This column is fantastic - it describes perfectly what made Mayor Barrett such a valuable asset for North Adams.

....The city would have died without Barrett..." COME ON! What is this man,'GOD'?! Give me a break! Some of you sound like this is the Old West and this guy was just walkingalong and he came upon this ghost town and worked a miracle! Someone would have been Mayor! And something would have happened! I honestly don't think some of you people realize how ridiculous you sound when you praise this man the way you do. You'd think he'd saved your lives in Viet Nam or something! He ran a freakin' city! And 'RAN IT INTO THE GROUND',at that! And 'TOOK ADVANTAGE TO BENEFIT FROM IT EVERY CHANCE HE GOT'!...It would've died...Yeah. Okay.
