HeraldNet: Drivers may see a lot more roundabouts in Snohomish County

More and more roundabouts are being built in Snohomish County, the state and the nation as alternatives to traffic signals and stop signs. Studies show they cut down on the severity and frequency of accidents, keep traffic flowing, reduce air pollution, save gasoline and are easier and cheaper to maintain.

"They move cars much more efficiently," said Mike Swires, a state Department of Transportation traffic engineer in Olympia.

I live in an area that had a roundabout installed on one of the busier intersections, and I have to say that it has made that location much safer. Cars no longer have to wait to turn left across a heavy flow of traffic, and cars don't get backed up any longer.

My biggest fear is drivers that aren't competent to understand and navigate through them, but they are a danger no matter what!

And I would declare that you are very likely correct in your assertion.

If anything, traffic lights AND signs are all the more the 'solution.'

Playing games with traffic circles (roundabouts) is patently ridiculous.

In Europe the roundabout is a normal thing. The only ones having difficulty with them are the visiting Americans who have never taken the time to learn the rules.

So, Duke, are you saying that Americans are dumb?

I think they work much better than traffic signals. Although...I was on the one in front of the Casino Friday and a fellow was going in the wrong direction. That's the 3rd time I've witnessed that on that particular round-a-bout.
