Don't these Indian children have parents, churches, and other organizations on the reservation that are willing to teach them their culture?
If the parents cared they would ensure their children learned what was important. This sounds more like a cash grab. |

This article is ridiculos! The majority of the people interviewd and complaining are all Rob Porte' family members!!! Are they forgetting that miost of them are are half, if not more than half, WHITE!!! One piece of the article was correct...Rob Porter is exaggerating BIG TIME!!!! No one is treated differently in schools here. If you do something wrong in school, no matter what your skin color, you get in trouble.

2 I wish I had good polish roman catholic school to send my kids to. They could learn polish instead of english, learn the polish traditions that died out with my grandmother that so many of us forgot, and learn about our religion. But Nothing wrong with what the Senecas are doing. We need more schools like this. |

I went to SCCS and the ridicule towards INDIANS was terrible. We had to back each other up with support because the WHITES were mean full of HATE. I wish I had a school like this when I was younger and I could send my son to a tribal school today. |

I have a friend that works at Salamanca- and she says a different story. There is alot of racism coming from both sides. We need to teach our children to get along with everyone.

1 They can have their own school, however they are suggesting taxpayers fund it. If indians were serious about their culture they would teach it to their children. |
||||
I also went to SCCS and remember my first day of school riding the "indian bus" and several indians fighting w/ me. I remember playing for the seneca sachems and the indians always wanting to fight me. I remember indians stealing bikes and cars in Irving. I remember quite a number of similar instances, however I was friends with many. The problems ran both ways, but most of the indians that were my friends were not the trouble makers. |

If The Seneca Nation wishes to puruse starting their own school, let them, but do not expect NYS tax payers to pay for it. They do not pay any property taxes, or state income taxes, so let them start collecting taxes from their own tribal members to pay for the school, teachers and counselors.

That's a valid point... Considering the prohibitive costs of a private school I'm sure the boys from Nichols are advising them to go the charter route... The tricky thing is is that given the budget fiasco NYSED really doesn't want any new charters issued, with the exception of NYC.. In fact, 15 new charter schools opened in NY last year, every one was in NYC... Talk is cheap and everything has a price... If the families want to pay out of pocket for a private school, go ahead, its their right...But, I seriously doubt that families on the rez, given the choice, will pony up 15K a year for each of their children's education when they can get a free one down the road.. |

you don't get it do you?
the sni is financially resting upon the tax payers of the united states they get money for homes.( HUD ) they get money for heating ( HEAP ) they get money for home improvement ( HIP ) they get money for women,infants and children ( WIC) they get money for the courts, they get money for the running of the government, they get money for the conservation department, etc., etc., etc., then the have the option of operating a casino tax free, but they have to pay nys 25 percent revenue from the slot machines. but they do not pay any money made from the black jack tables, the carribean stud tables, the 5 card poker tables. so who do you think is going to pay for the new school? that's right the taxpayers of nys and the united states. so dig deep that is going to cost alot of money. |

I went to SCCS as well. There was as much hate and ridicule towards white kids as there was towards native kids. Your statement is a load of crap. The native kids even had their own resource room where only they could go for help. The other kids didn't have a special room, natives only. We had Seneca Culture class every year starting in elementary, with Mr. Printup(RIP). There was also an option to take Seneca language instead of spanish or french, from 7th grade thru 12th. |
