After I thought further, I realized this is stupid anyway.

What parent in their right mind would make their 12 or 13 year old retake a class they received a B in, just in case it might harm them 4-5 years from now from being valedictorian? Don't put that onto your middle schooler.

Even getting a B is a lot of work in these classes. It has been said if a child gets a B in the honors middle school classes, it is akin to getting an A in the same, non-honors high school classes.

On the flip side, how can we tell a student who worked their butt off throughout high school that they are not valedictorian because they got a B in 7th grade, and the student who beats them out got an A because they took the same course in 9th grade instead of 7th grade?

[QUOTE
So, if a senior gets a 5.25 GPA taking all average classes, they should be valedictorian over a senior who gets a 5.24 GPA taking honors courses?[/QUOTE]

"Average" classes are based on a 4.0 scale. Not 6.0. Honors are based on 5.0 and AP 6.0.
No student taking only 'average' classes would graduate with a 5.25 GPA.

its not fair that the person who gets the A gets gypped if the other person that gets a b winds up getting the same points as the A.

I hate some parents. they are idiots.

Read it again. The student has to re-take the course that he/she is dropping the grade in. This is basically for the students to be able to say, "I tried it, didn't do as well as I had hoped, and would like to re-take the class." Why is that such a problem? We are talking about 11-14 year olds.
For those of you for your nice comments that my child must not be doing too well for me to comment, my child got a B+ all 4 marking periods.
I don't have to read it again. It's called grade forgiveness and it's addressed in state law (see s. 1003.428, F.S.]. The law already allows middle school students who tried it and didn't do as well as they had hoped (grade of F, D, or C) to retake it.

The issue here is retaking when the student receives a grade of "B." A "B" as most of us recall equates to "good" or "above average progress.

...a student in the middle grades who takes any high school course for high school credit and earns a grade of "C," "D," or "F" or the equivalent of a grade of "C," "D," or "F." In such case, the district forgiveness policy must allow the replacement of the grade with a grade of "C" or higher, or the equivalent of a grade of "C" or higher, earned subsequently in the same or comparable course (s. 1003.428).

If all these brats are so smart, then why is our school system a joke? What ever happened to taking higher level classes to become more educated.

Lets see... if I take a harder class and Earn a "B", I might not be valedictorian. I guess I should take the easy class to be given an "A". Thanks all you over educated morons in control of our schools, I will take the easy way!!!

The point I was trying to make is 7th grade Algebra I is much more difficult than 9th grade Algebra I. Why? It's the same class. The tests and coursework should have the same degree of difficulty. I'm not saying the 7th graders should have it easier, but why do they have it harder?
I only agree to the student dropping the class and retaking it for a higher grade if they do it the very next semester. Not decide to retake it 3 years from now.

Then if your 7th grader isn't up to the task of 9th grade algebra, then let him wait until 9th grade to take it.

.....and if that's the case then maybe your wonderchild isn't as smart as you think he is - or - maybe quit trying to push the poor kid and let him progress at his speed.

But for you to push your kid and then want a "do-over" cause the kid didn't cut it is absurd and as another poster suggested, hardly fair to the kid who makes an A first time.

So in other words, they are being encourages to falsify what they are actually earning and therefore achieve a status they really haven't achieved. GREAT! Teach corruption early!

I wasn't addressing you to read it again. That was my answer to someone who thought the grade could just be dropped without retaking the course.

I have a 7th grader with all A's except for a C in GEM Algebra I. She has 2 D's and 4 F's on the class quiz. The teacher won't instruct sufficiently because she says "U had this in Pre-Algebra" Most kids can't finish the quizes and many grades are very poor. Our kids should not be experimented on, all they need is true education that will ready them for college. All involved with the "FCAT" should be charged with a gross attempt to cause our kids to fail. Education is given to teach, it should not be tricky questions trying to cause failure.

Daily Horoscope for December 29

Sagittarius

It's difficult to keep your mind on what you're doing today because it keeps wandering off in all directions. There won't be much you can do about this except to be aware of it, and preferably to postpone doing anything very complicated or important until you're less distracted and absent-minded. Unfortunately, you won't get very far with it at the moment.
