Federal Trade Commission and states crack down on 'robocallers"...

Full story: South Florida Sun-Sentinel

The phone rings. You answer and a recorded message says: "Your car's factory warranty is about to expire!" Millions of consumers have gotten similar calls by companies wanting to sell what trade officials say are questionable auto warranties.

These types of annoyances only become important when it happens to someone in power. I've been getting those calls, even though I'm on the 'do not call' list, for the past two years. One call to an attorney general and bam! a law goes into effect immediately.
Those 'do not call.gov ' lists are as useless as the United Nations.

you are absolutely right ... i've been on the lists for years and it doesn't seem to have made much of a difference ... car warranties, satellite tv and carpetcleaning seem to be the worst, most repetitive offenders

Caller ID is great!! If I don't know the number that's calling, I don't answer the phone. Let the call go the the answering machine and they can leave a message. They usually don't. Same goes for bill collectors.

Go to the “do not call website”, if you have caller ID, and you can make out a complaint. Do it every time you get a telemarketing call. Tell the telemarketer they called a business and you are forbidden to take non-business related calls. Tell the telemarketer to take your number off their list. Hang up without listening to what they have to say. Buy the call selector service from your local telephone company. You get a chance to deny the call if the number is blocked. I seldom get telemarketing calls, not like before doing all the above.

Why anybody would purchase a "service contract" from a telemarketing company is beyond me. Most of the time they turn out to be worthless as they don't cover you when you need it the most. Most weasel out of the contract by pointing to the clause that says you must have your car serviced using the schedule published in your owners manual. Even the slightest violation will render the contract invalid. For example, if you don't have receipts or can prove that you had the oil changed every 3000 miles, they void the contract.

One more thing, a company by the name of US Fidelis advertises heavily on TV. When you have time, Google "US FIDELIS SCAM" and see how many hits you get. The BBB rates them "F".

It is about time. Next they should go after the numbers that do not identify the callers. They say they are to collect a debt. They ask you to call a number and enter a code. What idiot would call an unidentified number and enter strange information? You might end up paying for a call to China!

That's the best thing to do, if enough people start canceling their home phones maybe the phone company take some proactive steps to stop telemarketing calls from reaching and pissing off their customers.

let all calls go to answering machine with a message like "leave a short message" beep and then you get to listen to who is calling and you dont need caller id because everyone you want to call you knows to start talking! We dont need more laws just common sense

Caller ID all by itself is really a SCAM as are most phone options. You are paying extra money to view information(data)that arrives with the call anyway. Drop the landline phone as it's a waste of money.

I guess I got lucky. I kept getting calls from a number I couldn't call back so I finally listened to the message and got the number at the end of the message and called them back. And when I asked the women to lose my number and don't call again she just said "OK", and they didn't.

"I thought it was a lifetime guaranttee", I am sure we all at one time or another have fallen for good words or intentions, maybe I am wrong on a lot of points, but it is about time our government has[this administration] has recognized and dealt with problems ignored by other adminitrations and authorities.
