They sure did approve each others property assessments real quick without bothering to verify other values nearby and before an ethics rule could be put in place.

The chairman's lot is over 2 times the size of mine in the same subdivision and valued the same as mine. How can that be justified. I'm not on the river. I'm not on the golf course. I do not have a view. Just a plain old lot.

Are you talking about the Tax Assessor, Mr. Lamb, or the Chairman of the Assessment Committee, Tom Porter?

When will these people learn that the shady deals need to stop. Keep exposing it Randy!

Unfortunatley, nothing will be done about it.

Did you watch the video??? Read the story??? He admits to having his values "fixed" after losing his appeals and there is nothing there? I don't believe the corruption will ever end in Gilmer County

To me, what is more indicative of a problem is that when Randy Bell made a motion to approve an amendment to the Ethics Rules that says that nothing can be done OR discussed regarding the property valuations or tax assessments for anyone associated with the tax assessor's office, everyone just sat there and stared. No one would even second the motion so there could be discussion or then it could be tabled for a future meeting. That is important, NO ONE at that table seconded a change in the Ethics Rules to prevent this from happening in the future. If I had been Tom Porter and had nothing to hide and felt my property had finally been adjusted to where it should be, I would have seconded it in a heartbeat.

That would have shown that he felt confident that nothing should ever be discussed outside of the meetings. He should have then volunteered to let them look at his again publicly if he really felt it was done fairly, just behind the scenes. I just can't believe he has gone to all this trouble to get his tax bill adjusted when he is over 65, so only pays 26% of the tax bill, and has homestead exemption since it's his primary home. I did the calculations and because of his school tax exemption he is only saving $125!!! And he risked his reputation for that?

In the chairman's neighborhood that he says he got lots equalized, one prime golf course lot for sale 1.5 acres assessed at around $9,000.00. Across the street from that lot a 1.5 acre lot not on the golf course assessed at $30,000.00. End of the year. Ethics stalled until Randy Bell is no longer on assessors board. Hold onto your shorts folks. No wonder they can't win a lawsuit against them.

Yeah, hopefully but I doubt that will happen as they both have very different opinions on how the county should be run and after all, JC is responsible for the day to day operations and has shown he's the leader. I gotta say that JC has done a fair job $$$ wise..
