No symmpathy for bikes who ride on streets. Stay in bike lanes, yield to cars and pedestrians. Bikes should be lowest on rank of importance. Period. Sorry for his family, but he was probably not showing good judgement.
My sympathies also to the driver of the car who must now live with this tragedy that he did not create.

for the family of the victim im a truely sorry for your loss.. but i do argeee on this one.. MOST bicyclist do not follow the rules of the road they are suppose to yield to pedestrians as well as stay in their own lanes & use hand signals & actually STOP for red lights. i find it amusing that they consider bikes to be just like car but then again they do not follow the rules & regulations & when they get hit its blamed more on the person driving a vehile because it could have cause more serious injurys when in fact (in most cases) the driver of the vehicle was following directions & the bicyclist either ran a light, isn't in his or her lane, or didn't use correct hand signals. if you riding a bike JUST be careful, ride whereever you want but be cautious & know YOU ARE NOT THE ONLY ONES ON THE DAMN ROAD.=)

Unfortunately, you are both completely off base on this one. Although there are certainly cyclists who 'violate' rules of the road, as do 'most' motorists, in this case, you simply do not know the facts. This was a cyclist training for a triathlon riding 'LEGALLY' and appropriately and was brutally 'Run Over' from behind by a motorist who was clearly in the wrong, as she would have been had he been in a car instead of on his bike. Motorists are LEGALLY OBLIGATED to give space to cyclists, or any other slow moving vehicle on the shoulder. This particular rider, whom I happen to know, did not break any rules, and was senselessly killed by a motorist, for reasons we do not fully understand. There were no stoplights, etc., to violate in this case, just a nice man cycling legally on the shoulder of a nice stretch of blacktop. I too am sorry the injured motorist will have to live with this tragedy, as will the cyclist's widow and children.

Please do not make posts on a topic you do not understand.

Thank you.

I'm a cyclist who recently came back to the SF Bay Area after having lived for a couple of years in Dallas, Texas. When I first moved to Dallas, I remember having a lot of trepidation about riding my road bike in the country just east of Dallas, and in the city of Dallas itself. I had many preconceived notions in my head about how those "Redneck Texans" would treat me as a cyclist. As it turns out, I had absolutely no cause for concern, because invariably I was treated with great respect by drivers who actually seemed to be concerned about my safety on the roads. Drivers would typically give me a lot of room when passing, or they would even slow down behind me if a car happened to be approaching from the front. This was the most pleasant surprise.

I'm a native Californian. I love this state. However, what I don't love are the selfish, inattentive, and brazen drivers one finds so commonly--especially in the Bay Area. This is truly one of the most beautiful places on the planet. It is too bad that this fact is lost on so many of the drivers here; people for whom it is such a mortal affront to slow down and show some courtesy and respect once in a while.

if you read correctly they said MOST cyclist which is TRUE so i suggest you read through and understand someones opinion before you choose to say anything, the topic is clearly understood and these people are sorry for their loss, they are just stating a simple yet very true fact that BICYCLIST & MOTORCYCLIST TEND to not follow the rules. which they dont

for you drivers with no sympathy (and no you don't have any you're only kidding yourself on that one) you will probably injur or kill someone someday because you are obviously the drivers out there who think the rest of the world is in your way.
Then we can all feel that same sympathy for you when you sit in jail. I hope she gets manslaughter and goes to jail.

Because bicyclists have to share the road with cars, let's have the state issue bicyclist's licenses just like driver's licenses.

Bicyclists who drive on the wrong side of the road and run through red lights should be fined. Bicyclists who drive while intoxicated should be fined and have their licenses revoked.

The state can collect license fees to help its budget problems. Some of the fees and the fines can go towards creating more bicycle lanes, make existing one safer, and educating drivers about bicyclists.

I almost hit a bicyclist a few weeks back. He was going to cross a very busy intersection as I was turning right. I was looking left as I came to a complete stop. I looke right, then left again as I began to excel. I saw the red hand for pedestrians (although I had just looked)..For some reason he was coming very fast on his bike and going to cross just as I was excellerating, he never slowed, nor was he intending to stop and look before crossing this intersection with the red hand lit telling him no. He saw me just as I saw him. We both put on the brakes at the same time. He flew over the handlebars of his bike as the bike came over on top of him. I stopped an inch or less from him (thought his bike was going to land on my hood).. I was horrified and pissed.. he could have changed my life forever!! He wasn't even going to slow down and I never saw him..I would have run right over him!!! I don't know the facts here..My heart to all the families involved. I do know that it scares me that bikers ride on such narrow backroads with lots of curves and it scares me when cars speed down Tassajara..Both issues should be addressed...the speeders and the bicyclists on narrow streets with no shoulder or bike lane...too dangerous for everybody!! God Bless

I just watched a man bicycle across a busy street without looking. He had a child in the back, and he was busy yapping on his cell phone. He never looked left or right and never paid attention to the traffic. I guess his cell phone conversation was more important to him that his and his child's lives. He was lucky this time that no car had struck him. I don't know about next time.

You're feeling conciliatory and compassionate today, and you're ready to bury the hatchet if you've been at odds with someone recently. You may have to make the first move, and risk getting a brush off, but you'll consider that a small price to pay if it means you're able to restore the peace. The relief you feel will tell you how much this has been preying on your mind.
