As far as what has been called a school board. Its just an extension of the scheme. Let the homeowners "think" they have a voice in the schools, squeak, squeak, squeak as in three blind mice, or is it 25,000 blind mice......
For once Newsday has hit the button and the truth comes out. The lawyers hired as consultants apply for employee status...and get it. Its the good old boy and girl network. We will all be bankrupt in time...in time..... |

Your right, there is nothing that can be done.

Thanks to the school tax we are all doomed. Just read the articles in Newsday on the poorly managed operation and financial oversight.
Its a disgrace. The articles always note, "we corrected that" or "we are putting that in place". I wonder how difficult it is to even get the school districts to open the books for review. I bet its next to or as close to getting a warrant. We need government intervention. Not a secret organization of appointees and appointed. Lets send the taxpayers to a paid convention in Hawaii to figure this out for the holidays.... |

Its very likely the governor will insist on merging the entire school system. How Long Island ended up in such a deplorable state reflects the poor oversight on the entire educational system. The former State superintendent was clueless to the point he didnt even know where Long Island was. He only read about in the newspapers and decided to vacate his position so another empty suit could take his place.
The only real venue for follow up is through Andrew Coumo. Its sad, a disgrace and just another racket as in extortion, payola and patronage. I am not proud of the Long Island school system, its corrupt big time and no one over sees it. The card carrying members would use taxpayers money to launch a smear campaign against anyone who wants to clean the mess up. A far as the school boards, Moe, Larry and Curley would fit the role fine. They are left out of the most important topics and even the hiring and replacement of staff. So what are these dummies doing sitting there month after month for? |

Taxpayers elect the school board.
School Board hires Superintendents. Superintendents hire everyone else. |

AOL |
Well, you are about 33% correct. School Board are not capable of hiring a superintendent. Its done by the elite educators of long island school systems.
The New York State school Superintendent, a politcal appointee is suppose to oversee these guys. Sadly, instead of coming to any meetings because its to far away from Albany, and they cant mind everyones business....they appoint so called high ranking long island school employees to attend and provide a small note on the meetings agenda. In most part these notes get tossed with the empty coffee grinds at the end of the day. Why, not enough homeowners are fed up and dont email Albany nor call nor write letters. Perfect example is the ROSYLN SCHOOL DISTRICT.....Oh Dear

The very last on the end of the scope of the operation, the last 5 cents of approval, comes from the school board.
Add to that only one rubber stamp is available and worn out so it is replaced often, the stamp is the stamp of approval. Whether the homeowners want it or not, its approved. How do you get senior citizens and the working jomeowners to participate in the election? Easy, send out the ballots to the homeowners. It wont be done, because it will be to much for so many residents to vote no, since it will be in the mail with the car insurance, the LIFA bill, the cell phone bill and the fuel oil bill. We have no representation from any of our politicans. They are incompetent to make a stand for the people they represent. Why, because most of their campaign funds come frome shell contributors....and the misscellaneous budgets. The school board has not revealed any muscle in the budget of the district as evealed on the astonishing amout of money just little old Deer Park spends yearly.$94,472,441.00. What do you get for that amount...less then 8% of Deer Park children even graduate college with a 4 year degree. What a disgrace for the money invested! The school board is not equiped with the knowledge to understand nor comprehend what line by line budgets mean outside of a monetary number.Do they even ask? This is revealed in the budget sent out yearly which explains absolutely nothing. The category listed as miscellaneous is abused and misused. It is a tony word for various and hides many questionable expenditures. The school board does not even have any State mandated training available from the NYSS's office as to the responsibilities each officer has conducted by a certified member of the Albany staff, and I dont mean local reps either.... How can these people do there job? The top administrators and of course the superintendent in each district is trained to sell, sell, sell. With the outrageous junket conferences held "out of town", only stradegy is tossed around between pina coladas. Hidden in the agenda is how to get water from a stone and even some Dr. Seuss analogies. The school board is just a local group of unexperienced residents who comprise whats called a....lame duck committee. Thank You |

