The brush and tree removal work looks good. Just wondering if they are treating those stumps to prevent them from sprouting again. I dont see the blue-green stain that came from the herbicide that is usually used.

Not likely. They will need something to do next year so I figure they will let it all grow back. It does look very good where they have cleaned.

Community service comes to mind. Good way to pay off some of their debt to society.

They call it restorative justice. It's somewhat controversial, because some view it as a double sentencing.

Former Mayor Jeff Foli wrote: They call it restorative justice. It's somewhat controversial, because some view it as a double sentencing. Restorative Justice & Work Release are two different programs; neither are mandatory, nor are either a form of "double sentencing." Restorative Justice is designed to provide offenders an opportunity to give back to society & build a sense of connection with the larger society by developing pro-social attitudes--the ladies have a quilting room where they may make quilts for Children's Mercy; men at WMCC used to make wooden toys (from donated wood) to donate to Children's Mercy & other programs--they once made a lovely doll house that was raffled off to staff to raise funds to make more toys; CCC has gardens that donate produce to area food pantries (WMCC used to, but I saw where the gardens out along the highway are gone). Work Release is a privilege where offenders can earn more than the monthly allotment. They must pass specific criteria to be eligible. It is a great savings for the counties/cities/etc. that participate, since they don't pay anything close to minimum wage. While I don't disagree with the concept of work release, given the current economy & unemployment picture for both teens & unskilled adults, I would prefer the city provide employment for individuals who would be paying taxes & making consumer purchases that contribute to the local economy.
