talked out of riding animals to beartown. couple of people said it was too far plus we had a horse acting up on us. we went to weiminuche pass instead. big mistake. too many hunters. did see some bulls but couldn't get any cows close. next year i'm gonna go over at beartown. people we talked to said timber hill was bad.

Sorry you did not get your cow. I will be trying for my cow Oct 17 in area 66.
Next year you might try getting to Beartown via Stoney Pass. From Silverton you go up the Engineer Pass road taking a right at Cunningham Gulch. I would suggest you make a dry run without the horse trailer just to see what the road is like. Stoney Pass may be too rough for a trailer but it is still better than Timber Hill!
