One employee who started it don't even know if she is Spanish or not but she kept saying out loud she was off the clock. So I guess that gives her the right to chase customers away. Soon as she did what she did and I turned around to look at them the others moved away from her. Guess she was trying either run me off or get them fired.

All because I asked the manager off the cuff if he was going to be hiring more non English speaking employees. I didn't complain about anybody. I didn't try and get anybody fired. I didn't point out who told me they spoke no English when I asked for help.

It had to be the most ignorant behaviour I've seen that I can remember. Completely senseless. This is a retail business. Do these people realize with every $1200 loss per month someone may lose their job?

Actually that employee that said she was off the clock alerted me to the fact that they all knew by what she said afterwards.

Like I said before. For every $1200-$1500 loss per month is somebody's salary.

These employees need retraining. And since they aren't getting it, I'll train them.

You know what I could have cared less if there were a few non-English speaking employees there. I happen to like the Spanish employees except now for some of them after what happened yesterday. What I am mad about is it is now an issue that I even asked the manager that question. Whoever he told shame on them because they just made a chump out of their boss.

Thank you for the information. However, I've already been to the publix website and inquired as to how managers are supposed to handle situations like these and if they are supposed to inform the employees who the person is who asked about it.
Next step. Contact the board of directors. That ought to get some attention from the shareholders.
The Publix shareholders are the associates of the company. Publix is owned by the people who work there.

If you feel uncomfortable around Spanish speaking people, that's your issue, not theirs. You are the one bringing race into it. Unless they are illegals, they are Americans too.

Discuss at your next Klan meeting.

You are absolutly right. Too many Americans are turning minor issuses into a "race thing". I agree with you Neal 100%.

How many English only speaking Americans will start shopping at other grocery stores or big box stores like Super Target when they can't be understood by someone who can't tell them where something is in Publix. It's not a matter of anyone thinking someone is talking about them. It's a matter of not being able to receive assistance without walking around the store until they find someone who speaks english. People just don't have time for that. Too bad Publix doesn't want to address this issue properly. Maybe there is enough revenue from Spanish Americans that they don't need to provide assistance to the English Americans who have kept them in business all these years. The hell with them right? Right.

Thanks for bumping this thread up by the way. That way more people who don't speak spanish can be made aware of what Publix, it's managers and it's employees/shareholders really think about them.

Thanks again.

Thank you too. Hopefully more people will see this thread if it keeps going to the top of the forum and comment on it.

Personally I'd like to hear about the experiences of those who've shopped at their stores for the past 20-30 years only to not be understood when they need help in the store.

This is still America last time I checked.

First of all, the situation you described never happened. In your extreme Republican/Fox "News" paranoia, most of what you think happened actually never did. It's your racism getting in the way. You are so afraid of non-white, non-English speaking people that you can't think straight.

You should be ashamed of yourself for spreading these lies, BUT...as a Christian, I forgive you.

See, that's the problem you have right there. Someone has even the smallest bit of an accent and you turn into a jerk at the store. It's not that they don't understand you. it's just that you behave so badly, they don't want to deal with you and your racism.

I work for Publix in Orlando. Idk how it is in South FL but I went to a Publix in a different part of town and was told the same thing by a stock clerk that he didnt speak english.

As an english only speaking American white guy, a long time ago I used to get upset by that, but I've seen so many more and more latinos move to Orlando that it doesn't bother me and if I need help and a person doesnt speak english I just shrug it off and find somebody who does. I dont bitch to a manager.

Living in a culturally diverse city has made me more open minded and i see people not races

Shame on you for getting all pissy about something so like everybody else said, MINOR!

Hahaha, too bad Publix bought 50% of their stores.

Last time I checked, it was discrimination not to hire someone because of their race or ethnicity.

You make it sound like Publix hiring a non-English speaking person is as bad as the holocaust...

I have never had a hard time finding someone who speaks English at Publix. I am in West Palm Beach also not far from Miami. I think this guy is just racist and impatient. Maybe in ghetto Miami there are non-english stores but thats to be expected down there. Albertsons is crap compared to Publix anyways I would rather shop at winn-dixie than Albertsons.

I feel for you! I remember when the same kind of thing began happening in Miami. It never did improve; in fact, it only got worse. I also remember how many people moved north after Andrew.
It sounds as though this population has reached critical mass, and now feel free to tell you to speak their language. Sad.

Can you tell me why the meat at Publix is 50% more than anyone else? They bought Albertsons so that they would not have any competition but guess what more and more people are finding meats at mom and pop places at half the price. Publix superiority and monopoly will not last forever.

So there.

I say start a boycott or petition requiring corporations to hire people that know English and Spanish. I have no issue with the Hispanic culture as long as they learn the American. If they refuse i say kick them out and revoked all citizenship's that don't speak English!

Daily Horoscope for December 22

Aries

Financial muddles are more than likely today so be careful if you're going shopping. You might be accidentally short-changed or there could be a misunderstanding about how much something costs. This isn't a good day to lend friends anything valuable in case they don't return it or they damage it in some way. Better safe than sorry.
