If the Sargent was driving a dept. issued Geo, things would be different.

A two-vehicle collision Tuesday evening north of Nine Mile Falls killed one man and injured six others, including a Spokane Police Department sergeant on his way home from work.

The crash occurred at 7:55 p.m. on State Route 291 between Nine Mile Falls and Swenson Road, according to Washington State Police.

A 2001 red Chevy minivan driven by 40-year-old Anneke Lewis was northbound when it crossed the centerline, colliding with a southbound 2002 Dodge Durango, according to the collision report.

The crash killed Lewis' passenger, 45-year-old Kevin L. Lewis.

Anneke Lewis and three children, ages 13, 11 and 9, were injured and transported to Sacred Heart Medical Center.

The Durango was driven by Spokane Police Sgt. Joe Peterson, who supervises the department's major crimes unit, police spokeswoman Officer Jennifer DeRuwe said.

WSP trooper Jeff Sevigney said the head-on collision blocked the highway for some time. All six people involved were wearing seatbelts.

"So far the cause is weather related," Sevigney said. "I haven't heard of any other contributing factors."

A passenger with Peterson, 28-year-old Jenny Stabile, was injured, but the collision report does not indicate whether she was transported to a hospital.

DeRuwe said Peterson was off duty driving his department issued Durango.

"I talked to Joe this morning. He's at work. But that doesn't mean anything, Joe is super human," DeRuwe said. "Physically he is probably OK. I don't know about anything else."
