i know good and well I would not attempt to teach any ages of children that I could not punish if needed. i think that is what the problem in school is now. some students need a good paddling. But being as the teachers can't do it that is why the students try running over the teachers.

I went to school in Tennessee and I tell you what, we had the fear put into us about that damn paddle. I think that our school was a better place for it. Kids were polite to their teachers and fellow students. We didn't have the fear of going to school and getting shot by a fellow student. We were brought up right and knew what the consiquences (sp) were if me messed up.
I think every school should paddle students, it tought me to be a better student and not skip out of class and be respectful to my teachers and friends. I wouldn't trade it for the world.
On a side note though, the licks hurt like hell!!!! One time was enough!! Thank goodness I didn't get into a lot of trouble because I sure did fear that paddle.

I am current a behavior mod teacher in a middle school. I am shocked by the behavior I see in the schools. These kids of today have no respect for teachers or fellow students. Teachers are called every name you can think of, and we have no way to discipline them. If you try, they laugh. I think the almighty paddle needs to be reinstated so teachers can teach. Oh, the paddle is for the students and their parents, who failed to teach their kids reapect!!!

paddling is still 100% LEGAL in Tennessee schools. children can be paddled as long as the parents have not signed a do not paddle form. if you do it right and not injure the child, then it is highly effective. i am a new teacher and i paddle and i would have to say it is quite effective.

...and spoil the child. We adopted a 3 yr old a few years ago. She did fine until school started and she saw the little tricks the other kids were using to get away with things. In just 2 months she is no longer the child I happily sent to school to learn socialization after 3 yrs of us homeschooling her and teaching her to read and write prior to 1st grade.

We felt she needed this time to acclimate to a stable home life after a life of never knowing where she would spend the night or if she would get to eat a meal.

She began to lie to us for no reason, taking 4 to 5 times of asking her to tell the truth before she would finally say "Ok, I'll tell you the truth now". Why not the first time? I don't want others spanking her, but we do only if standing in the corner, time outs, taking of fav toys and losing tv, movie time doesn't work.

I don't know what else to do with her. I think it's related to her bio moms drug use during pregnancy. She is a bright child who is eager to learn, loves school, but we just are beside ourselves.

I demand respect! I will continue to spank at home, in a store, wherever she needs one, but I do not trust that a teacher will do so without harming my child due to my own bad experience.

When I was a 3rd grader my teacher broke my hip from the one & only spanking I was EVER given in school. She used a wooden paddle with holes in it, quite thick too. At the time we did not know she was suffering from a mental breakdown until weeks after wards when she was caught having a meltdown screaming and crying in class!

I spent an entire year in bed being homeschooled so I could avoid hip surgery. Then on crutches and walked with a cane until I was in 7th grade because of this woman. Yes, we filed a lawsuit against her & she was fired eventually and the school did pay my medical bills. But no one can make up for the lost year or the pain I still have at age 50 because of the one spanking I got at school.

I agree parents need to take a firm hand and teach their children respect for elders, suffer the consequences of their actions, and be taught the right way to act in all social situations. Perhaps when she is older I may feel different, but at this time I & her father will be the ones to spank.

Teachers, I agree you should have the right to spank a student as a last resort. I feel you must do what is best for the entire class. One child cannot set the tone for the others. I don't know why, but my child is an angel in class according to her teacher. She just tries out her tricks once she is home. What has changed? Anyone have any advice for us? We don't want to be mean, just keep the respect we have taught her all along. What else can we do?

Obviously you are making false assumption. There was no hidden innuendo in my post. I merely found it funny to read about a teacher who paddles in "severe ville". Does that help you understand?

Well my son was paddled, without my knowledge, after I'd had a conference with the administators asking them never to. I wasn't informed there was a form, and my son responded, even according to the assistant principal, to being pushed by pushing a boy back. They both got "two licks". I have a real problem with a school system not allowing me the opportunity to discipline my child before they take a paddle to him. He was the only child in his class last week to even make the honor roll, and two days later was paddled. It's ignorant to teach kids not to hit by hitting them. If I went in and hit the woman who hit him, it's called assault, and if I hit my son at home with anything other than my hand (using an instument) it is also against the law. It just doesn't make much sense...

I made the honor roll almost every six weeks I was in school.

I also got paddled about every six weeks, well maybe more often, because I talk too much.

It didn't hurt me, and I still talk too much.

It won't hurt your child either.

Paddling and hitting is not the same. Hitting is balling up your fist and hitting someone.

Never know, some adults like to be paddled, or so I've been told.

Two licks isn't going to scar anyone for life, believe me. I'm a normal person, never been in trouble, etc. etc. LOL. I wish I had a dollar for every lick I got in school.(with a paddle that is)

As I was saying, I went and talked to the administrators at the school BEFORE this, and told them I handle discipline problems in my home, telling them NOT to paddle him. There apparently is a form, which I STILL haven't been offered, but I'm moving my son, so it's no matter. Balling up your fist and a person whom I've only spoken two one time, in an office setting hitting my child with a wooden paddle aren't that different.

I know he won't be hurt, it's that they didn't notify me first.

That woman probably would NOT like it if I decided to paddle her, this is a really small town and people would talk about her and tarnish her "reputation" at church.

I'm glad you turned out ok, it's the principle that they hit my child without notifying me, AFTER I told them not to, without having been offered a form to not allow them to. I did not KNOW there was a form, and I guess that's my fault, I should have asked for one.

I remember the first time I got "licks" I told the principal that my daddy didn't even hit me that hard and he said" well maybe he should start"
and proceeded to smack the crap out of me.
To this day I will never forget that.
I still believe that licks are a GREAT thing.
Like I said previously, it taught me to have a great deal of respect for others.
side note: When I told me dad what the principal said, he laughed and agreed with the principal :)
That's the way a parent should react! Respect the teachers that are trying to teach your kids. No wonder kids now adays don't give a crap about anyone but them selves. Sad, very sad.

If you feel like my child is disrespectful or you can judge how I discipline my children, or what kind of people we are from my posting about this, you didn't get as much out of your paddlings are you'd like to think, perhaps.

I only have a PROBLEM with asking the school NOT to paddle him, and them doing it two weeks later, not having offered me the paperwork to decline the discipline from the school, returned my phone calls, etc. My son got shoved and he shoved back. That is what he has been taught to do, because he won't be bullied by other kids at this school.

I actually have received an apology from the school board, so I guess I shouldn't worry about it anyway. He's no longer a student at this school. I'm an engineer and if I were to just ignore a procedure (giving the parent the paperwork and paddling anyway) and ignore phone calls, I would lose my job. This is not 1953.

Paddling has NO place in schools, you can paddle your kids in your home all you like (but THAT is illegal, anything other than your hand, so watch out) and administrators should not be able to have a different set of rules. Enough said.

I don't think she was saying anything about the way YOU choose to raise your child, I think her comments were about today's children in general. As far as you not knowing there was a letter you could sign against corporal punishment, you should have done your homework better. I am fourty-five and they were sending those letters home in the late seventies.

VOLSMAN, you are correct, I wasn't saying her child is a bad child, I am just saying that some kids no adays sure could use a good smack on the ass every now and then :)
