Well, I wasn't there neither was anyone else, so the truth probably lies somewhere in between. However, if the neighbor didn't KNOW his neighbor Mr. Gates, then something is wrong. Why would a neighbor call the police on a neighbor if they know the neighbor?

Next, the police were probably following protocol and procedure making sure -- in that ritzy neighborhood -- that everything was OK. Mr. Gates need not get his dandruff up. If he was on the opposite side (the neighbor's) he would do the same.

Had the cops NOT responded to a man (black or white) breaking into a house, they would have been negligent.

But that they answered the call of a man forcfully entering a private residence makes them racist.

Now that we have an African American president, Rev Al knows that he's become irrelevant.

Message to the African American community: Al Sharpton does not want racial equality. If this were obtained, he would be out of a job.

If you send this moocher money, he will use it to make sure that blacks in America are kept down. This way he has causes to fight.

Keeping America divided and blacks in the ghetto is what he wants. Please don't pay him to do this.

I think this professor acted precisely the way he did towards the cops because he is black.

Most Americans would be grateful for the police quick response to the possible burglary of their home.

Grateful a neighbor called the police after obsrving what appeared to be an abvious forced entry into a house. They would properly identify themselves, expalin how they had been locked out giving a full explanation of their conduct in "breaking into their own home."

But not Henry Louis Gates Jr. This man has no gratitude in his attitude. This man lives his entire life seeing the world through his paranoid delusions thast eveything that happens to him is for only one reason. That he is black.

Well apparently you can give a man a title of professor but that does not mean it makes him any more civilized or intelligent.

What a sad way to spend one's short stay on this planet.

So he didn't want to identify himself while attempting to break down a door?

Sharpton's disappearance from this murder clearly demonstrates that HE is the racist, beyond any shadow of a doubt. How the media and anyone else can afford sharpton any credibility whatsoever is astounding. The media should be ashamed.

I wish the police would arrest Al Sharpton. He is the biggest racist on the face of the earth. Strange how Al Sharpton keeps his mouth shut when a black guy hurts or kills a white cop but has no problem speaking when a black person gets injured or killed as a result of a struggle with police (usually during police pursuit of the black person that just committed a criminal act). Here it Comes...Another CIVIL INJUSTICE because a Black Man refused to listen to a Police Officer investigating a reported break-in. Hey Al, PLEASE go up there and show off your intelligence to the Harvard crowd, we need them to understand what we have to live with here in NYC because you need to fund your BS lifestyle. How does a man with NO JOB afford Armani Suits?

The police didn't enter the situation until the professor was in his own home.
How many of you would be polite when the cops showed up and wouldn't believe that you were the homeowner even after you showed not one but two picture ID's.
Add to the fact that the officer refused to hand out his name and badge number to the homeowner only adds fuel to the outrage.
That he felt compelled to arrest the homeowner shows that he has no ability to defuse a tense situation of the department's own doing.
You know the police were out of line when both the NY Post and the NY Daily News publish headlines of "Racist Cops".

Yes it was wrong, but some blacks hate authority and buck it at every turn. Racist? It always seems to be the case. Are blacks off limits despite the fact they commit alot of crime even to their own?

So the police was responding appropriately to a robbery call, that they are mandated to investigate. They did not know the professor was the owner, In his own statement he did not supply the id's right away but went on to speak to the officer about being black. If he had followed the officers instructions and came out of the house in a calm manner and showed his id right away, this occurrance would not have occurred. The police officer would have investigated the id's and then realized what was going on, but because he prolonged the situation by arguing and calling the officer racist this happened. Police have to follow procedure its how they keep alive in any situation. Don't get me wrong racial profiling is everywhere but sometimes you have to look at the situation

To "Guilty until proven white" when cops come knocking on my door and politely explain that there's been an incident around my house. I cooperated as it was not insulting to show ID. And I feel better that they showed up so quickly. But I guess some just doesn't want the cops to show so that they can claim "racism" or some such. And if they do show, make a big fuss and claim "racism" or some such.

Gates' door is jammed and he can't get inside his home. Neighbor calls police to report possible break-in. Police respond. By the time they arrive, Gates has already gained entry. Police identify themselves and the reason for their presence - they received a report of a possible break-in at the residence. Gates refuses to come out, refuses to identify himself, and immediately whips out the race card.

Hmmmm.. I'm not a cop but if I had to guess, I'd figure these cops grew increasingly suspicious of the man inside the house. Inside the home where a reported break-in possibly occurred, uncooperative.

I guess he should be lucky the cops didn't storm through the door and drag his dumb azz out into the front yard and arrest him.

He should be thankful he was granted the privilege of being a "black man in America".

Hey Guilty until Proven White - you too are racist. If the Police come to your house investigating a report of a break in, you do whatever they say and ask questions later. This numbskull black professor should have been arrested for being uncooperative and disorderly.