If you follow the post, only 2000 at most people vote and have voted all along. The vote is a total failure and does not represent the community. The same goes across the board for every community across long island. It is corrupt, misaligned and unconstitutional.
How does a population of say 64,000 people where only 2000 vote represent the community as a whole. I hate to say this but your clueless. Please dont respond if you lack any comprehension on this matter. As a matter of fact read Newsdays article on the stealing of money in Rosyln and Shirley. Tell me its not widespread. Tell me hand written fuel vouchers are acceptable and not gas STATION RECEIPTS WITH THE LICENSE PLATE NUMBER AND THE MILEAGE NOTED. The school tax is a mess, and everyone knows it, even Andrew Coumo, DiNapoli and the rest......know its widespread corruption. If they act on it the entire Long Island school districts will be wiped out with the arrest that will follow. How do you resolve it. In act an Inspector General and assign assistant diastrict attorneys to investigate. Hire a forensic auditior. Pass laws to govern the school expenditures. Establish a code of Ethics and disciplinary action. Its time to wake up and realign the taxes with NYC. They are passing us on every aspect of Education and getting all the funding and perks and programs because they are better policed, managed and efficient. Why give Long Island more federal funding when they cant produce one year of records that are correct and don't reveal misappropriation of funds and poor management. Would you invest in this? No.. |

If only 2000 people out 64000 vote than it is what it is.
What have you done to inact an inspector genral? I resove things by doing, not complaining. |

So you want teachers' salaries cut so that the district may give parents money to send their kids to college? Have you ever heard of any other districts doing this? Are you aware that students can apply for scholarships from the colleges they plan on attending as well as a host of other financial aid packages? I have never heard of a district awarding scholarship money of any significance. As for a music teacher getting paid extra for ensembles, you need to educate yourself to how it works, not just here but in ALL districts. Anything above and beyond the school day and the classes the teachers actually teach is extra-curricular, coaching is the same deal, only no one in this town ever complains about athletics now do they? If you have a problem with who coaches what team or extra-curricular activity, take it up with the admins or the BOE, of course that would mean you have to be involved. As for stopping all this "stuff" that costs the district extra money, here's the rub on that, it's the extra "stuff" that helps kids get into colleges, helps kids get those scholarships and such. If we eliminate them, who are we really hurting? Complaining without knowing how things actually work or having a point of reference, ie, how other districts do it, means nothing. As always, education is the key, it is what you make of it, my kids are doing amazingly well, I have no complaints, they will attend college and no I do not expect the district to give me money for that! |

"If you follow the post, only 2000 at most people vote and have voted all along. The vote is a total failure and does not represent the community" Then perhaps the COMMUNITY should get out and vote next May instead of merely launching uneducated and misinformed rants on a Topix board? |

Sorry, your incorrect. The scholarship money doesnt add up to a drop in the bucket. Again, you can have your dead Aunt Rose give $50 dollars every year for a scholarship. In Deer Park, the scholarships 99% dont add up to ONE BOOK. As far as scholarships, you can apply for....what statistics do you have to reveal how great Deer Park students are doing in the scholarship department. You are passing wind here. Teacher salaries, who cares, its the overlapping administrators salaries, school principle that are in schools not even two miles from each other eyc, come on, its consolidation time in America, Long IslND NEEDS TO GET ON BOARD. polester suits dont cut it anymore...I rather launch a rocket for $94,471,000. The whole system is a failure at that cost.

YOU RESOLVE WHAT MAY I ASK ?????
As far as an Inspector General, it is long overdue. Just read the Newspaper about all the corruption going on, its widespread, widespread, all over, the taxpayers know it, the politicans know it. its a big sweetheart club.....with limited membership. Its also the higher you go, an elite well organized group of hunger Vegetarians, the kind that love the green stuff, no pun intended. With only 8% of all of Deer Park students completing college, its a total failure, worthless, empty money pit that needs government intervention ..

If you actually read what I wrote, I questioned whether ANY SCHOOL DISTRICT provides significant college scholarships. How could they and still provide for the education of the district? You complain about taxes now, what would they be if the district needed to raise funds for scholarships? Also, if you cut teacher salaries significantly, who do you think would be teaching our kids? I'll tell you who, those who couldn't get jobs anywhere else and had to take these low paying spots or nothing. Is that what we want? You stay on your constant rants without really addressing the issues or for the most part, really being logical. As I have said before, the system is far from perfect and could benefit from some major restructuring, however the calls to slash teacher pay, eliminate extra-curricular programs and the like are just plain ridiculous. |
