Former workers at university won't give up the fight

Full story: South Florida Sun-Sentinel

A year ago, 108 low-paid janitors and maintenance workers at Nova Southeastern University in Davie lost their jobs when the school switched contractors after a contentious union drive.

Essentially they weren't worth more than 8 bucks an hour.

Wages would he higher if we didn't have so many illegals driving wages down.

But thats not a story the Sentinel covers

No worries mate, in Obama Nation this horrible situation will be reversed.

The workers will control the situation and be able to demand huge raises. In fact in Obama Nation they will be able to choose the curriculum, and who can teach it.

The light will shine so pure on Obama Nation that the world will know that once again we are the chosen people.

And exactly why is this the university's fault? They weren't employees of NSU.

I applaud NSU's decision to replace UNICCO, a Massachusetts-based contractor, with local (and perhaps minority) businesses.

Perhaps if the folks that are still umemployed put as much time and effort into beating this "dead horse" they would have found a job by now.

In immigrant-rich South Florida, there's a steady supply of workers willing to take these low-paying jobs. These workers just learned what globalization really means. They are easily replaced by someone in the vast pool of cheap labor just south of the border. Blame lax enforcement of immigration laws for the plight of wokers in low-paying service jobs in South Florida.

I was one of the workers from Nova that lost their job. I had a good job at Nova and was happy, but when I saw how the workers were being treated and how small their paychecks were I had to get involved and try to help. I exercised my right, as an American, to organize. Feeling that these people needed someone to stand up for them, I put my job on the line for them and ultimately lost it. If I had to do it all over again I would do the same, at least I stood up for what I believe in.

The American dream is getting harder and harder to achieve in this country and when we allow employers to stomp on workers rights, what does that say about us as a community. Better wages mean better local economy, employers providing health insurance means less expense to the taxpayer.

Statistics have shown that where unions are strong crime is lower, more children graduate from school, local economies are better, people are more healthy. Isn't that what we want for our communities?

I attended the rally yesterday and was amazed that the workers still want to fight, their spirit is inspiring and the fight will go on.

When the National Labor relations Board finally makes it decision in regards to the complaints we have filed against Nova and their contractors, justice will prevail and all of the critics will see that what happened to me and my co-workers was wrong.

One of the posters says "Why exactly is it the universities fault"? Well, I believe that the university instructed the contractors to not hire all of the leaders in the Union drive. Proof of that is an internal memo I have from WorkForce One advertising openings for the very jobs we were fired from, on the same day we lost our jobs. If Nova was cutting back because of budget concerns, that would be one thing, but to blantently fire workers for organizing is a disgrace to Nova as an institution of higher education and our community.

Broward County is the biggest Democratic County in the Southwestern United States. Democrats have historically been labor friendly and have supported unions. I believe that is one of the good things about democratic beliefs.

Being from Massachusetts, which is also very democratic, if this happened there, there would be outrage. Where's the outrage, where's the support? Where are our Democratic leaders? Do they not truely believe in democratic values? Or do they just think it isn't important because it doesn't affect them.

We were outside of the Broward Governmental building and not one Commissioners showed up. I know that there was a Broward Legislative Delegation meeting in Fort Lauderdale at this time and they couldn't send a representative, but they didn't. But I know they had no problem in 2006, when they were running for office to ask me and my co-workers to stand on a street corner and hold a sign up for them, or stand at the polls during the primaries and elction day and hold up a sign for them.

I am a true believer in actions speak louder than words, I think my actions have proven this. In closing I would like to call on all Broward politicians to do the same, verbally you have supported us, but verbally is not enough, if you are true Democrats and believe in Democrats core values then you will stand up for your fellow human being when their rights are being stomped on. You will stand side by side with your fellow brother or sister when they are hurting and struggling. To me, that is what makes a good politician, someone that isn't afraid to stand up for the underdog, stand up for the poor, stand up for the rights of their constituents.

Ray Ferraro is a skunk lawyer at heart, but what else is new? These people should go get union jobs, if that's what they want. Let other fools work for minimum wage at Nova, never a clean place anyway.

Dear Former Nova Worker,

Exercising your right as an American to organize a workers Union is certainly admirable. However, when you reside in a right to work state, reality does not take long to smack you in the face!

Donna, and many other people like her, are some of the last remaining vestiges of good and honorable people holding this country together. Even with that being said, a non-union person can walk into that institution today, apply for a job, receive it, and refuse to join the union. It is most likely that upon her retirement, the picture will again turn ugly soon after her absence.

Exploiting an infinitely available supply of undocumented, non-speaking English immigrants from extremely poverty-stricken nations, is a gold mine for labor brokers like unscrupulous janitorial contractors and the crop growers. Actually, it is a panacea for American businesses’ currently on the brink of bankruptcy.

Essentially, they operate within an environment, condoned by wealthy businesses’ which are owned by billionaire's (plantation and sports team owners) and institutions in a quasi-slavery manner. It is currently one of the four major issues in the coming Presidential election. Iraq, economy, healthcare, and illegal immigration share an even par with education.

For decades, the past and future decision makers of this country will continue to profit by slavery, as long as they continue to keep the attention off themselves by changing the cover of the book!

Its content never changes! For now you must leave Florida, and emancipate yourself!

This is another case of a South Florida Union that has no idea what it is doing. Having a rally at this location was stupidity. Much like UNITE-HERE Local 355, another incompetent union led by a croooked idiot named Andy Balash, who was removed from office for stealing union dues money for personal use but kept in office by corrupt union president John Wilhelm, this union led the workers into the abyss with poor planning, lack of knowledge, refusal to play hardball from the beginning, and stupid stunts like this one that did not affect the university at all. Just like we have thousands of hotels & restaurants opening every day paying poverty wages while crooks like Balash live the high life off union dues payers while he refuses to organize anything becuase it creates actual "work" he does not want to do, janitors and service workers are left without the ability to negotiate with strength because of incompetent, corrupt union leadership.

You are naive to believe that the Democratic Party will come to your defense. The Democratic Party long ago become a tool of big business and Corporate America. Democrats will not come to your defense, they support a globalized work force with their policies of open borders and uncontrolled immigration. I'm a former Democratic activist who became sickened by the pro-business and anti-labor policies of that party. Union members need to wake up to the reality that the Democratic Party doesn't doesn't represent their interests.

Really, Ms Ruiz, there's not a whole lot of thought process in cleaning a toilet (matter of fact, the less the better). There are hundreds arriving in Florida every day willing to take your job at minimum wage. So time to move on and find another job, the one at NSU is long gone.
Look on the bright side, the tomatoes are in season.

Unfortunately, the Sun-Sentinel's track record on endorsing Al Capellini for mayor went on too long, including the last election. It took pretty much all his $80,000 campaign funds and some pretty nasty tactics, especially in Century Village, to beat his opponent seeking office for the first time. Hopefully the voters will look for new direction this time in a candidate that supports a code of ethics, has some political science education, business sense, and experience in the political arena. Donald Cleveland seems to fit the bill, even though the Sun-Sentinel hasn't endorsed him. Our city doesn't need to stay mired in the past with candidates from the past, but rather it needs to choose a different path that embraces respectability and accountability at City Hall.

Corrupt Capellini needs to stay out of public office for good. In fact, all of the Deerfield Beach Commissioners need to be voted out of office. The City of Deerfield Beach never ran smoother than the days when Jean Robb was Mayor. She has kept her hand on the pulse of Deerfield and knows what changes need to be made.
