Screen wars: Pittsfield or mall?

Full story: Berkshire Eagle

When the 10-screen Pittsfield Cinema Center on West Housatonic Street closed abruptly eight years ago, it left the Regal Cinemas in the Berkshire Mall in Lanesborough as the only theater complex available to moviegoers who live in Central Berkshire.

The only problem that I foresee is this perception that downtown Pittsfield isn't safe at night.

For the square/museum/Colonial area, I think that's erroneous. Hopefully, we'll give them a chance.

With North Adams closed, my wife and I went to Regal at the mall today. We have a bunch of gift tickets from our kids, and were stunned at the $15 price for a Medium popcorn with soda.

The stadium seating and twin 3D theaters, and the Beacon's for us all the way.

I patronize some of the restaurants in the vicinity and while I don't find the area substantially "unsafe", we HAVE been accosted by various weirdos.

Since I carry a pistol (legal) for if you're far enough away, and a knife for up close, I'm not too worried. I could kill them if they were really a bother. But I can see how they would scare off some of the suburbanites.

Gee, at this rate the Beacon Cinema's $22.5 million construction tab will be paid off in the year 2109.
Maybe the Obama Administration will give it a 'Stimulus' in order to keep it going for at least the first year.
Better yet, maybe Beacon can re-organize and become a not-for-profit so it won't have to pay any real-estate taxes.

Sounds like opening a business that will "keep grandkids occupied" would be a winner if you had space near the Beacon theater. That is, someplace a grandparent would feel safe having the grandchildren there.

With taxi fair and four kids, buttered popcorn (wipe grease on seats), figure it will cost about 70 dollars. Or I can get Netflix and Orvilles (wipe grease with toilet tissue) and cost, about 7 dollars.

North St is not a problem at night. Some of you morons ever get out of your town or Berkshire County? If you can't handle what you might meet on North St, you better stay home!
As for Beacon Cinema, it better have some uniqueness in features and what it shows; but not overprice itself, otherwise I give it a year.

North Adams downtown cinemas closed? Seriously? The cinema by Burger King? Why?

I PRAY the Beacon doesn't show anything with a number after the title, anything with a Happy Meal tie-in or anything involving a thug-rapper/wanna-be actor...save that award-winning garbage for the mall rats. Based on their upcoming schedule on their website, this will be an awesome thing for Pittsfield.

Every "major" city in this county (using the term "major" very loosely) has movie theater downtown (Williamstown, Gt. Barrington, North Adams) and yet in Pittsfield up until this month you couldn't even see a movie within the city limits.

I am grateful for this place.

Bob, think of it this way, price it higher to keep out the mall rat scum........that is what I would do, seriously. And you're right, if you can't handle North Street then by all means DON'T go to Albany, Springfield or even Hartford....scary scary!

I can't believe people are complaining that the area is unsafe...have any of you been out of Berkshire County?

North Street in Pittsfield is a haven compared to some places I've been....I am down there once in a while at night and never feel threatened by anyone or anything.

I think this theater is going to be GREAT for Pittsfield, and will help along the revitalization effort that seemingly has stalled a bit.

I will be checking it out when I'm back in Pittsfield at some point!

Mall has plenty of parking with much handicapped parking right in front. Pittsfield has no parking with very little, if any, handicapped parking close by. Point to the mall. Mall has stores like American Eagle and Sears, not to mention Target, within walking distance open till 9 o0r 10 PM. Pittsfield has none of the above. Point mall. Mall has the food court for fast, convienient food and Bennigans for sit down before a movie. Pittsfield has many good restaurants, including the Highland and places in the Crowne Plaza, for a sit down meal. If you want quick, point mall. If you want quality, point Pittsfield.Pittsfield has bums and hookers soliciting money, and I can only imagine it will get worse when this place opens. The mall has a few pink kids to bother those who take that kind of thing. Point mall.Pittsfield has road construction and barrels all over the roads for people to negotiate, for now, to get to the movies. The mall has a bad road on on side and good one on the other, but no barrels. For now, point mall. Seems the mall has th edge, and since I'm in a wheelchair I wouldn't think of going to North St. for a movie right now,and I also have Netflix, so I just stay home and watch whenI want to. Many people ar in the same boat with Netflix, but if I wanted to see a new release quickly I'd go to the mall for sure. Overall, the mall wins.

Daily Horoscope for December 20

Pisces

If you-know-who has been getting on your nerves recently, matters will soon come to a head and force you to take drastic action. As Mars turns tail in your sixth house, you might finally lose your rag with someone at work who's been testing your patience to the limit. Stand your ground if you feel you're being messed about in some way. Clear the air if needs be, but don't create a really nasty atmosphere by throwing an eye-popping tantrum. Take care of any infections.
