strange story

What a strange story by Monica Potts. Ms. Potts writes, "The likely nominee of the Democratic Party for president speaks often about reaching across party lines and finding common ground. Barack Obama is right," he said.
"Shays added that bipartisanship was part of his DNA, as well as the presumptive GOP presidential nominee, U.S. Sen. John McCain."
Yet while praising Obama, Shays is sticking with partisanship: he's backing McCain this year. The past two elections he hewed to his party line as well, supporting far-right candidate George Bush twice. Curious that Ms. Potts didn't point out that discrepancy.
The hypocrisy just drips from Mr. Shays' words. While Shays has repeatedly told us he supports setting a fixed timeline for withdrawal, he supports John McCain, who has steadfastly maintained that he will not set a timeline, which, says McCain, would lead to "chaos". Why didn't Ms. Potts point out that glaring discrepancy?
Ms. Potts also quotes a boy as saying he's "dismayed that other teenagers are not involved in politics or aware of issues." He continues, "I think they're too busy playing with iPods and text messaging." Too bad Ms. Potts didn't point out to him and her readers that voting among young people is skyrocketing this year, and that young people are signing up as Democrats in overwhelming numbers. Ted, young people like you are very aware. That's why they are voting in huge numbers for Barack Obama.
Chris Shays' "inconvenient truths"? Let's start with his blatant hypcrisy in telling voters in 2006 that he "has a plan to bring our troops home", and that he "is more anti-war" than Diane Farrell, because he was in favor of timelines, then turning around once re-elected and voting five times- yes, five times!- against precisely the timelines for withdrawal that he told the voters just a few short weeks before that he supported. Perhaps when Ms. Potts interviews Mr. Shays again, she will ask him how he could have told voters that he favored a timeline for withdrawal, and that most of our troops could be withdrawn within 2007 (Washington Post, August 25, 2006), then turned around and voted in February to support Bush's escalation of the war by sending 20,000 more troops to Iraq (Roll Call Vote #99).
Perhaps Ms. Potts can ask Mr. Shays how he can say that "bi-partisanship is part of his DNA", but call the ultra-right-wing House speaker Newt Gingrich his "hero", and the viciously partisan conservative leader Tom DeLay "a great majority leader". Perhaps she could also ask Mr. Shays how he could have supported Roy Blunt for Republican majority leader, a man so conservative that he was rated a "zero" on his legislative record by the Brady Campaign Against Gun Violence, the American Association of University Women, and the League of Conservation Voters.
At some point reporters in this district need to wake up and start reporting the truth: that Chris Shays is no moderate and no maverick, but a right-wing partisan who supports his neocon Bush administration buddies whenever his vote really counts.

To Strange Story....I'll bet you are so left wing and one sided that you would never vote for a Republican. You don't know the meaning of bi-partisan. I don't belong to either party and find it refreshing that Chris Shays votes for the people and not his party. None of them in Washington should be voting party lines after an election. It's all about working for the people. Party lines should be eliminated.
